Integrating Pronunciation into a Classroom and on the Web

  • The aim of this presentation is to suggest a method of integrating the teaching of pronunciation into a typical communicative classroom and on the web. This presentation seeks the way by analyzing useful communicative expressions with a speech analyzer for English learners to see the sound pattern of those expressions and say them right. It is hoped that this presentation will prompt teachers to understand the current role of pronunciation in communicative English programs and that the WWW can help students improve their pronunciation to develop their speaking and listening skills. It also suggests the need for a database of visualized communicative expressions.

Comparison Survey Examining Korean and Japanese University Students' Understanding of Foreign Words

  • This paper investigated the influence of foreign words, otherwise known as loan words, on global communication abilities of university students from two non English-speaking countries: Korea and Japan. To survey the understanding and usage of foreign words which are from English language and used frequently in daily conversation, questionnaires were administered to Korean and Japanese university students majoring in engineering who shared similar linguistic backgrounds. The results were analyzed from global communication viewpoint. Based on the results, methods for improving global communication skills in engineering education were proposed.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of group therapy on the language performance of aphasic patients. Four aphasic subjects participated in group therapy. Their aphasic types were TCMA (transcortical motor aphasia), conduction, anomie, and Broca's aphasia. The focus of the therapy was to stimulate cooperative learning skills. For this purpose, categorization tasks, semantic association tasks, convergent thinking, and divergent thinking tasks were employed. The results showed that all of the aphasic subjects demonstrated some improvement in writing ability, categorization ability, and speaking ability in sentences.

부부관계 향상 프로그램을 통한 결혼초기 부부의 의사소통 능력 증진에 관한 연구 - 유아기 가족의 부부를 중심으로 - (A Study on Communication Improvement for the Early Marriage through Marital Relationship Enhancement Program)

  • The goal of this study is to develop a program which can improve couples' communication skills that serve to enhance their relationships and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The summary of major result of the research were as follows; 1 The content of communication program for couples in the early marriage focused on improvement of communication skills, on enhancement of couples' intimacy and on coping ability for marriage life. 2. The developed program served to communication improvement for couples in the early marriage. Analyzing specifically the results of test before and after, the average scores of sub-areas such as listening, speaking and solving problems were all increased after the program than before the program. Significant differences of sub-areas appeared, either. 3. The developed program contributed to enhancement of couples' mutual understanding and their relationships.

한국 고기능 자폐아동의 담화화용과 문법 능력의 상호 관계에 관한 분석 연구 (An Analysis of the Development of Communicative Skills and Grammar in Three Korean Children with Autism)

  • The present paper is concerned with assessing both communicational skills and grammatical knowledge in three Korean-speaking children with a range in age from 9;11 to 12;2 and in MLU from 1.68 to 2.22. It was found that all three autistic children's speech was largely repetitive and echolalic, unable to consistently interact communicatively on the ongoing joint focus of attention. It was also observed that the more repetitive the child speech was, the more impaired morpho-syntactically it was. Based on these findings, it was speculated that the deficit in joint focus of attention might relate to grammatical development.

Computerized English Pronunciation Testing

  • The past decade has witnessed the abundant use of computer in testing language skills such as listening and reading. Compared with these language skills, we have experienced little use of computer in testing a speaking skill including pronunciation. This is largely due to limitations of the current computer technology. One of such limitations for testing pronunciation is to store and automatically evaluate what the learner utters. Due to this limitation, the computer simply stores what the learner utters and raters evaluate it afterward on a certain rating continuum. With the advent of voice recognition technology, however, the computer has been able to test pronunciation in a systematic way. This technology enables the computer to identify, visually show, and evaluate the learner's intonation pattern by means of autocorrection. The evaluation is expressed in terms of the degree in which the learner's intonation pattern overlaps with that of the native speaker of the target language. In particular, the degree is numerically displayed on the screen, and this numeral is considered as the score of the learner's utterance under our testing framework.

통 문장 암기와 짝 활동을 통한 한국어말하기 향상 융합전략 (A Convergence Strategy of Improving Korean Speaking Skills through Memorizing Whole Sentence and Pair Works)

  • 이 논문에서는 외국학생들이 한국어를 배울 때 통 문장암기방법과 짝 활동이 말하기능력향상에 효과가 있는지를 알아보고자 했다. 먼저 통 문장암기방법에 대한 효과를 다루고 있는 논문의 선행연구를 살펴보았고, 이 연구에서 활용한 학습자의 활동은 주로 외국학생끼리 짝 활동이므로 이에 대한 방법을 설명하였다. 이 활동은 수업시간에 학습자의 한국어 사용빈도를 높이고자 시도했고, 동시에 학습자간에 지속적인 학습을 서로 돕도록 의도했다. 이 융합교수접근법에 힘입어 수업시간에 학습자들의 한국어 활용빈도가 크게 향상되었다. 이는 각 짝을 중국학생과 베트남학생으로 구성하였기 때문에 학습자들은 한국어를 사용할 수밖에 없었기 때문이었다. 이 활동을 통해 학습자들은 서로 격려하고 도움을 줌으로써 외국어학습을 지속적으로 하게하는 동기부여나 힘을 얻을 수 있었다고 설문과 인터뷰에서 밝혔다. 특히 설문조사에서 학생들은 이 융합교수법에 대해 참여 학습자 거의 모두가 만족했음을 보여주었다.

