In ubiquitous environments, many applications need to process data with time and space dimensions. Because of this, there is growing attention not only on gathering spatiotemporal data in ubiquitous environments, but also on processing such data in databases. In order to obtain the full benefits from spatiotemporal data, we need a data model that naturally expresses the properties of spatiotemporal data. In this paper, we introduce three spatiotemporal data models extended from temporal data models. The main goal of this paper is to determine which data model is less complex in the spatiotemporal context. To this end, we compare their query languages in the complexity aspect because the complexity of a query language is tightly coupled with its underlying data model. Throughout our investigations, we show that it is important to intertwine space and time dimensions and keep one-to-one correspondence between an object in the real world and a tuple in a database in order to naturally express queries in ubiquitous applications.

Spatiotemporal databases support methods of recording and querying for spatiotemporal data to user by offering both spatial management and historical information on various types of objects in the real world. We can answer to the following query in real world: 'What is the average of volume of pesticide sprayed for cach farm land from April to August on 2001, within some query window' Such aggregation queries have both temporal and spatial constraint. However, previous works for aggregation are attached only to temporal aggregation or spatial aggregation. So they have problems that are difficult to apply for spatiotemporal data directly which have both spatial and temporal constraint. Therefore, in this paper, we propose spatiotemporal aggregate functions for analysis of spatiotemporal data which have spatiotemporal characteristic, such as stCOUNT, stSUM, stAVG, stMAX, stMIN. We also show that our proposal resulted in the convenience and improvement of query in application systems, and facility of analysis on spatiotemporal data which the previous temporal or spatial aggregate functions are not able to analyze, by applying to the estate management system. Then, we show the validity of our algorithm performance through the evaluation of spatiotemporal aggregate functions.
Many continuous queries are important to be process efficiently in a data stream environment. It is applied a query index technique that takes linear performance irrespective of the number and width of intervals for processing many continuous queries. Previous researches are not able to support the dynamic insertion and deletion to arrange intervals for constructing an index previously. It shows that the insertion and search performance is slowed by the number and width of interval inserted. Many intervals have to be inserted and searched linearly in a data stream environment. Therefore, we propose Hashed Multiple Lists in order to process continuous queries linearly. Proposed technique shows fast linear search performance. It can be utilized the systems applying a sensor network, and preprocessing technique of spatiotemporal data mining.

The conventional geographic information systems(GIS) is a software which handles spatial and aspatial information of objects in the real world. The system can not support users time-varying information because it manipulates their snapshot data in the spatial database. Also even though it supports time-varying information, it is very limited and hs many difficulties in presenting and processing queries. This paper therefore describes an integrated spatiotemporal data model using loosely-coupled approach which is extended a time dimension for the previous spatial database and which handles time-varying historical information of spatial objects. Conclusionally this paper not only designed a data structure for spatiotemporal database, but also implemented spatial comparison operations varying over time.
GIS (geographic information system) applications increasingly require the representation of geospatial objects with fuzzy extent and querying of time-varying information. In this paper, we Introduce a FSTDB (fuzzy spatiotemporal database) to represent and manage states and events causing changes of dynamic fuzzy objects using fuzzy set theory. We also propose the algorithms for the operators to be included in a GIS to make it able to answer queries depending on fuzzy predicates during a time interval and a method to identify the development process of objects during a certain period based on the designed database. They can be used in application areas handling time-varying geospatial data, including global change (as in climate or land cover change) and social (demographic, health, ect.) application.
Pattern matching is increasingly being employed in various researches as health care service, RFID-based system, facility management, and surveillance. Geosensor filter correlates a data stream to match specific patterns in distribution environments. In this paper, we present a geosensor query language to represent efficiently declarative geosensor query. Geosensor operators are proposed to use for fast query processing in terms of spatial and temporal area in distribution environments. We also propose a geosensor filter to match new query predicates into incoming stream predicates. Our filter can reduce the volume of transmission data and save power consumption of sensors. It can be utilized the stream data mining system to process in real-time various data as location, time, and geosensor information in distribution environments.
The R-trees are usually used for an index of trajectories in moving-objects databases. However, they need to access a number of nodes to trace same trajectories because of considering only a spatial proximity. Overlaps and dead spaces should be minimized to enhance the performance of range queries in moving-objects indexes. Trajectories of moving-objects should be preserved to enhance the performance of the trajectory queries. In this paper, we propose the TP3DR-tree(Trajectory Preserved 3DR-tree) using clusters of trajectories for range and trajectory queries. The TP3DR-tree uses two split policies: one is a spatial splitting that splits the same trajectory by clustering and the other is a time splitting that increases space utilization. In addition, we use connecting information in non-leaf nodes to enhance the performance of combined-queries. Our experiments show that the new index outperforms the others in processing queries on various datasets.
Spatiotemporal moving objects are changing their Positions and/or shape over time in real world. As most of the indices of moving object are based on the R-tree. they have defects of the R-tree which are dead space and overlap. Some of the indices amplify the defects of the R-tree. In the paper, to solve the problems, we propose the MPR-tree(Moving Point R-tree) using Projection operation which has more effective search than existing moving point indices on time slice query and spatiotemporal range query. The MPR-tree connects positions of the same moving objects over time by using linked list, so it processes the combined query about trajectory effectively. The usefulness of the Projection operation is confirmed during processing moving object queries and in practical use of space from experimentation to compare MPR-tree with existing indices of moving objects. The proposed MPR-tree would be useful in the LBS, the car management using GPS, and the navigation system.
The trajectory preservation property that stores only one trajectory in a leaf node is the most important feature of an index structure, such as the TB-tree for retrieving object's moving paths in the spatio-temporal space. It performs well in trajectory-related queries such as navigational queries and combined queries. But, the MBR of non-leaf nodes in the TB-tree have large amounts of dead space because trajectory preservation is achieved at the sacrifice of the spatial locality of trajectories. As dead space increases, the overlap between nodes also increases, and, thus, the classical range query cost increases. We present a new split policy and entry relocation policies, which have no deterioration of the performance for trajectory-related queries, for improving the performance of range queries. To maximally reduce the dead space of a non-leaf node's MBR, the Maximal Area Reduction (MAR) policy is used as a split policy for non-leaf nodes. The entry relocation policy induces entries in non-leaf nodes to exchange each other for the purpose of reducing dead spaces in these nodes. We propose two algorithms for the entry relocation policy, and evaluate the performance studies of new algorithms comparing to the TB-tree under a varying set of spatio-temporal queries.

Location-based service is an important spatiotemporal database application area that provides the location-aware information of wireless terminals via positioning devices such as GPS. With the rapid advances of wireless communication systems, the requirement of mobile application areas including traffic, mobile commerce and supply chaining management became the center of attention for various research issues in spatiotemporal databases. In this paper we present the A-Quadtree, an efficient indexing method for answering location-based queries where the movement vector information (e.g., speed and velocity) is not presented. We implement the A-Quadtree with an index structure for object identifiers as a.Net component to apply the component to multiplatforms. We present our approach and describe the performance evaluation through various experiments. In our experiments, we compare the performance with previous approaches and show the enhanced efficiency of our method.
