  • The concept of 'spatial association' explains spatial distribution pattern of geographical phenomenon based on similarity with neighborhoods, as in the Tobler's Law of Geography: 'Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things.' In this study, we develop a time-series exploratory analysis tool for discovering temporal patterns of spatial association by combining spatial statistics and geo-visualization, and thus present a possibility to support spatial decision-making process. As for the spatial proximity weight matrix indispensable to measuring global and local spatial association, we employ a variety of flexible weighting schemes using geometric characteristics of areal unit. In addition, we renovate the existing visualization methods for more effective understanding of the procedures and results of time-series analysis on spatial association: for instance, temporal parallel coordinate plot with box plot, animated map for spatial association, and 3D Moran scatterplot. The feasibility of our system is verified by time-series analysis experiments on the spatial association of land price fluctuation rate for all administrative units in Korea, $1995{\sim}2004$.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare calculated pollutant loadings using pollutant load unit factors and vector type coverage, and expected mean concentration(EMC) and raster type of digital elevation model(DEM). This study is also focusing on comparison of the advantages and the disadvantages of the two methods, and seeking for a method of calculation of pollutant loadings using DEM. Estimation of pollutant inputs using pollutant load unit factors has limitations in identifying seasonal variations of pollutant loadings. Seasonal changes of runoffs should be considered in the calculation of pollutant loadings from catchments into reservoirs. Evaluation of pollutant inputs using runoff-coefficient and EMC can overcome these drawbacks. Proper EMC and runoff-coefficient values for the Koeup stream catchments of the Koheung estuarine lake were drawn from review of related papers. Arc/Info was employed to establish database of spatial and attribute data of point and non-point pollutant sources and characteristics of the catchments. ArcView was used to calculate point and non-point pollutant loadings. Pollutant loads estimated with either unit factors-coverages, i.e., pollutant load unit factors and vector coverages f point sources and land use, or EMC and digital elevation mode(DEM) were compared with stream monitoring loads. We have found that some differences were shown between monitoring results and estimated loads by Unit Factors-Coverage and EMC-DEM. Monthly variations of pollutant loads evaluated with EMC-DEM were similar to those with monitoring result. The method using EMC-DEM can calculate accumulated flows and pollutant loads and can be utilized to identify stream networks. A future research on correcting the difference between vector type stream using flow direction grid and digitalizing vector type should be conducted in order to obtain more exact calculation of pollutant loadings.

  • A window presentation style, either tiled window or single page design, determines the spatial arrangement of information in a modern computer-based instructional design. This study investigates the interaction between spatial ability and window presentation style in terms of student's achievement of cognitive knowledge through Web-based instruction. Seventy-one students from the Falk School in Pennsylvania were pre-tested to determine their level of spatial ability, then randomly divided into two treatment groups in order to study a Web-based instructional unit on flowering plants. The Web-based instructional package was organized with either tiled window presentation or single page presentation. A posttest measured participants'acquisition of the instructional content. Posttest and spatial ability test scores were analyzed using multi-variate linear regression for the full sample (n=71) and three sub-samples: (a) 4th and 5th grade students only, (b) female students only, and (c) 4th and 5th grade female students only. The goals of the data analysis included the examination of (i) the correlation between spatial ability and posttest scores; (ii) the correlation between window presentation style and posttest score; and (iii) the interaction between spatial ability (aptitude) and presentation style (treatment). The data from all four sample groups showed a significant relationship between spatial ability and achievement of cognitive knowledge at the 1% level of significance. The aptitude-treatment interaction between spatial ability and style of window presentation was not significant in the full sample, but was significant in the sub-samples either at the 10% or 5% level. In neither the full sample nor any sub-sample data did window presentation style have an impact on average posttest score. In all analyses, the higher the level of spatial ability, the higher the posttest score. The sub-samples revealed that students with low spatial ability performed better with the tiled window presentation, while those with high spatial ability did better with the single page presentation. Neither window presentation style was shown to better foster learning by children of all levels of spatial ability.

  • In order to make sure the impact of spatial resolution of wind energy map on the estimation of wind power density in the Korean Peninsula, the comparison studies on the characteristics of wind energy map with three different spatial resolutions were carried out. Numerical model used in the establishment of wind map is MM5 (5th generation Mesoscale Model) with RBAPS (Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) as initial and boundary data. Analyzed Period are four months (March, August, October, and December), which are representative of four seasons. Since high spatial resolution of wind map make the undulation of topography be clear, wind pattern in high resolution wind map is correspond well with topography pattern and maximum value of wind speed is also increase. Indication of island and mountains in wind energy map depends on the its spatial resolution, so wind patterns in Heuksan island and Jiri mountains are clearly different in high and low resolutions. And area averaged power density can be changed by estimation method of wind speed for unit area in the numerical model and by treatment of air density. Therefore the studiable resolution for the topography should be evaluated and set before the estimation of wind resources in the Korean Peninsula.

