  • Characteristics and patterns of geographic features and human activities can be interpreted in terms of spatiality and temporality. The necessity to record the historical changes and the ability to reason in the real world has lead to a new field of research so called Integrated Spatio-Temporal analysis. The objective of this study is to investigate temporal maps for Spatio-temporal analysis, which have the integration functionality for visualizing spatiality and temporality of the geographic appearances and human activities. Land information is composed of spatial, attribute and temporal data and requires spatio-temporal representations. It is possible to visualize spatio-temporal variations with spatio-temporal databases and temporal map produced by integrated data models. This study constructs spatio-temporal model for temporal maps of land price variation analysis. Taking advantage of the spatio-temporal model proposed here, it is possible to visualize spatio-temporal variations with spatio-temporal database and temporal map. On a practical level, this study would be extended and utilized to various geographic features.

  • Farmland transaction prices are affected by various factors such as politics, society, and the economy. The purpose of this study is to identify multiple factors that affect the farmland transaction price due to changes in the actual transaction price of farmland by farmland unit from 2016 to 2020. There are several previous studies analyzed the determinants of farmland transaction prices by considering spatial dependency. However, in the case of land transactions where the time and space of the transaction affect simultaneously, if only spatial dependence is considered, there is a limitation in that it cannot reflect spatial dependence that occurs over time. In order to solve these limitations, To address these limitations, this study builds a spatio-temporal autoregressive model that simultaneously considers spatial and temporal dependencies using farmland transactions in Jinju City as an example. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that there was significant spatio-temporal dependence in farmland transactions within the previous 30 days. This means that if the previous farmland transaction was carried out at a high price, it has a spatio-temporal spillover effect that indirectly affects the increase in the price of other nearby farmland transactions. The study also found that various location attributes and socioeconomic attributes have a significant impact on farmland transaction prices. The spatio-temporal autoregressive model of farmland prices constructed in this study can be used to improve the prediction accuracy of farmland prices in the farmland transaction market in the future, and it is expected to be useful in drawing policy implications for stabilizing farmland prices

  • This study (1) explored spatio-temporal population distribution patterns in Jeonju by using emerging hot spot analysis and (2) identified the influential factors to determine the spatio-temporal patterns by using multinomial logit model. The major findings are as follows. First, the results of emerging hot spot analysis indicated that the 100*100m grid in the urban area of Jeonju was found to have a category of hot spots, whereas most of the cold spot series was concentrated in the outskirts of the city. Also, new towns such as Jeonju Eco City, Jeonbuk Innovation City, and Hyocheon District were persistent or intensifying hot spots, Third, the results of multinomial logit model revealed that the factors influencing deterrmining the spatio-temporal patterns were accessibility to schools, hospitals, parks, and walfare services. This study offered a deeper understanding of urbanization and regional changes in Jeonju, and important information for urban planning.

  • The spatio-temporal pattern in precipitation is a significant element in defining characteristics of precipitation. In this study, a new scheme on regionalization utilizing temporal information was introduced on the basis of existing approaches that is mainly based on simple moments of data and geographical information. Given the identified spatio-temporal pattern, this study was extended to characterize regional pattern of annual maximum rainfall over Korea. We have used circular statistics to characterize the temporal distribution on the precipitation, and the circular statistics allow us to effectively assess changes in timing of the extreme rainfall in detail. In this study, a modified K-means method was incorporated with derived temporal characteristics of extreme rainfall in order to better characterize hydrologic pattern for regional frequency analysis. The extreme rainfall was reasonably separated into five categories that considered most attributes in both quantitative and temporal changes in extremes. The results showed that the proposed approach is a promising approach for regionalization in term of physical understanding of extreme rainfall.

  • In this paper, we present an approach for detecting slide transitions in lecture videos by introducing the spatio-temporal residual networks. Given a lecture video which records the digital slides, the speaker, and the audience by multiple cameras, our goal is to find keyframes where slide content changes. Since temporal dependency among video frames is important for detecting slide changes, 3D Convolutional Networks has been regarded as an efficient approach to learn the spatio-temporal features in videos. However, 3D ConvNet will cost much training time and need lots of memory. Hence, we utilize ResNet to ease the training of network, which is easy to optimize. Consequently, we present a novel ConvNet architecture based on 3D ConvNet and ResNet for slide transition detection in lecture videos. Experimental results show that the proposed novel ConvNet architecture achieves the better accuracy than other slide progression detection approaches.

  • A spatial object changes its states over time. However, existing spatial and temporal database systems cannot fully manage time-varying data with both spatial and non-spatial attributes. To overcome this limitation, we present a framework for spatio-temporal databases that can manage all time-varying historical information and integrate spatial and temporal relationship operators into the select statement in SQL3. For the purpose of our framework, we define three referencing macros and a history aggregate operator and classify the existing spatial and temporal relationship operators into three groups: exclusively spatial relationship operators, exclusively temporal relationship operators, and spatio-temporal common relationship operators. Finally, we believe the integration of spatial and temporal relationship operators into SQL3 will provide a useful framework for the history management of time-varying spatial objects in a uniform manner.

  • We will catch the spatio-temporal changes that analyse the unknown topography of Go-Gunsan Islands using Landsat TM satellite images into an unsupervised ISODATA classification and a supervised nearest likelihood classification. Each sedimental topography has the different characteristics according to building the Saemangeum embarkment. We will deal with the distribution of sedimental shapes using ERDAS Imagine 8. 6. The result that classifies specifically topographic properties of our research area be considered to get use of establishing the reclaiming program and predicating the reclaimed sedimental topography. The research area can be classified into tidal flats and sea level using band 4 among 7 bands of Landsat TM. Also band 5 can be used to classify the special unknown shapes of tidal flats. We will clarify the efficiency that spatio-temporal sedimental changes can be extracted through processing satellite images. Therefore, the spatio-temporal unknown topography change monitoring using satellite images is expected to be very useful to clarify whether the tidal flat is generated or not in the Go-Gunsan Islands at the outer side of the embarkment after constructing completely the Saemangeum tidal embarkment.

  • Various techniques including histograms, sampling and parametric techniques have been proposed to estimate query result sizes for the query optimization. Histogram-based techniques are the most widely used form for the selectivity estimation in relational database systems. However, in the spatio-temporal databases for the moving objects, the continual changes of the data distribution suffer the direct utilization of the state of the art histogram techniques. Specifically for the future queries, we need another methodology that considers the updated information and keeps the accuracy of the result. In this paper we propose a novel approach based upon the duality and the marginal distribution to construct a histogram with very little time since the spatio-temporal histogram requires the data distribution defined by query predicates. We use data synopsis method in the dual space to construct spatio-temporal histograms. Our method is robust to changing data distributions during a certain period of time while the objects keep the linear movements. An additional feature of our approach supports the dynamic update incrementally and maintains the accuracy of the estimated result.

  • In order to understand the characteristics of natural droughts, it is very important to interpret the spatio-temporal relationship between different types of droughts. In this study, meteorological and hydrological drought events were defined to account for the overlap between drought duration and spatial extent in three dimensions (i.e., latitude, longitude, and timing). In other words, the spatio-temporal drought propagation characteristics were analyzed based on the drought characteristic factors (duration, area, depth, center). The drought map considering the characteristics of spatio-temporal drought propagation can be used to find the fundamental cause of the hydrological drought which is expected to frequently occur in the future. In addition, the drought map is expected to be useful in preparing an effective drought response plan.
