  • First light galaxies have predictable linear clustering, and are expected to produce fluctuations with a characteristic spatial power spectrum, which peaks at an angular scale of ~ 10 arcminutes and in the $1-2{\mu}m$ spectral regions. The Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment 2 (CIBER2) is a dedicated sounding rocket mission for measuring the fluctuations in the extragalactic infrared background light, following up the previous successful measurements of CIBER1. With a 28.5 cm telescope accompanied with three arms of camera barrels and a dual broadband filter on each H2RG (${\lambda}_c=2.5{\mu}m$) array, CIBER2 can measure 6 bands of wide field ($1.1{\times}2.2$ degrees) up to 3 AB magnitudes deeper than CIBER1. This project is leaded by California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, collaborating internationally with Institute of Space and Astronautical Science in Japan, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Korea Basic Science Institute, and Seoul National University. The Korean team is in charge of 1) one H2RG scientific array, 2) ground station hardware and software, 3) telescope lenses, and 4) flight and test bed electronics fabrication. In this paper, we describe the detailed activities of the Korean participation as well as the current status of the CIBER2 project.

  • Hyperspectral imagery is used in the land cover classification with the principle component analysis and minimum noise fraction to reduce the data dimensionality and noise. Recently, studies on the supervised classification using various features having spectral information and spatial characteristic have been carried out. In this study, principle component bands and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) was utilized in the supervised classification for the land cover classification. To utilize additional information not included in the principle component bands by the hyperspectral imagery, we tried to increase the classification accuracy by using the NDVI. In addition, the extended attribute profiles(EAP) generated using the morphological filter was used as the input data. The random forest algorithm, which is one of the representative supervised classification, was used. The classification accuracy according to the application of various features based on EAP was compared. Two areas was selected in the experiments, and the quantitative evaluation was performed by using reference data. The classification accuracy of the proposed algorithm showed the highest classification accuracy of 85.72% and 91.14% compared with existing algorithms. Further research will need to develop a supervised classification algorithm and additional input datasets to improve the accuracy of land cover classification using hyperspectral imagery.

  • When a geometric size of moonpool and an inflow velocity are determined based on the similarity of Froude number, Reynolds number is depending on the scale ratio of moonpool geometry. It means that different characteristics of flow fluctuations in moonpool can be observed depending on the scale ratio of moonpool even though Froude number is the same. In the present study two dimensional numerical simulations were performed to investigate the influence of scale ratios on the flow characteristics inside the moonpool. The inflow velocity at several scale ratios was determined to keep Froude number constant. A periodic response was observed in a small size of moonpool while a large moonpool showed complicated fluctuations with various amplitudes and frequencies, which made it difficult to distinguish the statistical steady-state response from the temporal responses in the case of large moonpool. The similarity of Froude number gave rise to a spectral characteristic which was inversely proportional to the square root of scale ratios ($f_{0.5}{\approx}{\sqrt{2}}f_1{\approx}2f_{2.0}$) but a low frequent occurrence of strong vortex ($f_{2.0}=0.07$)which is observed inside the large moonpool was characterized depending on scale ratios.

  • For more reliable estimation of seismic source, attenuation properties and dynamic ground property, site amplification function should be considered. Among various estimation methods, this study used the Nakamura's method (1989) for estimating site amplification characteristics. This method was originally applied to the surface waves of background noise and therefore there are some limitations in applying to general wave energy. However, recently this method has been extended and applied to the S wave energy successfully. This study applied the method to S wave and Coda wave energy, which is equivalent to the backscattered S wave energy. We used more than 60 observed ground motions from 5 earthquakes which were occurred recently, with magnitude range from 3.6 to 5.1. Each station showed characteristic site amplification property in low-, high- and resonance frequencies. Some of the stations showed as high as 4 times of site amplification in the range of specific frequencies, which may imply abnormal small scale geologic strata below the station or development of various trapped modes in the basin structure. Moreover, removal of site amplification can give us more reliable seismic source and attenuation parameters, addition to the seismic hazard estimation.

