  • Statistical trajectory analysis has been widely used to identify potential source regions for chemically and radiatively important chemical species in the atmosphere. The most widely used method is a statistical source-receptor model developed by Stohl (1996), of which the underlying principle is that elevated concentrations at an observation site are proportionally related to both the average concentrations on a specific grid cell where the observed air mass has been passing over and the residence time staying over that grid cell. Thus, the method can compute a residence-time-weighted mean concentration for each grid cell by superimposing the back trajectory domain on the grid matrix. The concentration on a grid cell could be used as a proxy for potential source strength of corresponding species. This technical note describes the statistical trajectory approach and introduces its application to estimate potential source regions of $CO_2$ enhancements observed at Korean Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory in Anmyeon-do. Back trajectories are calculated using HYSPLIT 4 model based on wind fields provided by NCEP GDAS. The identified $CO_2$ potential source regions responsible for the pollution events observed at Anmyeon-do in 2010 were mainly Beijing area and the Northern China where Haerbin, Shenyang and Changchun mega cities are located. This is consistent with bottom-up emission information. In spite of inherent uncertainties of this method in estimating sharp spatial gradients within the vicinity of the emission hot spots, this study suggests that the statistical trajectory analysis can be a useful tool for identifying anthropogenic potential source regions for major GHGs.

  • In this study, we evaluated daily root zone soil moisture dynamics and agricultural drought using a near-surface soil moisture data assimilation scheme with Soil Moisture Active & Passive (SMAP, $3km{\times}3km$) soil moisture footprints under different hydro-climate conditions. Satellite-based LANDSAT and MODIS image footprints were converted to spatially-distributed soil moisture estimates based on the regression model, and the converted soil moisture distributions were used for assessing uncertainties and applicability of SMAP data at fields. In order to overcome drawbacks of the discontinuity of SMAP data at the spatio-temporal scales, the data assimilation was applied to SMAP for estimating daily soil moisture dynamics at the spatial domain. Then, daily soil moisture values were used to estimate weekly agricultural drought based on the Soil Moisture Deficit Index (SMDI). The Yongdam-dam and Soyan river-dam watersheds were selected for validating our proposed approach. As a results, the MODIS/SMAP soil moisture values were relatively overestimated compared to those of the TDR-based measurements and LANDSAT data. When we applied the data assimilation scheme to SMAP, uncertainties were highly reduced compared to the TDR measurements. The estimated daily root zone soil moisture dynamics and agricultural drought from SMAP showed the variability at the sptio-temporal scales indicating that soil moisture values are influenced by not only the precipitation, but also the land surface characteristics. These findings can be useful for establishing efficient water management plans in hydrology and agricultural drought.

  • mST3GaIV synthesizes ganglioside GM3, the precursor for simple and complex a- and b- series gangliosides, and the expression and regulation of mST3GaIV (CMP-NeuAc: lactosylceramide $\alpha$2,3-sialyltransferase) activity is central to the production of almost all gangliosides, a class of glycosphingolipids implicated in variety of cellular processes such as transmembrane signaling, synaptic transmission, specialized membrane domain formation and cell-cell interactions. To understand the developmental expression of mST3GaIV in mice, we investigated the spatial and temporal expression of mST3GaIV mRNA during the mouse embryogenesis [embryonic (E) days; 19, E11, E13, E15] by in situ hybridization with digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes. All tissues from 19 and E11 were positive for mST3GaIV mRNA. On E13, mST3GaIV mRNA was expressed in various neural and non-neural tissues. In contrast to these, on E15, the telencephalon and liver produced a strong expression of mST3GaIV which was a quite similar to that of E13. In this stage, mST3GaIV mRNA was also expressed in some non-neural tissues. These data indicate that mST3GaIV is differently expressed at developmental stages of embryo, and this may be importantly related with regulation of organogenesis in mice.

  • This thesis deals a method to deliver more realistic sound by cancelling the cross-talk which is inherent to the 5.1 channel speaker system. The acoustical model for cross-talk cancellation is the free field model. This model minimizes distortion of sound. I used the bark scale sound quality compensation which based on psycho-acoustic. For the surround channels, band-limited sound quality compensation is performed in the frequency domain. I also performed the sound quality assessment test on the traditional 2 channel stereo and 5.1 channel system. This test is performed in the test chamber which satisfies the ITU-R specifications. I uses the IACC(Inter-Aural Cross-Correlation) to determine the preferences of the amateur and the golden ear experts to asses the trans-aural filter. According to the result from the proposed method, I got more the 38㏈ separation rates with the Dolby standard speaker array. The results on the diffusion by the subjective test with the experts shows 0.4 point increased then before.

