Madhupur National Park (MNP) is one of the last remaining patches of old-growth natural Sal forest left in Bangladesh where the forest is tropical moist deciduous type. A study was revealed to assess the tree species diversity and composition in this area. For determining tree species the study was conducted through extensive random quadrat survey methods with $20m{\times}20m$ sized plots. Results of the study indicated that there were 139 tree species belonging to 100 genera and 40 families. The quadrat survey assessed the basal area, stem density, diversity indices and importance value index of the tree species having ${\geq}5cm$ D.B.H (Diameter at Brest Height). The basal area and stem density of the tree species were $20.689{\pm}1.08m^2/ha$ and $1412.93{\pm}64.27stem\;ha^{-1}$ while, diversity indices, i.e. Shannon-Wiener's diversity, Simpson's evenness, Margalef's species richness and Pielou's dominance indices indicated poor diversity in comparison to that of other PAs (Protected Areas) in South-Eastern region of Bangladesh. The structural composition based on height and D.B.H through reverse-J shaped curve indicated higher regeneration and recruitment but removal of trees of large growth classes. Sal (Shorea robusta) was the most dominant tree species that accounts 75% of the total tree individuals in the natural forest patches. However, some associates of Sal, i.e. Bhutum (Hymenodictyon orixensis), Gadila (Careya arborea), and Kusum (Schleichera oleosa) etc. were seemed to be rare in MNP.
In order to analyze a status of animal in an area where has been became a land cause of Jindo Grand Bridge established on Jindo island area, mammal status in the biggest mountain in Jindo province, Mt. Cheomchalsan has been investigated for four times from May to October of 2016. According to the investigation, 5 orders, 9 families and 15 species of inhabitation was confirmed, and water deer (Hydropotes inermis), raccoon (Nyctereutes procyonoides), cat (Felis catus), and etcetera were dominant. Biodiversity and evenness index were likely to be high as 2.24 and 0.83, respectively and it is considered that favorable condition of natural ecosystem for inhabitation of mammalian is established. Meanwhile, since the cat designated as control species is confirmed as a dominant species, it is supposed that continuous management is necessary.
Counts of herb stems were made with each systematic grid sized 10cm by 1300cm within six apparently homogeneous herb layers under the open young Japanese red pine, Pinus densiflora, stands. The stands had often been subjected to strong human interferences such as burning, cutting, grazing, and denuding since human settlement until the conservation scheme practiced in these stands for last decade. In addition, amounts of loss of ignition and field capacity were determined to detect soil heterogeneity among and within the stands. The values of information measure of diversity(H), and Hurlbert's probability of interspecfic encounter(Δ), obtained here do not show any consistent correlation. The amount of interspecific competetion(Δ1), the ratio of interspecific to intraspecific competetion(Δ4), Levin's niche breadth(Sh), and species evenness(V), increase, while the amount of intraspecific competetion decrease, as the soil factors become favorable. One stand examined does not follow the above trends, which is more young and shows strong within site heterogeneity of the soil factors. The stand includes pioneer species which is not detectable without detailed observation. It is argued that in stable or favorable environment more intense interspecific competetion and less intraspecific competetion might occur, but this situation does not necessarily always bring smaller niche breadth. In this connection, the results support Hurlbert's contention that the two components of diversity should be analyzed separately.
This study was carried out to investigate vegetation structure and soil property of natural habitat of Polygonatum stenophyllum to provide basic information for propagation, conservation and restoration. Habitats of Polygonatum stenophyllum were classified into Hemiptelea davidii-Robinia pseudo-acacia dominant population (Yeongwol-eup), Pinus densiflora-Hemiptelea davidii-Callicarpa japonica dominant population (Nam-myeon), and Hemiptelea davidii-Rubus crataegifolius dominant population (Gangchon-ri). The soil pH 6.49~7.28; and electron conductivity 0.10~0.19 ds/m. The average content of organic matter, total nitrogen, available $P_2O_5$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$, and $Na^+$ were 8.24~16.45 g/kg, 0.02~0.13%, 45.67~123.67 mg/kg, 4.61~6.71 cmol(+)/kg, 0.17~0.63 cmol(+)/kg, 0.06~0.27 cmol(+)/kg and 0.03~0.30 cmol(+)/kg, respectively. Species diversity index (H'), maximum species diversity index (H' max), evenness (J') and dominance (1-J') of investigated sites ranged 1.0323 (Nam-myeon)~1.1134 (Yeongwol -eup), 1.4914 (Gangchon-ri)~1.6128 (Nam-myeon), 0.6401 (Nam-myeon)~0.7270 (Yeongwol-eup) and 0.2730 (Yeongwol-eup)~0.3599 (Nam-myeon) respectively.
This report is results of an investigation on the secondary succession and species diversity of the burned area. Fifty hectares of pine forest was burned by the crown fire of the spring (April 6) 1986. The results obtained from spring 1989 were summarized as follows: In the burned area , site and unburned area (U), the vascular plant fo 69 kinds, 49 kinds and 24 kinds were lsted respectively. The life form spectrum of burned area was H---e type, which is common type in most burned area and that unburned area, H---e type. The species diversity (H)and evenness index (e) of burned area (, site) were H=2.51, 1.65 and e=0.59, 0.44 and those of unburned area (U) were H=1.28 and e=0.40. The similarity index was the value of 0.594 in - and 0.236 in -U site. The similarity between and site was greater than between site and U site, and that between and U-site, The dominance index (c) of , and U-site was 0.16, 0.39 and 0.42 respectively. The succession degree (DS) of , and U-site was 244.0, 227.6 and 854.4 respectively. Soil pH, available phosphorous, and exchangeable potassium in the burned area were higher than those in the unburned area, and total nitrogen, organic carbon, and C/N ratio in the burned area were higher than those in the unburned area, and organic matter in the burned area was higher than that in the unburned area.

