  • The HCP(Hypocycloidal Pinch) device for plasma focus was modified for a pumping source of the dye laser, and the spectral distribution and time behavior of its light pulses were investigated by using a UV spectrometer, 70 MHz CRO and Si-PIN photodiode detector. An array of multiple stages of HCP and narrower electrode gaps were chosen in order to make a more uniform discharge along the HCP axis. The possible spectral range for the pumping of dye laser is 360-620nm, when the HCP is operated at 5-8kv of apllied voltage and 50-150Torr of Ar fill gas pressure. The rise-time and FWHM of light pulses from the HCP are 5us and 30-50us respectively when it is operated under the same conditions as above.

  • When a small absorbing particle is exposed to a strong thermal radiation incidence, it moves towards or away from the radiation source due to the nonuniform internal absorption of the radiation. It is called the photophoretic phenomena and governed by the asymmetry factor. An asymmetry factor for the total wavelength range is calculated to estimate the photophoretic phenomena of a particle in a combustor or in the atmosphere and compared to that for a single wavelength. The samples are soot particulates, water droplets, ice particles, silicon particles, $SiO_2$ particles, aluminium oxide particles, whose spectral complex refractive index are available. Although differences between total and monochromatic asymmertry factors are not much for relatively uniform distribution of the spectral refractive index, they are great in general. Therefore the use of the monochromatic factor will considerably deteriorate the accuracy of the calculation of the photophoresis.

  • In this paper, a MSS-NOVO method that combines the HMM composition method with a noise reduction method is proposed for speech recognition in noisy environments. This combined method starts with noise reduction with modified spectral subtraction (MSS) to enhance the input noisy speech, then the noise and voice composition (NOVO) method is applied for making noise adapted models by using the noise in the non-utterance regions of the enhanced noisy speech. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we compare MSS-NOVO method with other methods, i.e., SS-NOVO, MWF-NOVO. To set up the noisy speech for test, we add White noise to KLE 452 database with different SNRs range from 0dB to 15dB, at 5dB intervals. From the tests, MSS-NOVO method shows average improvement of 66.5% and 13.6% compared with the existing SS-NOVO method and MWF-NOVO method, respectively. Especially our proposed MSS-NOVO method shows a big improvement at low SNRs.

  • The ruthenium(II) ferrocenyl heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone complexes of the type $[RuCl(CO)(EPh_3)]_2L$ (where E = P/As; L = binucleating monobasic tridendate thiosemicarbazone ligand) have been investigated. Strutural features were determined by analytical and spectral techniques. Binding of these complexes with CT-DNA by absorption spectral study indicates that the ruthenium(II) complexes form adducts with DNA and has intrinsic binding constant in the range of $3.3{\times}10^4-1.2{\times}10^5M^{-1}$. The complexes exhibit a remarkable DNA cleavage activity with CT-DNA in the presence of hydrogen oxide and the cleavage activity depends on dosage.

  • Spectra of reflected sunlight from Mars and Jupiter are presented. They were obtained from an educational 1-D array spectrograph covering almost a full range of visible wavelengths, 200~900 nm with 1 nm spectral resolution. The question was whether a spectral difference could be obtained between that of terrestrial planets and gas planets with an educational spectrograph. It was installed in a 12-inch reflecting telescope at the Korea Science Academy of KAIST in Busan. Both spectra show clear absorption lines of reflected sunlight. They shows differences oin line presence, but are not very significant. This work means that the spectrograph successfully observed the reflected spectra of planets and can detect differences in spectra in terms of the absence and presence of absorption lines of planets.

  • Ultra-wideband (UWB) radios have attracted great interest for their potential application in short-range high-data-rate wireless communications. High received signal to noise ratio and compliance with the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) spectral mask call for judicious design of UWB pulse shapers. In this paper, even and odd order derivatives of Gaussian pulse are used respectively as base waveforms to produce two synthesized pulses. Our method can realize high efficiency of spectral utilization in terms of normalized effective signal power (NESP). The waveform design problem can be converted into linear programming problem, which can be efficiently solved. The waveform based on even order derivatives is orthogonal to the one based on odd order derivatives.

  • Despite the site classification method was improved in the previous study, the response spectrum would be required to be modified by adjusting the integration interval to calculate the site coefficients because the response spectra did not match well the average spectral accelerations obtained by site response analyses in the range of long periods. In this paper, new response spectra for each site categories were determined by adjusting the integration interval of long-period site coefficient $F_{v}$ from $0.4{\sim}2.0$ to $0.4{\sim}1.5$ second. It matched well the average spectral accelerations and new response spectrum, and it was also improved compared to the current site classification system.

  • Over the past 30 years, significant developments have been made in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technologies that can provide end users with rich spectral, spatial, and temporal information. Owing to the advances in miniaturization, cost reduction, real-time processing, and analytical methods, HSI technologies have a wide range of applications from remote-sensing to healthcare, military, and the environment. In this study, we focus on the latest trends of HSI technologies, analytical methods, and their applications. In particular, improved machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, allows the full use of HSI technologies in classification, clustering, and spectral mixture algorithms. Finally, we describe the status of HSI technology development for skin diagnostics.

  • As the residual displacement and/or drift demands are commonly used for seismic assessment of buildings, the estimation of these values play a very critical role through earthquake design philosophy. The residual displacement estimation of fixed base structures has been the topic of numerous researches up to now, but the effect of soil flexibility is almost always omitted. In this study, residual displacement demands are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s for near-field and far-field ground motions for both fixed and interacting cases. The elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. Based on time history analyses, a new simple yet effective equation is proposed for residual displacement demand of any system whether fixed base or interacting as a function of structural period, lateral strength ratio and spectral displacement.

  • Purpose: A narrowband hyperspectral imaging sensor of high-dimensional spectral bands is advantageous for identifying the reflectance by selecting the significant spectral bands for predicting crop yield over the broadband multispectral imaging sensor for each wavelength range of the crop canopy. The images acquired by each imaging sensor were used to develop the models for predicting the Chinese cabbage yield. Methods: The models for predicting the Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) yield, with multispectral images based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), were developed by simple linear regression (SLR) using vegetation indices, and forward stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) using four spectral bands. The model with hyperspectral images based on the ground were developed using forward stepwise MLR from the significant spectral bands selected by dimension reduction methods based on a partial least squares regression (PLSR) model of high precision and accuracy. Results: The SLR model by the multispectral image cannot predict the yield well because of its low sensitivity in high fresh weight. Despite improved sensitivity in high fresh weight of the MLR model, its precision and accuracy was unsuitable for predicting the yield as its $R^2$ is 0.697, root-mean-square error (RMSE) is 1170 g/plant, relative error (RE) is 67.1%. When selecting the significant spectral bands for predicting the yield using hyperspectral images, the MLR model using four spectral bands show high precision and accuracy, with 0.891 for $R^2$, 616 g/plant for the RMSE, and 35.3% for the RE. Conclusions: Little difference was observed in the precision and accuracy of the PLSR model of 0.896 for $R^2$, 576.7 g/plant for the RMSE, and 33.1% for the RE, compared with the MLR model. If the multispectral imaging sensor composed of the significant spectral bands is produced, the crop yield of a wide area can be predicted using a UAV.