Narrative and Grammatical Analyses of Story-retelling in Chinese Speakers of Korean as a Second Language

  • Although the narrative development and the acquisition of the Korean grammatical morphemes by monolingual Korean-speaking children have been studied extensively, little is known about the narrative characteristics and the processes through which native speakers of other languages (L2 speakers) use the Korean grammatical morphemes. To understand the similarities and differences between L1 and L2 narrative skills and Korean grammatical morpheme use, 13 native Chinese-speaking college students who are learning Korean as a second language were studied. L2 participants used significantly fewer words, subordinate clauses, connective morphological endings, and pronouns per T-unit. Their speech also illustrated significantly more omission and confusion (substitution) errors in the use of auxiliary words and verb endings. Some of the syntactic and morphological factors need to be considered for the intervention of speakers with limited Korean proficiency.

A Corpus-based Lexical Analysis of the Speech Texts: A Collocational Approach

  • Recently speech texts have been increasingly used for English education because of their various advantages as language teaching and learning materials. The purpose of this paper is to analyze speech texts in a corpus-based lexical approach, and suggest some productive methods which utilize English speaking or writing as the main resource for the course, along with introducing the actual classroom adaptations. First, this study shows that a speech corpus has some unique features such as different selections of pronouns, nouns, and lexical chunks in comparison to a general corpus. Next, from a collocational perspective, the study demonstrates that the speech corpus consists of a wide variety of collocations and lexical chunks which a number of linguists describe (Lewis, 1997; McCarthy, 1990; Willis, 1990). In other words, the speech corpus suggests that speech texts not only have considerable lexical potential that could be exploited to facilitate chunk-learning, but also that learners are not very likely to unlock this potential autonomously. Based on this result, teachers can develop a learners' corpus and use it by chunking the speech text. This new approach of adapting speech samples as important materials for college students' speaking or writing ability should be implemented as shown in samplers. Finally, to foster learner's productive skills more communicatively, a few practical suggestions are made such as chunking and windowing chunks of speech and presentation, and the pedagogical implications are discussed.

사진실 교수의 전통연희 교육관과 초등 연극교육의 접점 모색 (Seeking the Contact Points of Traditional Drama Education and Elementary Drama Education of Prof. Sa-Jinsil)

  • 본 글은 고 사진실 교수의 '전통연희 시리즈 1~9'를 계승하기 위해, 고 사진실 교수가 견지하였던 전통연희 교육관과 초등 연극교육의 접점을 모색한 것이다. 고 사진실 교수의 전통연희 교육관은 제7권과 제8권에 구체적으로 반영되어 있는데, 2015 개정 교육과정에서 제시하고 있는 인재상, 연극 교육을 통한 인문학적 소양 함양과 접점을 보이는 시각들을 예견하여 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. 즉 전통연희 관련 인문지식(인문자원)을 체계적으로 습득하여, 실제의 공연 제작현장에서 그것을 창조적으로 재현할 수 있는 학생, 즉 창의융합형 인재를 목표로 했다는 점에서 그 의의가 확인된다. 그런데 2015 개정 교육과정에서 중시한 창의융합형 인재를 양성하기 위해서는 '논리적으로 말하기'뿐만 아니라 '재미있게 말하기' 능력을 함양시키는 것도 요구된다고 본다. 그와 관련하여 필자는 고 사진실 교수가 주목하였던, 한국의 전통 연극 중의 하나인 재담을 연극교육의 대안으로 제시하였다. 정규 수업에서 재담을 활용함으로써 한국의 전통 연극 공연 양식을 계승할 수 있다는 점, 재담의 일인극적(一人劇的) 특성과 소극적(笑劇的) 특성이 '재미있게 말하기'와 밀접한 관련이 있고, 이는 '논리적으로 말하기' 교육만을 강조하는 데서 발생하는 감성 공감교육의 미비점을 정규 수업을 통해 보완할 수 있다는 점, 재담은 자기 자신이나 현실을 비판적으로 성찰하되 재미있게 전달함으로써 청중의 공감을 얻을 수 있는 설득적 스토리텔링으로써의 가능성이 충분하다는 점 등에서 의미가 있다고 본다. 이때 고 사진실 교수의 저작물 및 문화콘텐트와 교육 관련 아이디어들을 담고 있는 전통연희 시리즈 1~9는 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
