  • By combining the role of current GIS technology and design behaviors from the cognitive perspective, spatial conceptualization can be extended efficiently and creatively for ill-structured problems. This study elaborates the model of a conceptualization-oriented SDSS(Spatial Decision Support System) for a landscape design problem. Current information-oriented GIS technology plays a minor role in planning and design. The three attributes in planning and design problems describe how the deficiencies of current GIS technology can be seen as a failure of the technology. These are summarized: (1) Information Explosion/Information Ignorance (2) Dilemma of Rigor and Relevance (3) Ill-structured Nature of planning and Design. In order to implement the conceptualization idea in the current GIS environment, it will be necessary to shift from traditional, information-oriented GISs to conceptualization-oriented SDSSs. The conceptualization-oriented SDSS model reflects the key elements of six important theories and techniques. The six useful theories and techniques are as follows; (1) Human Information Processing (2) Tool/Theory Interaction (3) The Sciences of the Artificial and Epistemology of Practice (4) Decision Support Systems (DSSs) (5) Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (6) Creative Thinking. The future conceptualization-oriented SDSS can provide capabilities for planners and designers to figure out some "hidden organizations" in spatial planning and design, and develop new ideas through its conceptualization capability. The facilitation of conceptualization has been demonstrated by presenting three key ideas for the framework of the SDSS model: (1) bubble-oriented design support system (2) prototypes as an extension of semantic memory, and (3) scripts as an extension of episodic memory in a cognitive pschology perspective. The three ideas can provide a direction for the future GIS technology in planning and design.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine how the present use of Geographic Information Systems (GISs) can be improved for ill-structured problems in planning and design, While information-oriented GIS technology has proven useful for routine and administrative problems, it is not yet capable of providing information and knowledge interactively within a problem solving process that can be characterized as "ill-structured." This suggests that GIS technology must be embedded wi thin a large problem solving process for ill-structured problems. The hypothesis of this research is that implementation of conceptualization-oriented Spatial Decision Support Systems(SDSSs) will significantly improve the use of GIS technology for ill-structured problems.

  • Criticizing the existing social science approaches to transnational migration for their ignorance of spatial perspectives and the resultant limits in the understanding of the concrete processes of international migration and settlement, this paper aims to examine how spatial perspectives and geographical epistemology can positively contribute to the understanding and conceptualization of transnational migration. In particular, it emphasizes that the processes of transnational migration cannot be solely understood in terms of 1) global capitalist restructuring and economic rationality, 2) the impacts of deterritoralized transnational networks, or 3) the operation of immigration regimes constructed at the national scale. Alternatively, this paper argues that the conceptualization of 'transnational space', which is based on the understanding of the socio-spatial dimensions - that is, place, territory, scale and networks - that affect the processes of transnational migration, could significantly contribute to the understanding of the transnational migration.

  • Interactive space became one of the modern contemporary society design paradigms. For elevating the interactive effect, we need Interactive design development which uses the influential factors on the interactivity. Digital technology is resulted in a change to a society as well as to the life of human and its way of communication. This study is inquiry into the relations and the common characteristics between ecological architecture space and eco-centric environmental philosophy by making a comparative research. This aims to examine type of spatial contexts for performed through literature research for theory by interactive space and case studies for ecological construction elements to design. And the range of case study is limited to interaction space in addition of interactive elements and user interface. And analysis conclusion is show the many type. Five principles that draw at ecological design conceptualization process, whole unity, variety of organic at ecological design conceptualization process, circularity, homeostasis, allness, biological evolution, diversity have involved with concept that presents in ecological esthetics and organic property of ecology-system.

  • Contemporary workspace is configured in various manners according to working patterns, collaborative or independent nature of works, group-wise working styles and culture, the size of the group, and so on. On the other hand, conventional office space has tended to be a monolithic single space packed with various types of works. This change reflects what has happened to the meanings and structures of office space. The ubiquitous computing technique is being applied to the development of the intelligent office as it grows. This leads to the change of intelligent office technology which provides user-oriented spatial service. This paper focuses on the conceptualization and design of service scenarios or the intelligent office based on the user-oriented spatial service paradigm.