  • In this paper, a photodiode capable of obtaining a sufficient photo/ dark current ratio at both a forward bias state and a reverse bias state is proposed. The photodiode includes a glass substrate, an Cr thin film formed as a lower electrode over the glass substrate, Cr silicide thin film(∼l00$\AA$) ) formed as a schottky barrier over the Cr thin film, a hydrogenated amorphous silicon film formed as a photo conduction layer over a portion of the Cr silicide thin film. Transparent conduction film ITO (thickness 100nm) formed as an upper electrode over the hydro-generated amorphous silicon film is then deposited in pure argon at room temperature for the Schottky contact and light window. The high quality Cr silicide thin film using annealing of Cr and a-Si:H is formed and analyzed by experiment. We have obtained the film with a superior characteristics. The dark current of the ITO/a-Si:H Schottky at a reverse bias of -5V is ∼3$\times$IO-12 A/un2, and one of the lowest reported, hitherto. AES(Auger Electron Spectroscophy) measurements indicate that this notable improvement in device characteristics stems from reduced diffusion of oxygen, rather than indium, from the ITO into the a-Si:H layer, thus, preserving the integrity of the Schottky interface. The spectral response of the photodiode for wavelengths in the range from 400nm to 800nm shows the expected behavior whereby the photocurrent is governed by the absorption characteristics of a-Si:H.

  • Used small household appliances have a wide variety of product types and component materials, and contain high percentage of black plastics. However, they are not being recycled efficiently as conventional sensors such as near-infrared ray (NIR), etc. are not able to detect black plastic by types. In the present study, an automatic sorting system was developed based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to promote the recycling of waste plastics. The system we developed mainly consists of sample feeder, automatic position recognition system, LIBS device, separator and control unit. By applying laser pulse on the target sample, characteristic spectral data can be obtained and analyzed by using CCD detectors. The obtained data was then treated by using a classifier, which was developed based on artificial intelligent algorithm. The separation tests on waste plastics also were carried out by using a lab-scale automatic sorting system and the test results will be discussed. The classification rate of the radial basis neural network (RBFNNs) classifier developed in this study was about > 97%. The recognition rate of the black plastic by types with the automatic sorting system was more than 94.0% and the sorting efficiency was more than 80.0%. Automatic sorting system based on LIBS technology is in its infant stage and it has a high potential for utilization in and outside Korea due to its excellent economic efficiency.

  • Recently, plastic optical fiber draws a lot of attention as a new transmission medium for local area network (LAN) and home network applications. As PMMA based GI-POF (Graded Index Plastic Optical Fiber) has very low loss at about 500 nm and 650 nm wavelengths, it is very important to have a compact ultra short optical pulse source at these wavelength windows. In this paper, we have investigated detailed characteristics of gain switched laser system by using a commercially available low cost RF devices and an InGaAlP Fabry Perot semiconductor laser operating at 650 nm wavelength. The shortest optical 'pulse obtained was 33 psec with 1 GHz repetition rate. Depending on the DC bias current and the modulation frequency, the FWHM and the pulse energy of the gain switched pulses show 33.3-82.8 psec and 0.97-9.69 pI respectively. Also, the spectral bandwidths for CW and gain switched operations are 0.44 nm and 1.50 nm. We believe that these results are quite useful for high bit rate optical transmission applications with PMMA based plastic optical fibers in addition to estimate properties of ultra fast optical components and electro-optic devices. vices.

