  • Nowadays, evaluation of amounts and distributions of radioactive waste is an important preparatory step in the process of nuclear reactor decommissioning. For tentative estimation of radioactive waste, a cell-based rigorous 2 step (R2S) method usually is used; however, a poor resolution caused by the averaged flux and spectrum in a cell is still a great challenge because of leading to underestimated or overestimated results. To overcome the poor resolution, several systems were introduced. Neither system, however, provides any function for evaluation of radioactive waste amount and distribution. Thus, it is additionally required to classify radioactive waste based on the results of activation calculation. In this study, the advanced R2S (AR2S) system was developed. To verify the performance of the system, its results for a verification problem were compared with those of the cell-based R2S method. The results showed good agreement, which is to say, within 2.0% relative error. Also, several characteristics of fine/coarse mesh were analyzed. To demonstrate the performance of the AR2S system, the radioactive waste from the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor (JPDR) was estimated, and the result indicated a high-resolution distribution. Therefore, it is expected that the AR2S system will prove useful for precise evaluation of radioactive waste.

  • Most of the existing seismic codes for RC buildings consider only a scenario earthquake for analysis, often characterized by the response spectrum at the specified location. However, any real earthquake event often involves occurrences of multiple earthquakes within a few hours or days, possessing similar or even higher energy than the first earthquake. This critically impairs the rehabilitation measures thereby resulting in the accumulation of structural damages for subsequent earthquakes after the first earthquake. Also, the existing seismic provisions account for the non-linear response of an RC building frame implicitly by specifying a constant response modification factor (R) in a linear elastic design. However, the 'R' specified does not address the changes in structural configurations of RC moment-resisting frames (RC MRFs) viz., building height, number of bays present, bay width, irregularities arising out of mass and stiffness changes, etc. resulting in changed dynamic characteristics of the structural system. Hence, there is an imperative need to assess the seismic performance under sequential earthquake ground motions, considering the adequacy of code-specified 'R' in the representation of dynamic characteristics of RC buildings. Therefore, the present research is focused on the evaluation of the non-linear response of medium-rise 3D RC MRFs with and without vertical irregularities under bi-directional sequential earthquake ground motions using non-linear dynamic analysis. It is evident from the results that collapse probability increases, and 'R' reduces significantly for various RC MRFs subjected to sequential earthquakes, pronouncing the vulnerability and inadequacy of estimation of design base shear by code-specified 'R' under sequential earthquakes.

  • The spent nuclear fuel is burned during the planned cycle in the plant and then generates elements such as actinide series, fission products, and plutonium with a long half-life. An 'interim storage' step is needed to manage the high radioactivity and heat emitted by nuclides until permanent-disposal. In the case of Korea, there is no space to dispose of high-level radioactive waste after use, so there is a need for a period of time using interim storage. Therefore, the intensity of neutrons and gamma-ray must be determined to ensure the integrity of spent nuclear fuel during interim storage. In particular, the most important thing in spent nuclear fuel is burnup evaluation, estimation of the source term of neutrons and gamma-ray is regarded as a reference measurement of the burnup evaluation. In this study, an analysis of spent nuclear fuel was conducted by setting up a virtual fuel burnup case based on CE16×16 fuel to check the total amount and spectrum of neutron, gamma radiation produced. The correlation between BU (burnup), IE (enrichment), and CT (cooling time) will be identified through spent nuclear fuel burnup calculation. In addition, the composition of nuclide inventory, actinide and fission products can be identified.

  • There exist various types of the WEC (Wave Energy Converter), and among them, the point absorber is the most popularly investigated type. However, it is difficult to find examples of systematically measured data analysis for the design of the point absorber type of power buoy in the world. The study investigates the wave load acting on the point absorber type resonance power buoy wave energy extraction system proposed by Kweon et al. (2010). This study analyzes the time series spectra with respect to the three-year wave data (2002.05.01~2005.03.29) measured using the pressure type wave gage at the seaside of north breakwater of Hupo harbor located in the east coast of the Korean peninsula. From the analysis results, it could be deduced that monthly wave period and wave height variations were apparent and that monthly wave powers were unevenly distributed annually. The average wave steepness of the usual wave was 0.01, lower than that of the wind wave range of 0.02-0.04. The mode of the average wave period has the value of 5.31 sec, while mode of the wave height of the applicable period has the value of 0.29 m. The occurrence probability of the peak period is a bi-modal type, with a mode value between 4.47 sec and 6.78 sec. The design wave period can be selected from the above four values of 0.01, 5.31, 4.47, 6.78. About 95% of measured wave heights are below 1 m. Through this study, it was found that a resonance power buoy system is necessary in coastal areas with low wave energy and that the optimal design for overcoming the uneven monthly distribution of wave power is a major task in the development of a WEF (Wave Energy Farm). Finding it impossible to express the average spectrum of the usual wave in terms of the standard spectrum equation, this study proposes a new spectrum equation with three parameters, with which basic data for the prediction of the power production using wave power buoy and the fatigue analysis of the system can be given.

