  • In the geochemical field, the chemical speciation of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) has been widely investigated by performing measurements to determine its luminescence properties, namely the excitation, emission, and lifetime. Of these properties, the excitation has been relatively overlooked in most time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) studies. In this study, TRLFS and continuous-wave excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy are adopted to characterize the excitation properties of U(VI) surface species that interact with amorphous silica. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) measured from a silica suspension and silica sediment showed very similar spectral shapes with similar lifetime values. In contrast, the excitation spectra of U(VI) measured from these samples were significantly different. The results show that distinctive excitation maxima appeared at approximately 220 and 280 nm for the silica suspension and silica sediment, respectively.

  • Plastics are classified into 7 types such as PET (PETE), HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and Other for separation and recycling. Recently, large corporations advocating ESG management are replacing them with bioplastics. Incineration and landfill of disposal of plastic waste are responsible for air pollution and destruction of the ecosystem. Because it is not easy to accurately classify plastic materials with the naked eye, automated system-based screening studies using various sensor technologies and AI-based software technologies have been conducted. In this paper, NIR scanning devices considering the NIR wavelength characteristics that appear differently for each plastic material and a system that can identify the type of plastic by learning the NIR spectrum data collected through it. The accuracy of plastic material identification was evaluated through a decision tree-based SVM model for multiclass classification on NIR spectral datasets for 8 types of plastic samples including biodegradable plastic.

  • In this study, we set a boundary value problem (BVP) consisting of a discrete Sturm-Liouville equation with transmission condition and boundary conditions depending on generalized eigenvalue parameter. Discussing the Jost and scattering solutions of this BVP, we present scattering function and find some properties of this function. Furthermore, we obtain resolvent operator, continuous and discrete spectrum of this problem and we give an valuable asymptotic equation to get the properties of eigenvalues. Finally, we give an example to compare our results with other studies.

  • The visible threshold of Oreochromis niloticus responded to high light intensity under short wavelengths, whereas the response to low light intensity under long wavelengths was low, with a minimum visual threshold of 574 nm of LED lights. Movement distance of O. niloticus was dropped at 31℃ and increased abnormally at 37℃ under natural light. Comparing movement distance under red (622 nm) and green (518 nm) lights of LED, movement distance and swimming speed under red and green lights were higher than under natural light. However, the movement distance decreased rapidly at 31℃ under red light and lowest at 33℃ under green light. After that, there was a tendency to adapt to high water temperatures gradually. Consequently, red and green lights may be recommended for O. niloticus's aquaculture because the red and green lights have a positive effect on growth performance, survival rate, and metabolism, as shown in previous studies. It is necessary to control the water temperature below 32℃ because abnormal behavior above 32℃ revealed under red and green LED lights and natural light.

  • We measured temporal and emission properties of quiescent magnetars using archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data, produced a list of the properties for 17 magnetars, and revisited previously suggested correlations between the properties. Our studies carried out with a larger sample, better spectral characterizations, and more thorough analyses not only confirmed previously-suggested correlations but also found new ones. The observed correlations differ from those seen in other neutron-star populations but generally accord with magnetar models. Specifically, the trends of the intriguing correlations of blackbody luminosity (LBB) with the spin-inferred dipole magnetic field strength (BS) and characteristic age (τc) were measured to be LBB ∝ B1.5S and LBB ∝ τ-0.6c, supporting the twisted magnetosphere and magnetothermal evolution models for magnetars. We report the analysis results and discuss our findings in the context of magnetar models.

  • In this study, numerical study of a long, straight, side-anchored floating bridge with discrete pontoons subjected to combined earthquakes and waves is conducted. Ground motions with magnitude corresponding to 200 YRP (years return period) earthquake in South Korea are generated based on the spectral matching method from a past earthquake record in California. Several sensitivity studies are carried out for bridge end condition, for different site classes (hard rock S1 and soft and deep soil S5), and for three different excitations (earthquake only, wave only, and earthquake-wave combined). Bridge and pontoon motions, bending moments along the bridge, and mooring tensions are systematically examined through coupled time-domain simulations by commercial program OrcaFlex. The numerical results show that the impact of earthquakes on floating bridges is still of importance especially for soft soil although ground motions are less directly applied to the structure than fixed bridges.

