An Object-Level Feature Representation Model for the Multi-target Retrieval of Remote Sensing Images

  • To address the problem of multi-target retrieval (MTR) of remote sensing images, this study proposes a new object-level feature representation model. The model provides an enhanced application image representation that improves the efficiency of MTR. Generating the model in our scheme includes processes, such as object-oriented image segmentation, feature parameter calculation, and symbolic image database construction. The proposed model uses the spatial representation method of the extended nine-direction lower-triangular (9DLT) matrix to combine spatial relationships among objects, and organizes the image features according to MPEG-7 standards. A similarity metric method is proposed that improves the precision of similarity retrieval. Our method provides a trade-off strategy that supports flexible matching on the target features, or the spatial relationship between the query target and the image database. We implement this retrieval framework on a dataset of remote sensing images. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves competitive and high-retrieval precision.

JPEG-2000 Gradient-Based Coding: An Application To Object Detection

  • Image distortions, such as quantization errors, can have a severe negative impact on the performance of computer vision algorithms, and, more specifically, on object detection algorithms. State-of-the-art implementations of the JPEG-2000 image coder commonly allocate the available bits to minimize the Mean-Squared-Error (MSE) distortion between the original image and the resulting compressed image. However, considering that some state-of-the-art object detection methods use the gradient information as the main image feature, an improved object detection performance is expected for JPEG-2000 image coders that allocate the available bits to minimize the distortions on the gradient content. Accordingly, in this work, the Gradient Mean-Squared-Error (GMSE) based JPEG-2000 coder presents an improved object detection performance over the MSE based JPEG-2000 image coder when the object of interest is located at the same spatial location of the image regions with the strongest gradients and also for high bit-rates. For low bit-rates (e.g. 0.07bpp), the GMSE based JPEG-2000 image coder becomes overly selective in choosing the gradients to preserve, and, as a result, there is a greater chance of mismatch between the spatial locations of the gradients that the coder is trying to preserve and the spatial locations of the objects of interest.

  • We present a simple and efficient spatial object indexing scheme based on the minimum bounding rectangles (MBR) of the objects for use in applications in geographic information system (GIS). We also provide the rationale behind the simple indexing scheme instead of other complex hierarchical indexing approaches such as the R-tree and its variants.

  • An architectural framework is developed for integrating geospatial and temporal data with relational information from which a spatio-temporal data warehouse (STDW) system is built. In order to implement the STDW, a generic conceptual model was designed that accommodated six dimensions: spatial (map object), temporal (time), agent (contractor), management (e.g. planting) and tree species (specific species) that addressed the 'where', 'when', 'who', 'what', 'why' and 'how' (5W1H) of the STDW information, respectively. A formal algebraic notation was developed based on a triplet schema that corresponded with spatial, temporal, and relational data type objects. Spatial object structures and spatial operators (spatial selection, spatial projection, and spatial join) were defined and incorporated along with other database operators having interfaces via the generic model.

  • It is useful to simulate the human visual function for the purpose of image-processing. In this study, the hardware of the spatial filter with the sensitivity of lateral inhibition is realized by the combination of optical parts with electronic circuits. The diffused film with the characteristics of Gaussian type is prepared as a spatial filter. An object's image is convoluted with the spatial filter. From the difference of the convoluted images, the zero-cross position is detected at video rate. The edge of object is extracted in real-time by the use of this equipment. The resolution of edge changes with the value of the standard deviation of diffused film. In addition, it is possible to extract a directional edge selectively when the spatial filter with directional selectivity is used instead of Gaussian type of spatial filter.

  • Spatial database systems in client-server environment have network overload due to the large amount of spatial data transmission. Users use the window query that loads partial region of a whole map for quick response time in the environment. A series of window query such as screen movement, enlargement or shrinkage requires data in similar region and this increases network overload by re-transmitting the same data in intersected region with the earlier transmitted region. Removing the transmitted data from query results can solve this problem. In this paper, we design and implement a spatial object manager in order to remove the intersected region occurred by a series of window query. The spatial object manager manages the object identifiers of transmitted objects and removes transmitted objects from spatial objects of the query result by using the removal technique of the intersected region for the transmission and comparison. We utilize GEOMania Millennium server, an open client-server spatial database system, as spatial object manager in this paper. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the spatial object manager removes the transmission of the data redundancy, reduces network overload and improves the overall system performance.

  • This paper is proposed the wavelet morphology algorithm with the spatial auto-object segmentation concept and the clustering concept. When it is segmented the color face by using the proposed algorithm, it is made to the simple image. Also, it is used the spatial quality in order to segment and detect the image as a real time without the user's manufacturing. This removed a small part that is regarded as a noise in image by HSV color model and applied the wavelet morphology to remove a part excepting for the face image. In this paper, it is made a comparison between the wavelet morphology algorithm and the morphology algorithm. And It is showed to accurately detect the face object parts in the image appled to HSV color space model.

  • In this paper, we introduce visual contexts in terms of types and utilization methods for robust object recognition with intelligent mobile robots. One of the core technologies for intelligent robots is visual object recognition. Robust techniques are strongly required since there are many sources of visual variations such as geometric, photometric, and noise. For such requirements, we define spatial context, hierarchical context, and temporal context. According to object recognition domain, we can select such visual contexts. We also propose a unified framework which can utilize the whole contexts and validates it in real working environment. Finally, we also discuss the future research directions of object recognition technologies for intelligent robots.

  • Indoor localization is one of the basic elements of Location-Based Service, such as indoor navigation, location-based precision marketing, spatial recognition of robotics, augmented reality, and mixed reality. We propose a Voxel Labeling-based visual positioning system using object simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Our method is a method of determining a location through single image 3D cuboid object detection and object SLAM for indoor navigation, then mapping to create an indoor map, addressing it with voxels, and matching with a defined space. First, high-quality cuboids are created from sampling 2D bounding boxes and vanishing points for single image object detection. And after jointly optimizing the poses of cameras, objects, and points, it is a Visual Positioning System (VPS) through matching with the pose information of the object in the voxel database. Our method provided the spatial information needed to the user with improved location accuracy and direction estimation.

Effects of Object- and Space-Based Attention on Working Memory (대상- 및 공간-기반 주의가 작업기억에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of space- and object-based attention on spatial and visual working memory, by measuring recognition of working memory on the spatial Stroop task including two modalities of attention resource. The similarity condition of stimulus arrangement between working memory task and spatial stroop task was manipulated in order to examine the effects of space-based attention on spatial rehearsal during working memory task, while Stroop rendition was manipulated in order to examine the effects of object-based attention on object rehearsal during working memory task. The results showed that in a condition that stimulus arrangement was highly similar for the spatial working memory task and the spatial Stroop task, recognition accuracy of the spatial working memory was high, but it was not significantly different with the Stroop conditions. In contrast, the recognition accuracy of visual working memory in the incongruent Stroop condition was lower than that in the congruent Stroop condition, but it was not significantly different with the similarity conditions (25% vs. 75%). The results indicated that selective attention has effects on working memory only when resource modality of working memory is the same as that of selective attention.
