An Experimental Study on the Application of Porous Scoria Concrete to Artificial Reefs for Soft Coral (연산호 육성용 어초 개발을 위한 송이 다공성 콘크리트의 적용성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In the study application of volcanic scoria concrete to artificial reefs is investigated. Volcanic scoria is a natural volcanic product that shows light weight, mil/i-porous, and far-infrared irradiation characteristics. The properties of volcanic scoria concrete using Jeju scoria aggregate are evaluated by conducting a comprehensive series of tests on strength and void ratio. It is concluded that the volcanic scoria concrete has the sufficient strength of 4MPa-13MPa and adequate void ratio of $12\%-35\%$ to be accepted as artificial reef concrete. The field experiments are performed through observation by scuba diver's at the Seogwipo coast. Porous specimen and plane concrete specimen are prepared for comparison purposes. Seasonal changes of soft coral on the two series of test specimens were have been observed from Apr. 9, 2004 to Mar. 18, 2005. The soft coral is well grown on the porous specimen however there are no significant changes on the conventional plain concrete specimen. Thus it is concluded that the volcanic scoria concrete is highly suitable as artificial reef concrete.

Changes in pre-osteoblast cells associated with non-precious metal cores with dental implants: Pilot test (치과용 임플란트 적용 비귀금속 코어와 관련된 전조골세포의 변화)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the non-precious metal core materials used in the dental laboratory to fabricate the implant superstructure by CAD / CAM method. And to observe and compare the morphology and distribution of the osteoblasts in relation to implant osseointegration. Methods: In this study, the mandibular right first molar tooth model was selected as an international standard to produce a single core. Using this model, the impression was made with the silicone rubber, the tooth model was scanned, and a single core was designed and 5-axis milling was performed. The materials used were Cobalt-Chromium and Nickel-Chromium, and the cores for dental implant top structures were fabricated according to the procedures of the dental labs. After the fabrication, the marginal area of the core was separated and cell culture experiment was performed. The osteoblast cells used MC3T3-E1, which is currently widely used. For morphological analysis of osteoblasts, cells were posttreated and observed using CLSM (Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope) and compared. Results: The cell adhesion behavior of the specimen surface measured by CLSM was uniformly distributed in specimen A (Cobalt-Chromium) than in specimen B (Nickel-Chromium). The distribution and changes of the cells were different in the two specimens. Conclusion : It is possible to confirm that specimen A (Cobalt-Chromium) is suitable for the living body through adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts related to implant osseointegration in the non-precious metal superstructure used after implantation. It is considered that it is preferable to use Co-Cr when fabricating the superstructure.

The Stress -Strain Behavior of Sand in Torsion Shear Tests (비틀림전단시험에 의한 모래의 응력 -변형률 거동)

  • A series of torsion shear tests were performed to study the drained stress -strain behavior of medium dense Santa Monica Beach sand under various stress paths. The torque was applied to both clockwise and counterclockwise directions at the end of hollow cylinder specimen. Two clip gages had been previously used to measure the changes in wall thickness and diameter of the specimen. In this study, however, the lateral strain was determined by measuring volume changes in specimen. Specimens were prepared by the air pluviation method and gaseous carbon deozide( CO2) was used to measure precisely volumetric strain in specimen. The drained stress -strain behavior of cohesionless Boils during rotation of principal stress directions was analysed based on the results of torsion shear tests. The coupling of mal stress were applied. It was also found from the test results that the atrial strain at failure decreased with increasing value.

  • The dynamic characteristics such as resonant frequencies and dampings have been utilized as important parameters in dynamic behavior and inverse analyses. In general, the dynamic parameters have been determined based on design and experimental data, but experimental studies on the time-dependent changes of the dynamic parameters during service have rarely been conducted. Especially, unlike highway bridges, it is much easier for railroad bridges to estimate accumulated amount of fatigue because of the controlled train operation, and the study of dynamic characteristic change due to fatigue is useful, since it can enhance the accuracy of dynamic analysis. In this paper, the dynamic characteristic change due to fatigue is measured via the modal test on the PSC girder during a fatigue test. The test specimen utilized in the test is the IT girder which enhances the sectional capacity of the conventional PSC girders. The test specimen is designed 10m long and the modal tests are conducted during the application of fatigue load two million times. The test result shows that considerable changes in the measured dynamic parameters are observed as the fatigue accumulates, and these changes during the service life should be considered in designing railroad bridges.

