Young Children's Ability to Use Spatial Coordinates and to Represent Spatial Locations (유아의 좌표지각능력과 위치표상능력과의 관계 연구)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate whether there were differences in the young children's abilities to use spatial coordinates and to represent spatial locations by children's age and sex, and to examine the relationship between these two abilities. It also explored whether the young children could use coordinates as the frames of reference for representing spatial locations. Seventy 5- and 6-year-old children from two kindergartens in Seoul and in Bucheon participated in this study. Results indicated that there were statistically significant differences between age groups on the children's ability to use spatial coordinates and to represent spatial locations. However, there were no significant differences between boys and girls on these two abilities. A positive correlation was found between theses two abilities of using spatial coordinates and representing spatial locations. Most of the young children used landmarks as the frames of reference to represent spatial locations while some of the children were partially able to use spatial coordinates. Twenty percent of 6-year-old children were fully able to use spatial coordinates as the frames of reference to represent spatial locations.

A Study on the Relation among Mathematical - Spatial - Verbal Abilities and Gender Differences of Engineering Students (공과대학생들의 수리 - 공간 - 언어 능력 사이의 관계 및 성별 차이에 관한 연구)

  • Mathematical, spatial, and verbal abilities are important for future engineers to succeed in the STEM disciplines. The purpose of the study is to assess engineering students' spatial abilities and analyse the relationship with mathematical achievement, verbal achievement, and gender. On the mental rotation tests, 65% of male students demonstrated a substantial level of spatial abilities. But only 30% of female students exhibited spatial skills at the same level as their male colleagues. The correlations between mathematical - spatial - verbal abilities are found to be negligible. When spatial visualization ability was plotted according to the mathematical achievement level, there was no difference in the mean spatial abilities score. But when mathematical achievement score was plotted according to the spatial abilities, there was a noticeable difference. Regression analysis confirmed that female students' mathematical achievement increased as spatial abilities improved. This phenomenon was not observed for male students. It's because male students' spatial ability already contributed to their mathematics achievement. So spatial ability can be regarded as one factor for the gender differences in mathematics achievement. The gender gap on spatial abilities and math achievement is large among high achieving students. For example, there was a 4.3 to 1 male - female ratio and 3.4 to 1 male - female ratio among students scoring 99th percentile in spatial visualization test and scholastic aptitude test-math.

Effects of spatial variability of earthquake ground motion in cable-stayed bridges

  • Most codes of practice state that for large in-plane structures it is necessary to account for the spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. There are essentially three effects that contribute for this variation: (i) wave passage effect, due to finite propagation velocity; (ii) incoherence effect, due to differences in superposition of waves; and (iii) the local site amplification due to spatial variation in geological conditions. This paper discusses the procedures to be undertaken in the time domain analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. The artificial synthesis of correlated displacements series that simulate the earthquake load is discussed first. Next, it is described the 3D model of the International Guadiana Bridge used for running tests with seismic analysis. A comparison of the effects produced by seismic waves with different apparent propagation velocities and different geological conditions is undertaken. The results in this study show that the differences between the analysis with and without spatial variability of earthquake ground motion can be important for some displacements and internal forces, especially those influenced by symmetric modes.

An Analysis of Spatial Differences in the Efficiency of Regional Industrial Enterprises in China

  • This paper analysis of spatial differences in the efficiency of regional industrial enterprises in China from 2011 to 2021. The efficiency analysis uses the DEA-CCR model. The input variables for efficiency analysis are total assets and annual average employees, and the output variables are revenue from principal business and total profits. Using trend surface analysis and gravity center model, to analysis the spatial differences of efficiency in different regions. From the results of the gravity center model, the coordinates of the gravity center of China's regional industrial enterprise efficiency in 2011 are 112.303°E & 34.239°N, and 2021 are 111.753°E & 33.791°N, which indicates that the gravity center of the efficiency of China's regional industrial enterprises in the 2011-2021 period generally moves to the southwest. From the results of the trend surface analysis, the efficiency of industrial enterprises in China's regional industrial enterprises appears to show spatial differences in both the eastwest and the northsouth directions.

Sex Differences in Episodic Memory and Spatial Cognition in Healthy Younger Adults (젊은 성인의 성별에 따른 일화기억과 공간인지의 차이)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the sex differences in episodic memory and spatial cognition in healthy young adults. Methods : Forty-eight undergraduates (male=24, female=24) were assessed for sex differences using the visual stimuli episodic memory task and the virtual reality-based spatial cognition task. The accuracy rates (%) for the What, Where, and When conditions of the episodic memory task and the average distance error (cm) for 10 trials of the spatial cognition task were analyzed. Results : There were no significant sex differences between the three conditions. The male participants showed a significantly higher performance on the spatial cognition task than the female participants Conclusion : The results of this study indicated that the sex differences in episodic memory could be altered by the test methods. Although episodic memory and spatial cognition mainly depend on the hippocampus, the sex-related differences between the two functions were inconsistent, suggesting that these two functions are independent.

Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Zooplankton in Gwangyang and Sachon Bay, Korea

  • Zooplankton dynamics were investigated based on samples collected monthly during the period between November 1998 and October 1999 at 15 stations in Gwangyang and Sachon Bay. Zooplankters were quantitatively collected with horizontal towing through the surface and oblique hauling from the bottom to surface at each station, simultaneously. A total of 88 taxa of zooplankton were distributed and 60 taxa were identified to species. Copepods showed the prosperity in species number of 52 species. Number of taxa occurred in samples hauled obliquely always showed $2\~5$ more species than those captured in the surface except for stations near the Namhae bridge. In waters near Namhae bridge, fast current seemed to mix waters vertically. Seasonally these differences were more distinct in the spring and summer than those in other seasons possibly due to the stratification in warmer seasons. In quantitative aspects, differences between two layers seemed to be obscure. Spatial and temporal variations in species diversity of copepods showed more prosperity in pelagic realm than those in the surface. Our collection carrying out in day time might be one of the important reason to cause these differences in zooplankton dynamics between two layers.

A Study on Changes and Differences in Spatial Configuration of the Urban Sub-Area Development - In the Case of Uijeongbu City (도시성장에 따른 공간구조의 변화에 관한 연구 -의정부시의 사례를 중심으로)

  • Transformations of the urban spatial structure, from sub-area redevelopment to newtown development, results great influences upon existing urban condition and spatial configuration. The purpose of the study is to analyse the effect of the urban spatial configuration of Uijongbu city where experienced changes after newly development of city center and new residential area. The west part of the city where is limited in growth by military bases, ego U.S Army basecamp, were planned and established as the other axis of the city center since mid 1980's. After that new residential area which is located in far east of the city were also developed. Space syntax as a methodology has been adopted to conduct quantitative analysis which is able to interpret differences between sub-areas ; old city center, new city center, new residential area. The results of the analysis are follows ; 1) existing structure of the urban fabric, especially old city center, is sustained and intensified, 2) new city center which is west part of the city has failed to achieve organic spatial connection adjacent to old city center, 3) there is less spatial depecdency relationship between city center and new residential area where is identified as another small self-support city within the city.

Individual Differences in Regional Gray Matter Volumes According to the Cognitive Style of Young Adults

  • Extant research has proposed that the Object-Spatial-Verbal cognitive style can elucidate individual differences in the preference for modality-specific information. However, no studies have yet ascertained whether this type of information processing evinces structural correlations in the brain. Therefore, the current study used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analyses to investigate individual differences in gray matter volumes based on the Object-Spatial-Verbal cognitive style. For this purpose, ninety healthy young adults were recruited to participate in the study. They were administered the Korean version of the Object-Spatial-Verbal cognitive style questionnaire, and their anatomical brain images were scanned. The VBM results demonstrated that the participants' verbal scores were positively correlated with regional gray matter volumes (rGMVs) in the right superior temporal sulcus/superior temporal gyrus, the bilateral parahippocampal gyrus/fusiform gyrus, and the left inferior temporal gyrus. In addition, the rGMVs in these regions were negatively correlated with the relative spatial preference scores obtained by individual participants. The findings of the investigation provide anatomical evidence that the verbal cognitive style could be decidedly relevant to higher-level language processing, but not to basic language processing.

A Study on the PN-Spatial Characteristics of Japanese Contemporary Architecture - Focused on the Projects of Four Contemporary Young Architects - (일본 현대 건축의 PN-space적 특징에 관한 연구 - 동시대의 신진 건축가 4인의 작품을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze common features and methodological differences of PN-spatial characteristics found in architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan, such as Sou Fujimoto, Yo shimada, Keisuke Maeda and Junya Ishigami. These architects have paid attention to space between nature and inner space and have tried to establish their own architectural theory on that. Such space is ambiguous and PN-spatial in a way that it has features of both nature and inner space. Ambiguousness is a characteristic of modern architecture and PN-spatial characteristics are one of the features of Japanese architecture. This study aims to analyze the architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan from the perspective of PN-space and to draw methodological differences and common features. Their theories and works have common features in terms of 'ambiguous spatial boundary', 'unregulated spatial territory', 'detoured circulation' and 'architectural motifs', but each has their own methodology. To sum up, the works and theories of the Japanese young architects contain the philosophy and discourse of modern architecture in general. To be sure, they clearly have characteristics of Japanese architecture, which needs to be studied constantly.
