  • In the nonlinear dynamic structural analysis, the given ground excitation as an input should be well defined. Because of the lack of recorded accelerograms in Korea, it is required to generate an artificial earthquake by a stochastic model of ground excitation with various dynamic properties rather than recorded accelerograms. It is well own that earthquake motions are generally non-stationary with time-varying intensity and frequency content. Many researchers have proposed non-stationary random process models. Yeh and Wen (1990) proposed a non-stationary stochastic process model which can be modeled as components with an intensity function, a frequency modulation function and a power spectral density function to describe such non-stationary characteristics. This model is based on the simulation for the strong-motion earthquakes with magnitude greater than approximately 5.0~6.0, because it will be not only expected to cause structural damage but also involved the characteristics of earthquake motions. Also, the recorded earthquake motion within this range are still very scarce in Korea. Thus, it is necessary to verify the model by the application of it to the mid-magnitude (approximately 4.0~6.0) earthquakes actually recorded in domestic or foreign area. The purpose of the paper is to generate an artificial earthquake using the model of Yeh and Wen in the area with low seismicity.

  • In this paper, photoconductive pure CdSe films and CdSe films doped with various impurities are fabricated by vaccum deposition and subsequent heat treatment in vaccum. The substrate is kept at $200^{\circ}C$ during deposition and temperature generally makes the films more photoconductive. The photocurrent of the films increase linearly with light illumination. Spectral response of photoconductivity is measured at the wave length range of 380nm to 850nm. The maximum response is found at 700nm in pure CdSe films, but it shifts to the longer wavelength in impurity-doped CdSe films. Photo-response of the pure CdSe films are more sensitive at lower temperature, while the impurity-doped films show the opposite trend.

  • We investigated visible light radiated from Plasma Focus device by time-integrated analyzed method. Plasma focus is a device that translated from electric energy into visible light by electric discharge. Spectral analysis is using Monochromator(focal length = 0.5 m). Time-integrated spectrum is analyzed with densitometer the film which developed a constant range of wavelength. The condition of visible emission was that the discharging voltage was 13 kV and the working gas were Argon and Helium.

  • We report the photometric properties in BVR bands for the resolved bright supergiant stars in the dwarf galaxy Holmberg II. The color-magnitude diagrams and color-color diagram of 374 resolved stars indicate that the majority of the member stars are supergiant stars with a wide range of spectral type between B-K. A comparison with theoretical evolutionary tracks indicates that the supergiant stars in the observed field have progenitor masses between ${\sim}10M_{\bigodot}\;and\;20M_{\bigodot}$. The exponent of luminosity function in V is in good agreement with those of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds.

  • A new strain, SD12, was isolated from tannery waste polluted soil and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the basis of phenotypic traits and by comparison of 16S rRNA sequences. This bacterium exhibited broad-spectrum antagonistic activity against phytopathogenic fungi. The strain produced phosphatases, cellulases, proteases, pectinases, and HCN and also retained its ability to produce hydroxamate-type siderophore. A bioactive metabolite was isolated from P. aeruginosa SD12 and was characterized as 1-hydroxyphenazine ((1-OH-PHZ) by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analysis. The strain was used as a biocontrol agent against root rot and wilt disease of pyrethrum caused by Rhizoctonia solani. The stain is also reported to increase the growth and biomass of Plantago ovata. The purified compound, 1-hydroxyphenazine, also showed broad-spectrum antagonistic activity towards a range of phytopathogenic fungi, which is the first report of its kind.

  • We present a non-invasive technique to the measure temperature distribution in nano-sized porous thin films by means of the two-color laser-induced fluorescence (2-LIF) of rhodamine B. The fluorescence induced by the green line of a mercury lamp with the makeup of optical filters was measured on two separate color bands. They can be selected for their strong difference in the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescence quantum yield. This technique allows for absolute temperature measurements by determining the relative intensities on two adequate spectral bands of the same dye. To measure temperature fields, Silica (SiO2) nanoporous structure with 1-um thickness was constructed on a cover glass, and fluorescent dye was absorbed into these porous thin films. The calibration curves of the fluorescence intensity versus temperature were measured in a temperature range of $10-60^{\circ}C$, and visualization and measurement of the temperature field were performed by taking the intensity distributions from the specimen for the temperature field.