  • Knowledge for reflectance characteristic of interesting targets will provide us with actual application of remote sensing on agriculture. In this study, we have measured and analyzed reflectivity characteristics based on growing status from transplanting time to harvesting time. Rice paddies transplant into 3 fields at 20, May, 1999. Measurement of reflectivity characteristics were carried out with a portable spectroradiometer for frequencies from 300nm to 1100nm during the time period from 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM of clear sky and calm a day. The measurements for a day repeated 3 times(also, 3 times to each measurement)for reliable values. In result, we found that averaged reflectivity of visible range has about 2.34% - 2.55% in blue region(400nm-498nm), about 5.05% - 6.01% in green region(500nm-598nm) and about 4.21% - 5.24% in red region(600nm-698nm). It must be noted that the more rice canopy grows, the more spectral reflectivity decreases in visible region. Also, we separated infrared region into two cases - One case is increasing region with 700nm-780nm, the other is fixed region with 800nm-1100nm. Averaged reflectivity of these regions has about 22.3% - 23.0% in increasing region, about 29.4% - 33.1% in fixed region. It must be noted that more rice canopy grows, the more spectral reflectivity also increases up to 23, Aug. in infrared region. After 23, Aug, the reflectivity has a tendency toward decrease.

  • The object of this study is to detect of land-cover change in western DMZ and vicinity. This was performed as a basic study to construct a decision support system for the conservation or a sustainable development of the DMZ and Vicinity near future. DMZ is an is 4km wide and 250km long and it's one of the most highly fortified boundaries in the world and also a unique thin green line. Environmentalists want to declare the DMZ as a natural reserve and a biodiversity zone, but nowadays through the strengthening of the inter-Korean economic cooperation, some developers are trying to construct a new-town or an industrial complex inside of the DMZ. This study investigates the current environmental conditions, especially deforestation of the western DMZ adopting remote sensing and GIS techniques. The Land-covers were identified through the linear spectvral mixture analysis(LSMA) which was used to handle the spectral mixture problem of low spatial resolution imagery of Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery. To analyze quantitative and spatial change of vegetation-cover in western DMZ, GIS overlay method was used. In LSMA, to develop high-quality fraction images, three endmembers of green vegetation(GV), soil, water were driven from pure features in the imagery. Through 15 years, from 1987 to 2002, forest of western DMZ and vicinity was devastated and changed to urban, farmland or barren land. Northern part of western DMZ and vicinity was more deforested than that of southern part. ($52.37km^2$ of North Korean forest and $39.04km^2$ of South Korean were change to other land-covers.) In case of North Korean part, forest changed to barren land and farmland and in South Korean part, forest changed to farmland and urban area. Especially, In North Korean part of DMZ and vicinity, $56.15km^2$ of farmland changed to barren land through 15 years, which showed the failure of the 'Darakbat' (terrace filed) project which is one of food increase projects in North Korea.

  • Introduction: In this study, we compared sleep structure, EEG characteristic of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and normal controls which were matched in sex and age. Methods: Fifteen children (male:female=4:11) who complained snoring and were suspected to have sleep apnea and their age and sex matched normal controls (male:female=5:10) have been done nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG). Sleep parameters, sleep apnea variables and relative spectral components of EEG from NPSG have been compared between both groups. Results: Pediatric OSA group were distinguished from normal controls in terms of apnea index, respiratory disturbance index and nadir of oxyhemoglobulin desaturation. Pediatric OSA group showed increased percent of sleep stage 1, decreased rapid eye movement sleep percent and increased delta power in O1 EEG channel. However other sleep parameters and spectral powers were not different between two groups. Conclusion: In pediatric OSA group, sleep structure parameter disruption may be not prominent as the previous studies for adult OSA group because of including mild OSA data in diagnostic criteria. In addition, EEG changes might not be distinct due to low arousal index compared to adult OSA patients. We can observe general characteristics and particularity of pediatric OSA through this study.

  • The construction of hyperspectral test-bed dataset is essential for the effective performance of hyperspectral image for various applications. In this study, we analyzed the technical points for generating of optimal hyperspectral test-bed site for hyperspectral sensors and the efficiency of hyperspectral test-bed site. In this regard regions we analyzed existing construction techniques for generating test-bed site in domestic and foreign, and designed the test-bed site to acquire images from the airborne hyperspectral sensor. To produce a reference data from the image of constructed test-bed site, this study applied vicarious correction as a pre-processing and analyzed its efficiency. The result presented that it was ideal to use tarp for the vicarious correction, but it is possible to use the materials with constant spectral reflectance or with relatively low variance of spectral reflectance. The test-bed data taken in this study can be employed as the reference of domestic and foreign studies for hyperspectral image processing.