This study was executed to investigate the vegetation structure and to propose the administration planning of the Royal Ancestor's Shrine. Five sites sampled in the study area with the clumped sampling method. Pinus koraiensis community covered 27.3% and Quercus aliena community 61.5% of total forest area when considering the actual vegetation. This area of environmental impact grade 3 and 4 area covered 46.9% and it should be restored. The ecological diversity, i.e. species diversity and evenness, showed low class, and especially site 2 which was controlled the user's after 1985 showed the lowest value. Pinus koraiensis community which is a dominant species now in the study area shall be succeed to Quercus aliena community. Robinia pseudoacacia at the eastern wall shall be excluded step by step and it shall be replaced with native species gradually. Ailanthus altissima, Populus ${\times}$ albaglandulosa and Styrax japonica which had higher selection invaded conspicuously the bare land. As the administration planning of the study area, Pinus koraiensis and Styrax japonica shall be thinned out gradually and it shall be replaced with Quercus aliena and Acer palmatum.

In order to establish fundamental data for stream restoration and environmental flow, we investigated inhabitation and species diversity of fish to substrate size in the typical streams of Geum River Basin. Field monitoring including fish sampling was conducted from October 2007 to October 2009. Substrate size was determined according to six different : silt (Si), sand (Sa), fine gravel (Fg), coarse gravel (Cg), cobbles (Co) and boulders (Bo). A total number of fish caught in the 18 sites was 7,649 representing 10 families 50 species, and Si, Sa, Fg, Cg, Co and Bo stations occupied 30, 29, 38, 30, 27 and 17 species, respectively. The most frequently found species in number was pale chum (Zacco platypus, 29.7%, n=2,275) followed by Z. koreanus (22.5%, n=1,720) in total stations. Biological diversity with increase of substrate size from the dominance of part species showed higher values as dominance index, lower and diversity, richness and evenness index. Index of biological integrity (IBI) and qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI) scores decreased with increase of substrate size. Therefore, it is necessary to make an effort on stream rehabilitation with evaluation of physical habitat condition by indicator species in order to maintain biodiversity and perform ecological restoration.
This study was conducted to investigate the developmental process of plant community during the secondary succession and the dynamics of soil properties in the burned and unburned areas of Mt. Ch’oly-san. Owing to the forest fire occurred on April, 1989, the red pine(Pinus densiflora) forest and its floor vegetation were burned down. The floristic composition of burned and unburned areas were composed of 53 and 49 species of vascular plants, respectively. The dominant species based on SDR4 of the burned sites were lespedeza cyrtobotrya (89.62), Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (62.50), and Carex humilis (58.73), Quercus serrata (43.33). In contrast, Pinus densiflora (83.56), Lespedeza cyrtobotrya (55.57), Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (51.88) and Carex humilis (50.41) were dominant in the unburned area. The biological spectra showed the $H-D_1-R_5-e$ type in both the burned and unburned areas. The indices of similarity ($CC_S$) between the two areas were 0.74. Degree of succession (DS) was 604 in the burned area and 802 in the unburned area. From these facts, it is assumed that the succession is rapidly progressing because of the recovery of vegetation. The species diversity ($\={H}$) and evenness index(C) in the burned and unburned areas were 0.15 and 0.18, respectively. Red pine tree did not resprout after scorch by the forest fire, but Lespedeza, Quercus, Rhododendron, Albizzia, and Zanthoxylum resprouted from the roots and trunks after the forest fire. It seems that these species are the fire-resistant species. Soil properties such as soil pH, content of organic matter, available phosphous, total nitrogen, tatal carbon, exchangeable potssium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium increased due to forest fire. These results suggest the intensity of forest fire in the study area was relatively weak. Monthly changes of soil properties were of little significance except for some cases.
Fish, caught by bottom trawling in the middle of the Yellow sea (east of Korea), in the spring and summer of 2016 were assessed for species composition and fluctuation in their abundance. The fish were studied at four research stations (St.) and were found to be composed of 46 species, 31 families, and 14 orders. The dominant species caught were Engraulis japonicus, Larimichthys polyactis, Johnius grypotus, Liparis tanakae, and Larimicthys crocea. All the species were assessed for their numbers, richness, diversity, and dominance to gain a measure of the biodiversity. The highest number of individuals was recorded at St. 4 (50,053 individuals), while the lowest number of individuals was recorded at St. 1 (44,090 individuals). The evenness index was the highest at St. 2 (E = 0.65) and lowest at St. 3 (E = 0.62). The diversity index was the highest at St. 4 (H' = 2.31) and lowest at St. 3 (H' = 2.23). Furthermore, the dominance index was the highest at St. 3 (D = 54.9%) and lowest at St. 2 (D = 47.7%).
Changes of the species diversity and development of vegetation structure during abandoned field succession after shifting cultivation were investigated in Pyoungchang, Gangwon-Do, Korea. The height of top layer tended to increase rapidly during the earlier successional stages and stabilize in the later successional stage. The heights of top layer in the 10, 20, 50 and 80 year old-field were 4, 9, 18 and 18 m, respectively. In this region, thirty five year after abandonment need for the development to the normal forest formed by 4 stratum structure, tree, sub-tree, shrub and herb layer. Among the vegetation values, Ivc showed a tendency to increase logarithmically, and Hcl a tendency to increase linearly during abandoned field succession. Species diversity showed the peak in mid-successional stages ($10{\sim}20$ year old-field) and declined slightly thereafter. Species diversity was correlated closely with the species richness than the evenness. The most woody species established in the earlier stage ($2{\sim}6$ year old-field) and turned over their dominance step by step during succession. These results support the IFC model proposed by Egler (1954).