  • In this paper, seismic performance assessment has been examined for a mid-rise RC building subjected to 2016 Gyeongju earthquake occurred in Korea. For the purpose of the paper, 2D external and internal frames in each direction of the building have been employed in the present comparative analyses. Nonlinear static pushover analyses have been conducted to estimate frame capacities. Nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses have also been carried out to examine demands for the frames subjected to ground motions recorded at stations in near of Gyeongju and a previous earthquake ground motion. Analytical predictions demonstrate that maximum demands are significantly affected by characteristics of both spectral acceleration response and spectrum intensity over a wide range of periods. Further damage potential of the frames has been evaluated in terms of fragility analyses using the same ground motions. Fragility results reveal that the ground motion characteristics of the Gyeongju earthquake have little influence on the seismic demand and fragility of frames.

  • Based on the alternating series expansion of error probability function due to phase noise in PSK systems, the performance evaluations for Tikhonov and Gaussian probability density functions were performed in this paper. The range of the signal-to-noise ratio of recovered carrier signal which provides the same dependency between the error performances by Tikhonov function and Gaussian function was analyzed via loss evaluation due to phase noise. The phase noise with 1/f$^2$ characteristic was generated based on the relationship of the phase noise spectral density and the modulation index for frequency modulation signal. Using the generated phase noise as the input signal for digital satellite communication receiver, the performance losses due to the phase noise were measured and evaluated with the analyzed performance characteristics.

  • We analyze an optical system of a telescope based on Fresnel type objective lens as suggested by Hyde (1999). The Fresnel objective lens can be thin, light-weight and foldable, and therefore it is possible to develop a space telescope with an aperture larger than that of traditional telescopes. Moreover a lens, whatever it is either Fresnel type or conventional, allows much larger fabrication tolerances. We design a medium-sized telescope adopting Fresnel lens as an objective lens for use in space and possibly on the ground. The well-known chromatic aberration of the Fresnel primary lens is corrected by a field lens and another Fresnel lens using Schupmann method. An additional lens is used for forming images. We analyze the chromatic and off-axis aberrations of the proposed system analytically and suggest methods for the minimization of off-axis aberrations and for the operation in wider spectral range. We also conduct ray tracing and optimize the whole optical system with commercial software. Finally we present the design parameters of a telescope with an aperture of 0.5 to 1 meters, enabling diffraction limited operation for a moderate field of view about 10 arc-minutes.

  • Many signals in the nature have power-law behaviors, namely they are "scale-free". The method of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), as one of the popular methods (e.g., Rescaled range analysis and Spectral analysis) for determining scale-free nature of time series, has a very important advantage that the DFA can be applied to both stationary and non-stationary signals. The analysis of time series using the DFA has been broadly used in physiology, finance, hydrology, meteorology, geology, and so on. We performed the DFA of 16 Spaceweather HMI Active Region Patch (SHARP) parameters for 38 HMI Active Region Patches (HARPs) obtained by Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to June 2014. The main results from this study are as follows. (1) The most of the time series data are non-stationary. (2) The DFA scaling exponents of "mean vertical current density" for 38 HARPs have a negative correlation coefficient (-0.41) with flare index. (3) The DFA scaling exponents of parameters such as "Sum of the absolute value of net currents per polarity", "Absolute value of the net current helicity", and "Mean photospheric excess magnetic energy density" for the most active HARPs having more than 10 major flares, have positive correlation coefficients (0.64, 0.59, and 0.53, respectively) with the ratio of "the number of CMEs associated with major flares" to "the number of major flares". Physical interpretations on our results will be discussed.
