A study of the performance effect of Indolene-Methanol Plus High Alcolhols (MPHA) has been completed. The study invested the measurement of performance parameters. The performance parameters measured are minimum advance for best torque (MBT) spark timing, power output and thermal efficiency. The alcohol concentration was varied from 0 to 100 percent by volume in clear Indolene. The performance parameters were measured using a single cylinder spark ignition engine at different compression ratios. The results of the performance measurements indicated that Indolene-MPHA blends have a higher MBT spark advance, similar power output and lower thermal efficiencies than Indolene-Methanol blends.

To theoretically predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine as a function of engine design and operating parameters, transient local temperature and pressure, mixture density of flame front in combustion period are calculated. We next determined normal combustion period and auto ignition period of end gas using the prediction method on occurrence of spark knock which we suggested. We predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine by comparing consecutively normal combustion period with the auto ignition period of end gas in combustion period. Engine design and operating parameters such as compression ratio, engine speed, spark timing, inlet temperature and pressure are taken into account in this calculations. The predicted result are well matched with the experimental results in turbocharged engine. Therefore, this method will provide the systematic guideline for designing engines in view of knocking limits.
Cycle-to-cycle variation has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. At a part load, some of the cycles tend to knock, while others may have incomplete combustion by the time the exhaust valve opens. An experimental study has been performed in order to evaluate the relative contribution of several relevant parameters on the cyclic variability in spark ignition engines. In general, the stability of engine operation is improved with fuel injector according to the optimal injection timing, but the stability of engine operation at idle is not improved compared with a practical gasoline engine. In this study, we investigated the relationship of the effect of operating conditions for the stability at low speed and load.

Environmental concerns and shortage of petroleum have promoted considerable interest in the use of alternate fuels in stationary diesel engine. In this study, a heavy-duty, intercooler-turbocharged 6-cylinder stationary diesel engine was converted into stationary gas engine fueled with propane or natural gas for the cogeneration plants. One of the most important factors in the combustion features of a stationary gas engine is the fuel composition and operating parameters in terms of compression ratio, spark advance, and engine loads. Experiments with different fuel gas and load conditions were carried out with combustion pressure analysis and NOx measurement. Combustion analysis based on P-$\theta$ diagrams was also investigated by means of combustion duration and cycle variation. Compression ratio is 10.0 and ignition timing is set by using the gasoline setting as a base line and advanced toward BTDC. The results show that fuel composition and spark advance have dominant effects on combustion and NOx characteristics at operating conditions.

Cyclic variability has long been recognized as limiting the range of operating conditions of spark ignition engines, in particular, under lean and highly diluted operation conditions. The cyclic combustion variations can be characterized by the pressure parameters, combustion parameters, and flame front parameters. The coefficient of variation in indicated mean effective pressure ($COV_{IMEP}$) defines the cyclic variability in indicated work per cycle, and it has been found that vehicle driveability problems usually result when $COV_{IMEP}$ exceeds about 10%. For analysis of the cyclic variability in SI engines at idling, the results show that cyclic variability by the $COV_{IMEP}$ or the coefficient of variation in maximum pressure can be explained and may be consequently reduced by the help of the optimum spark timings.
A study of the propeny and performance effect of Indolene - Methanol Plus High Alcolhols (MPHA) has been completed. This study invested the measurement of fuel properties and performance parameters. The fuel properties investigated are distillation characteristics, heating valuer flash point, specific gravity and water tolerance. The performance parameters measured are minimum advance for best torque (MBT) spark timing, power output. The alcohol concentration was varied from 0 to 100 percent by volume in clear Indolene. The measurement of fuel properties indicated that, in general, Indolene - MPHA blends have higher water tolerance, similar specific gravity, similar flash point and different distillation characteristics compared to Indolene - Methanol blends. The performance parameters were measured using a single cylinder spark ignition engine at different compression ratios. The results of the performance measurements indicated that Indolene - MPHA blends have a higher MBT spark advance, similar power output.

Combustion and performance of a spark-ignition engine fueled with propane and butane were analyzed under different compression ratio. The electricity efficiencies of propane and butane increased with increasing the electricity production. The heat release rates of propane and butane were similar at a compression ratio of 9:1 because both fuels had similar optimal ignition timings without knocking combustion. Therefore, the difference in electricity efficiencies of engine generators was insignificant. However, at a higher compression ratio of 11:1, the butane engine generator had a lower electricity efficiency than the propane engine generator because its ignition timing retarded to suppress the knocking combustion.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of the injection timing on the spray and combustion characteristics in a spray-guided direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine under lean stratified operation. An in-cylinder pressure analysis, exhaust emissions measurement, and visualization of the spray and combustion were employed in this study. The combustion in a stratified DISI engine was found to have both lean premixed and diffusion controlled flame combustion characteristics. The injection timing condition corresponding to the stratified mixture characteristics was verified to be a dominant factor for these flame characteristics. For the early injection timing, a non-luminous blue flame and low combustion efficiency were observed as a result of the lean homogeneous mixture formation. On the other hand, a luminous sooting flame was shown at the late injection timing because of an under-mixed mixture formation. In addition, the smoke emission and incomplete combustion products were increased at the late injection timing as a result of the increased locally rich area. On the other hand, the NOx emissions decreased and IMEP increased as the injection timing retarded. The combustion phasing produced by the injection timing was verified as the reason for this observation.

Due to the development of the industrial revolution, regulations on exhaust emissions have been continuously strengthened to reduce the rapidly increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The use of environmentally friendly fuels is essential to meet these regulations. Hydrogen has been attracting attention as a future environmentally friendly fuel, but due to its material properties, it faces significant challenges in handling and storage. As an alternative, ammonia has been proposed. Ammonia can be easily liquefied at room temperature compared to hydrogen and has a high energy density. In order to examine the applicability of ammonia as an engine fuel, experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of changes in combustion control parameters in a direct injection ammonia combustion engine. The experiments were conducted by varying two variables: spark timing and excessive air ratio. Observations were made on combustion stability and the trends of exhaust emissions such as nitrogen oxides and unburned ammonia under the conditions of an engine speed of 1,500 rpm and medium to high loads (brake torque of 200 Nm). By optimizing the combustion control parameters, conditions for stable combustion even when using ammonia as the sole fuel were identified, and plans are underway to apply strategies for future expansion of the operating range.

In this paper, we investigated the improvement of characteristics of knock, emission and fuel consumption rate by optimizing the location and size of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket without change of engine water jacket design itself. The cooling system was modified in the direction of reducing the metal temperature in the head and increasing the metal temperature in the block. The optimization of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket was obtained by "flow visualization test". The water transfer holes were concentrated in front side of the engine in order to reduce thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of No. 2 and No. 3 combustion changer in the cylinder head, which would have a large knock intensity, and increase thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of the cylinder block. When the modified coolant flow pattern was applied as proposed in this paper, the knock characteristic was improved. The spark timing was advanced up to 2$^{\circ}$ in low and middle speed range at a full load. In addition, HC emission at MBT was reduced by 5.2%, and the fuel consumption rate was decreased up to 1% in the driving condition of 2400 rpm and 250 KPa. However, since this coolant flow pattern mentioned in this paper might deteriorate the performance of vehicle cooling system due to the coolant flow rate reduction, a properly optimized point should be obtained. obtained.
