Multihop relay-based cellular networks are attracting much interest because of their throughput enhancement, coverage extension, and low infrastructure cost. In these networks, relay stations (RSs) between a base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs) drastically increase the overall spectral efficiency, with improved channel quality for MSs located at the cell edge or in shadow areas, and enhanced throughput of MSs in hot spots. These relay-based networks require an advanced radio resource management scheme because the optimal amount of radio resource for a BS-to-RS link should be allocated according to the MS channel quality and distribution, considering the interference among RSs and neighbor BSs. In this paper, we propose optimal resource planning algorithms that maximize the overall utility of relay-based networks under a proportional fair scheduling policy. In the first phase, we determine an optimal scheduling policy for distributing BS-to-RS link resources to RSs. In the second phase, we determine the optimal amount of the BS-to-RS link resources using the results of the first phase. The proposed algorithms efficiently calculate the optimal amount of resource without exhaustive searches, and their accuracy is verified by comparison with simulation results, in which the algorithms show a perfect match with simulations.
The diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancers is the gastroenterologists' mission because of national cancer screening program in South Korea. The detection of early cancers is emphasized, because these were previously treated with surgical treatment can be currently cured with endoscopic treatment. Gastroenterologists who achieved at least on some level can make an exact diagnosis regardless of what type of endoscopy, but generally, there are some required conditions for an optimal diagnosis. First, clinically important lesions have to be detected easily. Second, the border and morphology of lesions have to be characterized easily. Third, lesions have to be diagnosed exactly. Precancers and early cancers are often subtle and can pose a challenge to gastroenterologists to visualize using standard white light endoscopy. The use of dye solutions aids the diagnosis of early gastrointestinal cancers, however, it is a quite cumbersome to use dye solutions all the time and the solution often bothers the exact observation by pooling into the depression or ulceration of the lesion. To overcome this weakness, newer endoscopes are now developed so called "image enhanced endoscopy" using optical and/or electronic methods such as narrow band imaging (NBI), autofluorescence imaging (AFI), i-scan, flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) and confocal endomicroscopy (CLE).

High-order harmonic generation from a solid surface affected by the contrast of a laser pulse was studied using an oscillating mirror model. High-order harmonics generated from solid surfaces have unusual properties such as spectral redshift, and an intensity difference between even- and odd-order harmonics which is not reported for high-order harmonics generated by a gas medium. We confirmed that high-order harmonics from solid surfaces have selectivity of polarization as well as cut-off extension and the enhancement of conversion efficiency proportional to laser intensity. And the principle of operation and the characteristics of a plasma mirror system developed for achieving high contrast laser pulses to pursue the experimental realization of high-harmonic generation from solid surfaces are reported. Energy fluence on the plasma mirrors is tunable between $10\;J/cm^2$ and $1000\;J/cm^2$ and around 1000 shots are available before the plasma mirrors require replacement.
We synthesized $Er^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$, $Pr^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$, and $Er^{3+}-Pr^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$ -doped oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing $CaF_2$ nanocrystals by proper thermal treatments. Spectral characteristics of down- and up-converted emissions in three kinds of glass ceramics under 365-nm and 980-nm excitations were compared and explained by cross relaxations, excited-state absorptions, and energy-transfer processes between different ions. The huge reduction of up-conversion emission in the triply doped glass ceramics under 980-nm excitation compared to the $Er^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$ codoped one was explained by the split pump power and the direct energy transfer from $Er^{3+}$ to $Pr^{3+}$ ions. Increasing $Yb^{3+}$ concentration from 2% to 10% in the triply doped glass ceramics showed more than quadratic enhancement of the absorbed power, and we explained it by the enhanced energy-transfer efficiency from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$ ions. We also observed enhanced up-converted emissions of $Er^{3+}$ and $Pr^{3+}$ ions in three kinds of glass ceramics under simultaneous excitation at 980 nm and 1550 nm, and suggested detailed up-conversion mechanisms.

In this paper, core-shell semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) CdSeS/ZnS with emission at 490 nm and 450 nm were investigated for their use in luminescent down-shifting (LDS) layers. Luminescent quantum yield (LQY) of the QDs measurements in solution proposed that they were suitable candidates for inclusion in LDS layers. QDs were encapsulated in poly(methyl, methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer matrix and films were fabricated of $134{\pm}0.05$ microns. Selections of organic dyes from BASF Lumogen F range were also investigated for their use as LDS layers; Violet 570 and Yellow 083. The addition of LDS layers containing Violet 570 dye demonstrated a unity LQY when encapsulated within a PMMA matrix. A PV device of an LDS layer of Lumogen Violet 570 deposited on top of a crystalline silicon cell was fabricated where it was demonstrated to increase the efficiency of the cell by 34.5% relative.

In general, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is diagnosed clinically based on typical symptoms and/or response to proton pump inhibitor treatment. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is reserved for patients presenting with alarm symptoms, such as dysphagia, odynophagia, significant weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, or anorexia; those who meet the criteria for Barrett's esophagus screening; those who report a lack or partial response to proton pump inhibitor treatment; and those with prior endoscopic or surgical anti-reflux interventions. Newer endoscopic techniques are primarily used to increase diagnostic yield and provide an alternative to medical or surgical treatment for GERD. The available endoscopic modalities for the diagnosis of GERD include conventional endoscopy with white-light imaging, high-resolution and high-magnification endoscopy, chromoendoscopy, image-enhanced endoscopy (narrow-band imaging, I- SCAN, flexible spectral imaging color enhancement, blue laser imaging, and linked color imaging), and confocal laser endomicroscopy. Endoscopic techniques for treating GERD include esophageal radiofrequency energy delivery/Stretta procedure, transoral incisionless fundoplication, and endoscopic full-thickness plication. Other novel techniques include anti-reflux mucosectomy, peroral endoscopic cardiac constriction, endoscopic submucosal dissection, and endoscopic band ligation. Currently, many of the new endoscopic techniques are not widely available, and their use is limited to centers of excellence.