  • In Korea, even though many aspects of medical care system for the elderly have been considered. Until now, most people have realized that the conceptualization range of geriatric hospital is the same as recuperation hospital. However the recent geriatric hospital includes a short term treatment like general hospitals, together with that it has a tendency to increase the propotion of rehabilitationby the Introduction of the concept of active rehabilitation treatment for returning to society. Unlike the general hospitals, geriatric hospital has got different characteristics in a managing and patient. However this is not a concrete standard of faacilities by the law of health welfare and medical. So these kinds of research will have to keep continuing. What I want to say In this study is that the prominence of information, which is based on the existing data analysis, is what forms my latest projects that engage with a wider repertoire of strategies and approaches toward architectural problem.

  • It is essential to consider strategies, spatial planning, and reflection of sustainability for the creation of sound urban spaces. To this end, there is a need for plans that can secure better sustainability through strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of plans. This study examined the literature and available precedent to develop a SEA model for administrative plans for urban development including metropolitan plans, urban master plans and urban management plans. In the course of development of the model, environmental issues associated with the urban plans were analyzed by classifying them into ten categories, including "spatial planning," "conservation planning," "greenbelt systems," "habitats." and etc. according to their rank. Furthermore, those issues were reflected on the development of environmental evaluation indices for the plans. Overall and detailed environmental indices that can be applied to the administrative plans for urban development including metropolitan plans, urban master plans and urban management plans were devised for five stages: (1) Establishment of development goals and strategy, (2) Analysis of current status and characteristics, (3) Conceptualization of spatial structure, (4) Planning for each department, and (5) Execution and management. Sub plans are more detailed and concrete. Criteria based on the evaluation indices, when performing evaluations on plans based on each environmental assessment index in reference to experts and the literature, were used to forecast their effects, i.e. whether they had a positive, negative, or no effect or relationship, or whether their effects was uncertain. Based on the forecasts, this study then presents means to establish more improvable plans. Furthermore, by synthesis of the effects according to each index and integration of the process, plans were analyzed overall. This study reflects the characteristics of the present time period based on issues in the SEA process and techniques in upper level administrative plans being newly established, and presents them according to the stage of each plan. Furthermore, by forecasting the effect of plans by stage, this study presents proposals for improvement, and in this aspect, can be meaningful in promoting plan improvements through SEA.

  • The paper attempts to balance the discourses of transnational spaces that have focused on de-territorialization, by emphasizing that transnational spaces are maintained also through re-territorialization. Reviewing the literature of transnational social fields, translocality, multicultural spaces and transnational places, I aim to show the way the main issues from the literature help understand an actually existing transnational space, Little Mania in Daehangno, Seoul. I specifically address the dialectic relation between de-territorialization and re-territorialization, multi-scalar networks, and hybridity of multicultural spaces in interpreting the weekend enclave of Filipinos in Seoul. I argues that Little Manila is a grounded translocality operating through multi-scaled networks of various actors. Furthermore, it is not a unified space where one dominant Filipino identity stands out. Different Filipinos and Filipinas constitute the space imagining different homes. It is also a multicultural space open to other minorities, which suggests the possibility of alternative spatial politics based on co-presence of different 'Others'.

  • To better publish geographical information on the Web, it is important to capture how Web technologies are changing. For a recent decade, Semantic Web has been developed by incorporating ontologies into the current Web, with an aim to make computers understand rather than simply display. Ontology, an explicit specification of a conceptualization, and the Semantic Web grounded on the ontology, have the potential for effective sharing and appropriate retrieval of geographical information. This paper describes a Semantic Web Service over the mobile Web that can offer pertinent tourism information according to user contexts. To do this, a tourism ontology was formalized in the PARA(Place-Attraction-Resource-Activity) ontology model by organizing tourist places, tourist attractions, tourism resources, and activities. Locational relationships between tourist places were also included in the PARA ontology model to take into account the movements of tourists on a railway network. The XML(Extensible Markup Language) Web Service in the middle tier manages the client-side request for information retrieval and the corresponding server-side response from the data provider. The PARA ontology was integrated into the XML Web Service for the concept-based discovery of tourism information. The applicability of the proposed system was tested through a simulation experiment for Tokyo tourism.

  • This study attempts at prototyping and evaluating a geovisualization tool that summarizes and explores human activity patterns using spatio-temporal trajectory data collected from GPS receiver. A set of core conceptualization developed in 'time geography' is successfully represented by our prototype based on the notion of 'space-time cube.' The notions of 'temporal dispersion cylinder' and 'parallel plane plot' are also implemented to allow funker analyses of human activity pattern on the space-time trajectory. The capabilities of the geovisualization environment we proposed include the interactive and dynamic functions that support a variety of explorations on the three components of spatio-temporal data : space(where), time(when), and object(what).