Structural and Morphological Changes of Co Nanoparticles and Au-10at.%Pd Thin Film Studied by in Situ Heating in a Transmission Electron Microscope

  • The microstructural changes in Co nanoparticles and an Au-10at.%Pd thin film have been investigated using an in situ heating holder with a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS). In Co nanoparticles, two phases (face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal structures) were found to coexist at room temperature and microstructures at temperatures, higher than $1,000^{\circ}C$, were observed with a quick response time and significant stability. The actual temperature of each specimen was directly estimated from the changes in the lattice spacing (Bragg-peak separation). For the Au-10at.%Pd thin film, at a set temperature of $680^{\circ}C$, the actual temperature of the sample was estimated to be $1,020^{\circ}C{\pm}123^{\circ}C$. Note that the specimen temperature should be carefully evaluated because of the undesired effects, i.e., the temperature non-uniformity due to the sample design of the MEMS chip, and distortion due to thermal expansion.

Properties of CFRP by VaRTM process and its application to automobile engine hood (VaRTM 공법을 이용한 자동차용 엔진후드 개발)

  • The using of composite material is an aviation field but it changes into a general industry. Especially composites are expanding the use on transportation vehicles like automobiles, ships, and aircrafts. The main factor of this expansion is high specific strength. It can supply a high quality and efficiency of energy. But manufacturing of composite products requires many raw materials and tooling cost for special process, so we needs a reduction of these costs to achieve best efficiency. In the present study, we contrast the change of mechanical and physical properties between VaRTM(Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) and hand lay-up process. VaRTM process can offer a high quality the same as autoclave products, and low cost like hand lay-up process. In the results of mechanical tests, VaRTM specimen is stronger than hand lay-up specimen and hand lay-up specimen became delamination. In the results of physical tests, the resin content of VaRTM specimen is lower than hand lay-up specimen. On micrograph, the strength of specimen by VaRTM between fiber and resin is stronger than that of one by hand lay-up. And the specimen by hand lay-up contains more defects than one by VaRTM. So, VaRTM process can practically apply for automobile engine hood. This paper shows that VaRTM process is one of the most suitable processes for composite parts of automobile.

The Aging Characteristics of an RS-P/M Al-Zn-Mg- Zr-Mn-Cu Alloy (급속응고 분말법으로 제조한 Al-Zn-Mg-Zr-Mn-Cu합금의 시효특성)

  • In this study the changes of the hardness and microstructures during aging at 120$^{\cire}C$ of an RS-P/M Al-5.6wt%Zn-2.0wt%Mg-1.3wt%Zr-1.0wt%Mn-0.25wt%Cu alloy were studied using a transmission electron microscopy. The hardness increased rapidly at early stage of aging and reached the maximun when the specimen was aged for 24 hr. The many irregular-shaped $Al_4Mn$ and rod-shaped $Al_6Mn$ dispersoids with 0.1-0.4 $\mu$m in length were observed in the as-extruded alloy. The dark particles with 2-3 nm in size were observed in aged specimen for 5hr and those are thought to be G.P.zones or precursor of $\eta'$ precipitates. In aged specimen for 24 hr, the $\eta'$ phases were distributed homogeneously within the matrix and the PFZ with 30-40 nm in width was observed along the grain boundary. With further aging, the width of PFZ increased and $\eta$ phases were also detected within the matrix.

Instrumented Drop Weight Impact Testing of Polymer Materials (계장화에 의한 고분자 재료의 낙하추식 충격시험)

  • Polymer materials have been used offensively as construction materials for automobiles, ships, and airplanes in recent years, and their impact resistance has been obliged to be examined. In the present study, a dropped load and a specimen, equipped with high responsible strain gauges respectively, were dropped and then the changes of load and absorption energy with time were observed. It was found that the waveforms for dropped weight coincided with output signal wave for specimen during the destruction test. Based on this experimental result, three disc type of specimens with different compositions were prepared and examined. This instrumented impact test method showed that each specimen can be distinguished from each other better than conventional tests and is expected to contribute to assess test results of impact resistance for some materials under development.

Characteristics of Porous Wollastonite Ceramics Fabricated by Hydrothermal Synthesis (수열 합성에 의해 제조된 다공성 Wollastonite Ceramics의 특성)

  • The porous wollastonite ceramics were fabricated after firing calcium silicates, obtained using natural resources and by-products of power plants by hydrothermal synthesis, without organic fibers or asbestos for reinforcement agent. A specimen from diatomite as a SiO2 staring raw material had the highest strength owing to normal grain growth and good densification from homogeneous sperhcial C-S-H hydrates. A specimen from SiO2 sol as a SiO2 starting raw material showed tobermolite, but fly ash and mixed system did xonotlite after hydrothermal synthesis. The specimen from fly ash showed the lowest firing shirikage and strength changes in the firing range from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The other phases in all specimens changed to wollastonite phase after firing at 100$0^{\circ}C$. Also the average pore size was distributed from 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