  • The many DE based data hiding schemes and the many data hiding schemes based on Histogram shifting are researched in spatial domain. The data hiding scheme based on Histogram shifting have an advantage of low distortion of the stego image. But the capacity is low than other schemes. On the other hands, the DE based data hiding schemes have an advantage of high capacity. But the quality of the stego image is low. In this paper, new data hiding scheme which has the similar capacity but the increased quality of the stego image is proposed. The prediction error is divided into blocks to embed the secret data in this scheme. The prediction errors in the block are scanned before the secret data is embedded. If one prediction error is low than the threshold at least, the block is changed to embed the secret data. Otherwise the secret data is not embedded. The distortion of the stego image is minimized by this method. But the block that the secret data embedded is marked in location map. So the additional information to extract the secret data and recover the cover image is needed.

  • In this paper, we present a transcoding algorithm for converting an MPEG-2 video bitstream to an H.264 bitstream. The proposed transcoder consists of two parts. One is MPEG2 decoding part and the other is H.264 encoding part Because our algorithm is for transcoding in the spatial domain, MPEG2 decoding part carries out full decoding of MPEG2 bitstream. While, because macroblock type and coded block pattern in MPEG2 are significantly related to macroblock mode in H.264, macroblock mode is selected adaptively according to macroblock type and coded block pattern in H.264 decoding part. Furthermore, motion vector is also used as side-information for 16$\ctimes$16 macroblock mode. Simulation results show that the proposed transcoder yields high reduction of total transcoding time at comparable PSNR.

  • FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors and optical fibers were embedded into CFRP dry preforms before resin impregnation in VaRTM (Vacuum-assisted Resin Transfer Molding). The embedding location was the interface between the skin and the stringer in a CFRP-stiffened panel. The reflection spectra of the FBG sensors monitored the strain and temperature changes during all the molding processes. The internal residual strains of the CFRP panel could be evaluated during both the curing time and the post-curing time. The temperature changes indicated the differences between the dry preform and the outside of the vacuum bagging. After the molding, four-point bending was applied to the panel for the verification of its structural integrity and the sensor capabilities. The optical fibers were then used for the newly-developed PPP-BOTDA (Pulse-PrePump Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) system. The long-range distributed strain and temperature can be measured by this system, whose spatial resolution is 100 mm. The strain changes from the FBGs and the PPP-BOTDA agreed well with those from the conventional strain gages and FE analysis in the CFRP panel. Therefore, the fiber-optic sensors and its system were very effective for the evaluation of the VaRTM composite structures.

  • This thesis deals with a method to deliver more realistic sound by cancelling the cross-talk which is inherent to the 5.1 channel speaker system. First, the cross-talk cancellation method that eliminates cross-talks on the path from left speaker to right ear and from right speaker to left ear is explained. Then the application and replaying method using the cross-talk cancellation explained here is introduced. The acoustical model for cross-talk cancellation is the free field model This model minimizes distortion of sound. Many experts also make studies on this model. I used the bark scale sound quality compensation based on psycho-acoustic. For the surround channels, band-limited sound quality compensation is performed in the frequency domain.

  • In this paper, a reliability-based design optimization is developed for the topology design of linear structures using a performance measure approach. Spatial domain is discretized using three dimensional Reissner-Mindlin plate elements and design variable is taken as the material property of each element. A continuum based adjoint variable method is employed for the efficient computation of sensitivity with respect to the design and random variables. The performance measure approach of RBDO is employed to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. The topology optimizationproblem is formulated to have probabilistic displacement constraints. The uncertainties such as material property and external loads are considered. Numerical examples show that the developed topology optimization method could effectively yield a reliable design, comparing with the other methods such as deterministic, safety factor, and worst case approaches.

  • We have numerically solved rate-equations of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) to understand the characteristics of SOA. The rate-equations we have used can describe injection carrier density, amplified spontaneous emission and signal photon density in spatial and time domain by dividing the cavity into multi-section. We have investigated injection carrier density, amplified spontaneous emission and signal photon density as a function of position and time in the case of single channel input in the form of square pulse. Also we have analyzed the non-linear phenomena of SOA in the case of injecting multi-channel wavelengths as in WDM. Intermodulation distortion (IMD) caused by beat among channels has significant effects on the signal distortion as the channel spacing becomes narrower, and channel crosstalk becomes larger as the power of signals increases. In the case of the injection of another CW laser whose wavelength is far enough from the signal wavelengths, the crosstalk and the output signal distortion can be significantly reduced. duced.