  • The flow-induced vibration in a heat exchanger may cause the damage to piping. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the flow induced vibration characteristics for the structural stability of a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study was to compare the generation, development, and separation characteristics of a vortex around a circular tube with respect to time when the flow velocity of the inlet was fluctuating constantly and periodically. The time characteristics of lift and drag and the PSD characteristics were also investigated. In the case of a constant inlet flow velocity, the well-known Kalman vorticity distribution was shown. The vortex generation, growth, and separation were also observed alternately at the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of periodic inlet flow velocity, the vortex occurred simultaneously in the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of constant inlet flow velocity, the magnitude of the lift PSD was 500 times larger than that of drag. The frequency was 31.15 Hz and that of drag was doubled at 62.3 Hz. In case of a periodic inlet flow velocity, the PSD of the drag was approximately 500 times larger than that of lift. The frequency was 15.57 Hz, which was the same as the inlet-flow velocity frequency. In addition, the frequency of lift was 31.15 Hz, which was the same Karman vortex frequency.

  • The temporal and spatial characteristics of wind fields over the neighbouring seas of the Korean peninsula are investigated using 10-years daily wind data during 1978${\sim}$1987 which have been spatially smoothed and low-pass filtered. Long term annual and monthly means are examined for synoptic patterns and spectral analyses are made for temporal variability and spatial coherence. Spatial patterns of the annual mean wind stress and curl have a strong resemblance with those of monthly means during the winter season. Two outstanding periodicities are observed at 1 and 2 cycles per year. The synoptic winds over the study area are highly coherent at both the annual and semi-annual periodicities. However, each basin has its own characteristic spatial pattern. For instance, the prevailing wind during the winter season is northerIy over the northern East Sea (ES), Yellow Sea (YS), and northern East China Sea (ECS), while it is northwesterly over the southern ES and northesterly over the northern ES and southern ECS. At the same time, the wind stress curl is positive over the northern ES and southern ECS, while it is negative over the southern ES, YS and northern ECS. On the other hand, the wind field during the summer season, with its strength being much reduced, is completely different from that during the winter season, and frequent passage of tropical storms provokes large temporal variability over ECS. One remarkable point is that the annual cycle, dominated by the Siberian High, tends to propagate from northeast to southwest, i.e., from northern 25 toward southern ES, YS and ECS, while the semi-annual cycle propagates in the opposite direction, from southwest to northeast. The semi-annual periodicity may reflect development of extratropical cyclones in spring and fall which frequently cross the Korean peninsula. In higher frequencies, there are no dominant periodicities, but local winds over YS and ES are highly correlated for frequencies larger than 0.1 cycles per day and phase difference increases linearly with frequency. This linear increase of phase corresponds to phase speed of 550 and 730 km/d at 0.1 and 0.3 cpd, respectively, The phase speed is apparently coincident with moving speed of extratropical cyclones across the Korean peninsula in the west-east direction.

  • To effectively utilize a flash and predict its effects on an infrared device, it is essential to know the infrared characteristics of the flash source. In this paper, a study of the IR characteristics of flash light sources is carried out. The IR characteristics of three flash sources, of which two are combustive and the other is explosive, are measured with an IR characteristic measurement system over the middle- and long-wavelength infrared ranges. From the measurements, the radiances over the two IR ranges and the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted. The IR radiance of flash A is found to be the strongest among the three, followed by those of sources C and B. It is also shown that the IR radiance of flash A is about 10 times stronger than that of flash B, even though these two sources are the same type of flash with the same powder. This means that the IR radiance intensity of a combustive flash source depends only on the amount of powder, not on the characteristics of the powder. From the measured radiance over MWIR and LWIR ranges for each flashes, the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted by fitting the measured data to blackbody radiance. The best-fit radiative temperatures (equivalent to black-body temperatures) of the three flash sources A, B, and C are 3300, 1120, and 1640 K respectively. From the radiance measurements and radiative temperatures of the three flash sources, it is shown that a combustive source radiates more IR energy than an explosive one; this mean, in turn, that the effects of a combustive flash on an IR device are more profound than those of an explosive flash source. The measured IR radiances and radiative temperatures of the flash sources in this study can be used to estimate the effects of flashes on various IR devices, and play a critical role for the modeling and simulation of the effects of a flash source on various IR devices.