  • Amylose and protein contents are important traits determining the edible quality of rice, especially in East Asian countries. Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) has become a powerful tool for rapid and nondestructive quantification of natural compounds in agricultural products. To test the practically of using NIRS for estimation of brown rice amylose and protein contents, the spectral reflectances ($400{\sim}2500\;nm$) of total 9,483 accessions of rice germplasm in Rural development Administration (RDA) Genebank ere obtained and compared to chemically determined amylose and protein content. The protein content of tested 119 accessions ranged from 6.5 to 8.0% and 25 accessions exhibited protein contents between 8.5 to 9.5%. In case of amylose content, all tested accessions ranged from 18.1 to 21.7% and the grade from 18.1 to 19.9% includes most number of accessions as 152 and 4 accessions exhibited amylose content between 20.5 to 21.7%. The optimal performance calibration model could be obtained from original spectra of brown rice using MPLS (Modified Partial Least Squares) with the correlation coefficients ($r_2$) for amylose and protein content were 0.865 and 0.786, respectively. The standard errors of calibration (SEC) exhibited good statistic values: 2.078 and 0.442 for amylose and protein contents, respectively. All these results suggest that NIR spectroscopy may serve as reputable and rapid method for quantification of brown rice protein and amylose contents in large numbers of rice germplasm.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate shear wave velocity of rockfill materials by making practical use of the micro-earthquake records which are ordinarily obtained at a domestic rockfill dam and to verify its applicability. Micro-earthquake records were obtained at the site of Heongseong dam and Soyanggang dam, which are the existing multi-purpose dams in Korea. In the previous study, the fundamental periods of each dam were already evaluated by analyzing the response spectrum of the observed records. In this study, numerical analyses varying shear moduli of rockfill zone were carried out using the acceleration histories measured at the abutment as input ground motions. From comparison between the fundamental periods calculated by numerical analyses and measured records, the shear wave velocities with depth were estimated. It is found that the effect of different earthquake events on shear wave velocity estimation for the target dam materials is negligible and the shear wave velocity can be consistently evaluated. Furthermore, comparing the shear wave velocity with the previous researchers' empirical relationships and field test results, applicability of suggested method is verified. Therefore, in case that it is impossible to conduct field tests and estimation is preliminary, the suggested method can be practically used.

  • In this thesis, we develop a spectral analysis scheme to eliminate the spurious peaks generated in HRR Millimeterwave Seeker based on FMICW system. In contrast to FMCW system, FMICW system generates spurious peaks in the spectrum of its IF signal, caused by the periodic discontinuity of the signal. These peaks make the accuracy of the system depend on the previously estimated range if a band pass filter is utilized to eliminate them and noise floor go to high level if random interrupted sequence is utilized and in case of using staggering process, we must transmit several waveforms to obtain overlapped information. Using the spectral analysis one of the schemes such as IAA(Iterative Adaptive Approach) and SPICE(SemiParametric Iterative Covariance-based Estimation method) which were introduced recently, the spurious peaks can be eliminated effectively. In order to utilize IAA and SPICE, since we must distinguish between reliable data and unreliable data and only use reliable data, STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) is applied to the distinguishment process.

  • A spatio-temporal join is an expensive operation that is commonly used in spatio-temporal database systems. In order to generate an efficient query plan for the queries involving spatio-temporal join operations, it is crucial to estimate accurate selectivity for the join operations. Given two dataset $S_1,\;S_2$ of discrete data and a timestamp $t_q$, a spatio-temporal join retrieves all pairs of objects that are intersected each other at $t_q$. The selectivity of the join operation equals the number of retrieved pairs divided by the cardinality of the Cartesian product $S_1{\times}S_2$. In this paper, we propose aspatio-temporal histogram to estimate selectivity of spatio-temporal join by extending existing geometric histogram. By using a wide spectrum of both uniform dataset and skewed dataset, it is shown that our proposed method, called Spatio-Temporal Histogram, can accurately estimate the selectivity of spatio-temporal join. Our contributions can be summarized as follows: First, the selectivity estimation of spatio-temporal join for discrete data has been first attempted. Second, we propose an efficient maintenance method that reconstructs histograms using compression of spatial statistical information during the lifespan of discrete data.

  • This paper introduces multifractal processes and presents the empirical investigation of the multifractal asset pricing. The multifractal stock price process contains long-tails which focus on Levy-Stable distributions. The process also contains long-dependence, which is the characteristic feature of fractional Brownian motion. Multifractality introduces a new source of heterogeneity through time-varying local reqularity in the price path. This paper investigates multifractality in stock prices. After finding evidence of multifractal scaling, the multifractal spectrum is estimated via the Legendre transform. The distinguishing feature of the multifractal process is multiscaling of the return distribution's moments under time-resealing. More intensive study is required of estimation techniques and inference procedures.

  • The presence of noise in speech signals degrades the performance of recognition systems in which there are mismatches between the training and test environments. To make a speech recognizer robust, it is necessary to compensate these mismatches. In this paper, we studied about an improvement of stochastic feature extraction based on band-SNR for robust speech recognition. At first, we proposed a modified version of the multi-band spectral subtraction (MSS) method which adjusts the subtraction level of noise spectrum according to band-SNR. In the proposed method referred as M-MSS, a noise normalization factor was newly introduced to finely control the over-estimation factor depending on the band-SNR. Also, we modified the architecture of the stochastic feature extraction (SFE) method. We could get a better performance when the spectral subtraction was applied in the power spectrum domain than in the mel-scale domain. This method is denoted as M-SFE. Last, we applied the M-MSS method to the modified stochastic feature extraction structure, which is denoted as the MMSS-MSFE method. The proposed methods were evaluated on isolated word recognition under various noise environments. The average error rates of the M-MSS, M-SFE, and MMSS-MSFE methods over the ordinary spectral subtraction (SS) method were reduced by 18.6%, 15.1%, and 33.9%, respectively. From these results, we can conclude that the proposed methods provide good candidates for robust feature extraction in the noisy speech recognition.
