Mining Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Trajectory Data

  • Spatio-temporal patterns extracted from historical trajectories of moving objects reveal important knowledge about movement behavior for high quality LBS services. Existing approaches transform trajectories into sequences of location symbols and derive frequent subsequences by applying conventional sequential pattern mining algorithms. However, spatio-temporal correlations may be lost due to the inappropriate approximations of spatial and temporal properties. In this paper, we address the problem of mining spatio-temporal patterns from trajectory data. The inefficient description of temporal information decreases the mining efficiency and the interpretability of the patterns. We provide a formal statement of efficient representation of spatio-temporal movements and propose a new approach to discover spatio-temporal patterns in trajectory data. The proposed method first finds meaningful spatio-temporal regions and extracts frequent spatio-temporal patterns based on a prefix-projection approach from the sequences of these regions. We experimentally analyze that the proposed method improves mining performance and derives more intuitive patterns.

Modelling and Simulating the Spatio-Temporal Correlations of Clustered Wind Power Using Copula

  • Modelling and simulating the wind power intermittent behaviour are the basis of the planning and scheduling studies concerning wind power integration. The wind power outputs are evidently correlated in space and time and bring challenges in characterizing their behaviour. This paper provides a methodology to model and simulate the clustered wind power considering its spatio-temporal correlations using the theory of copula. The sampling approach captures the complex spatio-temporal connections among the wind farms by employing a conditional density function calculated using multidimensional copula function. The empirical study of real wind power measurement shows how the wind power outputs are correlated and how these correlations affect the overall uncertainty of clustered wind power output. The case study validates the simulation technique by comparing the simulated results with the real measurements.

Abnormal Behavior Recognition Based on Spatio-temporal Context

  • This paper presents a new approach for detecting abnormal behaviors in complex surveillance scenes where anomalies are subtle and difficult to distinguish due to the intricate correlations among multiple objects' behaviors. Specifically, a cascaded probabilistic topic model was put forward for learning the spatial context of local behavior and the temporal context of global behavior in two different stages. In the first stage of topic modeling, unlike the existing approaches using either optical flows or complete trajectories, spatio-temporal correlations between the trajectory fragments in video clips were modeled by the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic model based on Markov random fields to obtain the spatial context of local behavior in each video clip. The local behavior topic categories were then obtained by exploiting the spectral clustering algorithm. Based on the construction of a dictionary through the process of local behavior topic clustering, the second phase of the LDA topic model learns the correlations of global behaviors and temporal context. In particular, an abnormal behavior recognition method was developed based on the learned spatio-temporal context of behaviors. The specific identification method adopts a top-down strategy and consists of two stages: anomaly recognition of video clip and anomalous behavior recognition within each video clip. Evaluation was performed using the validity of spatio-temporal context learning for local behavior topics and abnormal behavior recognition. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach in abnormal behavior recognition improved effectively and significantly in complex surveillance scenes.

  • This paper proposes a spatio-temporal correlation algorithm that takes advantage of the spatial and temporal correlations in video streams for error concealment. The spatio-temporal correlation algorithm sets the neighborhood area of the damaged part as a reference window, then finds the area that best matches the reference window in the previous frame. The best-matched area in the previous frame replaces the damaged part in the current frame. The results of ten variations of the proposed algorithm are compared with conventional error concealment methods. These methods include the ones applicable to P-frames as well as I-frames. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm is very efficient for l-frame error concealment with a large motion between frames.

Spatio-temporal dependent errors of radar rainfall estimate for rainfall-runoff simulation

  • Radar rainfall estimates have been widely used in calculating rainfall amount approximately and predicting flood risks. The radar rainfall estimates have a number of error sources such as beam blockage and ground clutter hinder their applications to hydrological flood forecasting. Moreover, it has been reported in paper that those errors are inter-correlated spatially and temporally. Therefore, in the current study, we tested influence about spatio-temporal errors in radar rainfall estimates. Spatio-temporal errors were simulated through a stochastic simulation model, called Multivariate Autoregressive (MAR). For runoff simulation, the Nam River basin in South Korea was used with the distributed rainfall-runoff model, Vflo. The results indicated that spatio-temporal dependent errors caused much higher variations in peak discharge than spatial dependent errors. To further investigate the effect of the magnitude of time correlation among radar errors, different magnitudes of temporal correlations were employed during the rainfall-runoff simulation. The results indicated that strong correlation caused a higher variation in peak discharge. This concluded that the effects on reducing temporal and spatial correlation must be taken in addition to correcting the biases in radar rainfall estimates. 커널 밀도 추정과 시공간 일치성을 이용한 동영상 객체 분할 (Video Object Segmentation using Kernel Density Estimation and Spatio-temporal Coherence)

