  • Because of the phenological variation of vegetation growth in temperate region, it is often difficult to accurately assess the surface conditions of agricultural croplands, grasslands, and disturbed forests by multi-spectral remote sensor data. In particular, the spectral similarity between soil and dry vegetation has been a primary problem to correctly appraise the surface conditions during the non-growing seasons in temperature region. This study analyzes the spectral characteristics of the mixture of dry vegetation and soil. The reflectance spectra were obtained from laboratory spectroradiometer measurement (GER-2600) and from EO-1 Hyperion image data. The reflectance spectra of several samples having different level of dry vegetation fractions show similar pattern from both lab measurement and hyperspectral image. Red-edge near 700nm and shortwave IR near 2,200nm are more sensitive to the fraction of dry vegetation. The use of hyperspectral data would allow us for better separation between bare soils and other surfaces covered by dry vegetation during the leaf-off season.

  • As the number of spectral bands of high spectral resolution data increases, the capability to detect more detailed classes should also increase, and the classification accuracy should increase as well. Often, it is impossible to access enough training pixels for supervise classification. For this reason, the performance of traditional classification methods isn't useful. In this paper, we propose a new model for classification that operates based on decision fusion. In this classifier, learning is performed at two steps. In first step, only training samples are used and in second step, this classifier utilizes semilabeled samples in addition to original training samples. At the beginning of this method, spectral bands are categorized in several small groups. Information of each group is used as a new source and classified. Each of this primary classifier has special characteristics and discriminates the spectral space particularly. With using of the benefits of all primary classifiers, it is made sure that the results of the fused local decisions are accurate enough. In decision fusion center, some rules are used to determine the final class of pixels. This method is applied to real remote sensing data. Results show classification performance is improved, and this method may solve the limitation of training samples in the high dimensional data and the Hughes phenomenon may be mitigated.

  • Motivation of this study is based on these two aspects: geologic uses of ASTER and application scheme of Spectral Mixture Analysis. This study aims at geologic mapping for mineral exploration using ASTER and LANDSAT 7 ETM+ at Mongolian plateau region by SMA. After basic pre-processing such as the normalization, geometric corrections and calibration of reflectance, related to endmembers selection and spectral signature deviation, both methods using spectral library and using PPI(Pixel Purity Index) are performed and compared on a given task. Based on these schemes, SMA is performed using LANDSAT 7 ETM+ and ASTER image. As the results, fraction map showing geologic rock types are enough to meet purposes such as geologic mapping and mineral potential mapping in the case of both uses of these different types of remotely sensed images. It concluded that this approach based on SMA with LANDSAT and ASTER is regarded as one of effective schemes for geologic remote sensing.

  • Hyperspectral imagery have high spectral resolution and provide the potential for more accurate and detailed information extraction than any other type of remotely sensed data. In this paper, the "Linear Spectral Unmixing" model which is one solution to overcome the limit of spatial resolution for remote sensing data was introduced and we applied the algorithm to hyperspectral image. The result was not good because of some problems such as image calibration and used endmembers. Therefore, we analyzed the cause and had a search for a solution.

  • Detection and identification of targets from remotely sensed imagery are of great interest for civilian and military application. This paper presents an algorithm for target detection in high spatial resolution imagery based on the spectral and the dimensional characteristics of the reference target. In this algorithm, the spectral and the dimensional information of the reference target is extracted automatically from the sample image of the reference target. Then in the entire image, the candidate target pixels are extracted based on the spectral characteristics of the reference target. Finally, groups of candidate pixels which form isolated spatial objects of similar size to that of the reference target are extracted as detected targets. The experimental test results showed that even though the algorithm detected spatial objects which has different shape as targets if the spectral and the dimensional characteristics are similar to that of the reference target, it could detect 97.5% of the targets in the image. Using hyperspectral image and utilizing the shape information are expected to increase the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a geostatistical approach incorporated to the Bayesian data fusion technique for supervised classification of multi-sensor remote sensing data. Traditional spectral based classification cannot account for the spatial information and may result in unrealistic classification results. To obtain accurate spatial/contextual information, the indicator kriging that allows one to estimate the probability of occurrence of classes on the basis of surrounding observations is incorporated into the Bayesian framework. This approach has its merit incorporating both the spectral information and spatial information and improves the confidence level in the final data fusion task. To illustrate the proposed scheme, supervised classification of multi-sensor test remote sensing data set was carried out.

  • RAZAKSAT is a second micro-satellite mission by Malaysian Satellite Program and is expected for launch in June 2004. Designed to orbit the earth at low-equatorial orbit, RAZAKSAT will meet Malaysia’s immediate needs to rapid data acquisition (real time and more repetitions) to address many operational issues of remote sensing applications, which require availability of current data sets. RAZAKSAT will be among the first remote sensing satellite to orbit the earth at low inclination along the equator, 9$^{\circ}$ with 685km altitude, hence, allows optimal geographical information and environment change within equatorial region be observed with a unique revisit characteristics. The satellite primary payload is MAC, a push-broom type camera with 2.5m of ground sampling distance (GSD) in panchromatic band and 5m of GSD in four multi-spectral bands. This paper describes on the variation of illumination anticipated from simulated RAZAKSAT image, examine its implication to its ground leaving radiances for major applications.