  • Purpose: Signs that are installed at unnoticeable places or that disconnect before the destination can bring errors of location information delivery. Therefore, this study aims to find out the spatial relation between structure of space and signs in the perspective of visual exposure possibility, operating arrangement and assesment by applying spatial structure theory. Methods: Effectiveness of organization of guidance signs was evaluated after the four way-finding factors(Plan Configuration, Sign System, Perceptual Access, Architectural Difference) that G.D.Weisman suggested were interpreted by spatial structure theory(J-Graph analysis, Space Syntax, Visual Graph Analysis) under the premise that it is closely related to the structure of space. Results: 1) Because the south corridor that connects each department of outpatient division is located in the hierarchy center of the space, and walking density is expected to be high, guidance signs need to be organized at the place with high integration value. 2) The depth to the destination space can be estimated through J-Graph analysis. The depth means a switch of direction, and the guidance signs are needed according to the number. 3) According to visibility graph analysis, visual exposure can be different in the same hierarchy unit space according to the shape of the flat surface. Based on these data, location adjustment of signs is possible, and the improvement effect can be estimated quantitatively. Implications: Spatial structure theory can be utilized to design and evaluate sign systems, and it helps to clearly understand the improvement effect. It is desirable to specify design and estimation of sign systems in the order of J-Graph analysis${\rightarrow}$Space Syntax Theory${\rightarrow}$visibility graph analysis.

  • The production of near- and off-shore fisheries in South Korea is decreasing due to rapid changes in the fishing environment, particularly including higher sea temperature in recent years. To improve the competitiveness of the fisheries, it is necessary to provide fish catch information that changes spatiotemporally according to the sea state. In this study, artificial intelligence models that predict the CPUE (catch per unit effort) of mackerel, anchovies, and squid (Todarodes pacificus), which are three major fish species in the near- and off-shore areas of South Korea, on a 15-km grid and daily basis were developed. The models were trained and validated using the sea surface temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, pressure, sea surface wind velocity, significant wave height, and salinity as input data, and the fish catch statistics of Suhyup (National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives) as observed data. The 10-fold blind test results showed that the developed artificial intelligence models exhibited accuracy with a corresponding correlation coefficient of 0.86. It is expected that the fish catch models can be actually operated with high accuracy under various sea conditions if high-quality large-volume data are available.

  • Based on the importance of spatial thinking to understand celestial motion, this study aimed to investigate how spatial thinking was treated in astronomy classes. For this study, we analyzed four elementary teachers' science classes about the unit 'solar systems and stars' in 5th grade in terms of spatial thinking. The results showed that sharing perspectives and orientation explicitly between a teacher and students were important for students to understand celestial motion. Providing the earth-based and the space-based viewpoints simultaneously were helpful for students' understanding of celestial motion. Based on these results, this study suggested that clarifying the viewpoint and orientation, showing the earth-based and the space-based viewpoint simultaneously, and reorganizing the relative units of astronomy based on celestial motion and spatial thinking.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution and the linkage characteristics of the warehousing industry in Busan and to provide the policy implications for the warehousing industry in Korean port hinterland. We surveyed the warehousing firms in Busan. Categorizing the warehousing industry into industry types, sizes, and organization types on the basis of the survey, we attempted the point pattern analysis and the proximity analysis using the GIS. The warehousing industry in Busan had changed from a small single-unit firm to a medium or a large firm with a head office or branches. These were distributed in hinterland of North Harbor, South Harbor & Gamcheon Harbor, and Sin-Pyoung & Jang-Rim industrial complex and Sasang Industrial Complex constituting the spatial agglomeration. The warehousing industry in Busan formed the linkages with other sectors of the same logistics to provide manufacturing industries with various other services as well as storage services. The linkages were largely formed in the local scope with spatial proximity, generating the economic gains of agglomeration, which were transformed into the efficiency of the warehousing industry in the local scope to gradually expand the spatial dimensions of the linkages.

  • Graph databases, which store different types of data and their relationships modeled as a graph, can be effective in managing and analyzing real estate spatial data linked by complex relationships. However, they are not widely used due to the limited spatial functionalities of graph databases. In this study, we propose a uniform grid-based real estate spatial data management approach using a graph database to respond to various real estate-related spatial questions. By analyzing the real estate community to identify relevant data and utilizing national point numbers as unit grids, we construct a graph schema that linking diverse real estate data, and create a test database. After building a test database, we tested basic topological relationships and spatial functions using the Jackpine benchmark, and further conducted query tests based on various scenarios to verify the appropriateness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method successfully executed 25 out of 29 spatial topological relationships and spatial functions, and achieved about 97% accuracy for the 25 functions and 15 scenarios. The significance of this study lies in proposing an efficient data integration method that can respond to real estate-related spatial questions, considering the limited spatial operation capabilities of graph databases. However, there are limitations such as the creation of incorrect spatial topological relationships due to the use of grid-based indexes and inefficiency of queries due to list comparisons, which need to be improved in follow-up studies.