  • 본 논문에서는 고정되지 않은 배경의 동영상에서 객체를 추출하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 추적에 기반을 둔 기법으로 크게 세 단계의 과정으로 이루어져 있다. 첫 번째 단계는 초기 분할로서, 사용자의 반응을 이용하여 첫 프레임의 분할 결과를 획득하는 과정이다. 초기 분할을 통해 획득된 결과 샘플은 커널 밀도 추정을 이용하여 각 매크로 블록별 컬러 확률 밀도 함수를 생성하는데 사용된다. 두 번째 단계에서는 각 프레임에 대해 이전 프레임의 경계 정보와 움직임 벡터를 이용하여 일치성 띠를 생성하고, 생성된 띠에 대한 시공간 확률을 추정한다. 마지막 단계에서는 각 픽셀별 컬러, 시공간, 스무드항의 합으로 구성된 에너지 함수를 최소화하여 최종 결과를 획득한다. 실험 결과를 통해서 본 논문에서 제안하는 기법이 정확한 분할 결과를 추출하는 지 다양한 테스트 영상을 통해 확인한다.

  • 항목 기반의 순차 패턴 마이닝 기법들을 시공간 데이타에 적용하기 위해서는 시공간 속성 값에 대한 적절한 이산화가 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 입력 데이타의 시공간적 상판 정보를 유지함과 동시에 데이타 수를 축소시킴으로써 마이닝 프로세스의 효율성을 높이는 이산화 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 선 단순화를 사용하여 궤적에 대한 근사치를 구함으로써 마이넘 단계에서 처리할 데이터 크기를 축소시킨다. 또한 단순화 된 궤적을 유사한 시공간적 특성을 가지는 논리적 그룹으로 군집화하여 데이터의 분포를 고려한 이산화를 수행한다. 실험을 통해 제안된 기법이 마이넝 프로세스의 효율성을 높일 뿐 아니라 보다 직관적이고 해석이 용이한 패턴을 도출하는 것을 보였다.

Spatio-temporal protocol for power-efficient acquisition wireless sensors based SHM

  • In this work, we address the so-called sensor reachback problem for Wireless Sensor Networks, which consists in collecting the measurements acquired by a large number of sensor nodes into a sink node which has major computational and power capabilities. Focused on applications such as Structural Health Monitoring, we propose a cooperative communication protocol that exploits the spatio-temporal correlations of the sensor measurements in order to save energy when transmitting the information to the sink node in a non-stationary environment. In addition to cooperative communications, the protocol is based on two well-studied adaptive filtering techniques, Least Mean Squares and Recursive Least Squares, which trade off computational complexity and reduction in the number of transmissions to the sink node. Finally, experiments with real acceleration measurements, obtained from the Canton Tower in China, are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Relationships Between Cognitive Function and Gait-Related Dual-Task Interference After Stroke

  • Previous studies have reported that decreased cognitive ability has been consistently associated with significant declines in performance of one or both tasks under a dual-task walking condition. This study examined the relationship between specific cognitive abilities and the dual-task costs (DTCs) of spatio-temporal gait parameters in stroke patients. The spatio-temporal gait parameters were measured among 30 stroke patients while walking with and without a cognitive task (Stroop Word-Color Task) at the study participant's preferred walking speed. Cognitive abilities were measured using Computerized Neuropsychological Testing. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to quantify the associations between the neuropsychological measures and the DTCs in the spatio-temporal gait parameters. Moderate to strong correlations were found between the Auditory Continuous Performance test (ACPT) and the DTCs of the Single Support Time of Non-paretic (r=.37), the Trail Making A (TMA) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=.71), TMA test and the DTCs of the Step Length of Paretic (r=.37), TMA test and the DTCs of the Step Length Non-paretic (r=.36), the Trail Making B (TMB) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=.70), the Stroop Word-Color test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=-.40), Visual-span Backward (V-span B) test and the DTCs of Velocity (r=-.41), V-span B test and the DTCs of the Double Support Time of Non-paretic (r=.38), Digit-span Forward test and the DTCs of the Step Time of Non-paretic (r=-.39), and Digit-span Backward test and the DTCs of the Single Support Time of Paretic (r=.36). Especially TMA test and TMB test were found to be more strongly correlated to the DTCs of gait velocity than the other correlations. Understanding these cognitive features will provide guidance for identifying dual- task walking ability.

시공간 상관성을 이용한 적응적 움직임 추정 (Adaptive motion estimation based on spatio-temporal correlations)

  • Generally, moving images contain the various components in motions, which reange from a static object and background to a fast moving object. To extract the accurate motion parameters, we must consider the various motions. That requires a wide search egion in motion estimation. The wide search, however, causes a high computational complexity. If we have a few knowledge about the motion direction and magnitude before motion estimation, we can determine the search location and search window size using the already-known information about the motion. In this paper, we present a local adaptive motion estimation approach that predicts a block motion based on spatio-temporal neighborhood blocks and adaptively defines the search location and search window size. This paper presents a technique for reducing computational complexity, while having high accuracy in motion estimation. The proposed algorithm is introduced the forward and backward projection techniques. The search windeo size for a block is adaptively determined by previous motion vectors and prediction errors. Simulations show significant improvements in the qualities of the motion compensated images and in the reduction of the computational complexity.
