In late 1960's, engineers of the engine manufacturer experienced that the distortion of inlet flow of turbofan and turbojet engine could cause the surge in compressor and affect overall engine operational performance, which result in the deterioration of stability of the engine. In this study, block type of inlet distortion simulating device has been developed in order to investigate the effect of inlet distortion on the deterioration of overall engine operational performance. The inlet distortion simulating device was installed in front of engine inlet in order to simulate distortion of inlet flow. The degree of inlet distortion was measured by rakes installed upstream the inlet distortion simulating device and between the engine inlet and inlet distortion simulating device. Before applying the inlet distortion simulating device to real engine, preliminary tests were performed with a simulated engine in order to verify the degree of inlet distortion by the device. Preliminary inlet distortion tests were performed in Altitude Engine Test Facility(AETF) of Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) and results showed that the inlet distortion simulating device could be used in simulating various inlet distortion cases.

An air-independent propulsion (AIP) system based on fuel cell technologies was developed for space and underwater applications in the present study. Hydrogen peroxide was selected as an oxidizer for space and underwater power applications where air independence is a must. Catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was used to generate oxygen and water. The pure oxygen was provided to a fuel cell and the water was stored separately. Sodium borohydride in the solid state was used as a hydrogen source in the present study. Pure hydrogen can be generated by a catalytic hydrolysis reaction. A fuel cell system was fabricated to validate the fuel cell based air-independent power system and was evaluated at the various conditions.

The main propulsion system may be the most complicated of the shipboard systems. Many factors such as fuel economy, weight, space, first cost, reliability, vibration and noise must be considered when selecting the prime mover of the main propulsion system for ships. An expert system is a computer program that represents and reasons with knowledge of some specialist subject with a view to solving problems or giving advice. Recently, it is being developed increasingly with wider applications in many industries. This paper describes development of knowledge-based system for main engine selection of ships using general purpose expert system development tool, Nexpert Object. Developed system is consist of ship performance estimation module such as resistance and propulsion, data base for main engine, knowledge base for main engine selection in Nexpert Object and graphic user interface.
From the previous researches about flow characteristic of micro-nozzle, we found that viscosity and back pressure induced heavy losses in micro nozzle. To overcome thess losses, we began to study new conceptual micro propulsion system that is thermal transpiration based micro propulsion system. It has no moving parts and can pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only (cold to hot). Most of previous research on thermal transpiration is in its early stage and mainly studied for application to small vacuum facility or gas chromatography in ambient condition using nanoporous material like aerogel. In this study, we focus on basic research of propulsion system based on thermal transpiration using polyimide material in vacuum conditions.

A modeling and power simulation of a small UAV's electric propulsion systems is described. Each power source is modeled and simulated in Matlab/Simulink and it is compared flight test data during 4 hr 30 min with simulation results about 200 W electric propulsion system using fuel cell and battery as a main power sources. In result, it is properly simulated performance and dynamic characteristic of each electric power source. Through this, it is revealed that the simulation is available as a means of predicting power characteristic variation for electric propulsion systems of different class.

Propeller aircraft propelled by an electric propulsion system is gaining a renewed interest because of ever-increasing environmental concern on harmful emissions emitted from conventional jet engines and national energy security. Traditional aircraft sizing methods are not readily applicable to electric propulsion aircraft that utilize a variety of alternative energy sources and power generation systems. This study showcases an electric propulsion aircraft sizing exercise based on a generalized, power based sizing method. A general aviation aircraft is propelled by an electric propulsion system that comprises of a propeller, a high temperature super conducting motor, a Proton Exchange Membrance(PEM) fuel cell system fuelled with hydrogen, and power conditioning equipment. In order to assess the impact of technology progression, aircraft sizing was conducted for two different sets of technology assumptions for electric components, and the results were compared with conventional baseline aircraft.
Propellant consumption control for space launch vehicle can be achieved by propellant utilization system (PUS) and tank depletion system (TDS). In the course of developing new space launch vehicles, the main target of design is on reducing of space launch vehicle weight, which results in increasing both specific impulse and payload weight. The weights of space launch vehicles are generally allocated to structure, propulsion system, and propellants loaded. The quantity of propellants filled in propellant tanks may be estimated with the propellants actually consumed by propulsion system to complete its mission and the propellants left on-board at the time of engine shut-off. To minimize the remaining quantity of propellants on-board the supplying propellants' O/F ratio should be controlled from the certain time before engine shutdown. To control an O/F ratio, a control system, which accurately measures and compares the remainder of propellants in tanks and pipes, should be needed. This paper solely dedicates its contents to explore the merits and demerits of various level sensor, which is one of the important elements for PUS and TDS, and the transmission and control of signals within space launch vehicle.

Small advance ratio and low Reynolds number of stratospheric propulsion system bring lots of challenges to the design of propellers. Contra-rotating propeller configuration is proposed to improve the propulsion efficiency. In this paper, the feasibility of contra-rotating propeller for stratospheric airship has been assessed and its performance has been investigated by wind tunnel tests. The experimental results indicate, at relatively low Reynolds number, although the advance ratio is fixed, the performance of propellers is different with variation of Reynolds number. Moreover, at the same Reynolds number, the efficiency of contra-rotating propeller achieved appears to be a few percent greater than that for a standard conventional propulsion system. It can be concluded that contra-rotating propellers would be an efficient means to improve the performance of stratospheric airship propulsion system.

To guarantee the proper functions of a satellite in the extreme space environment, the several test models are developed generally. There are advantages that the design and the analysis of Flight Model(FM) can be validated through these test models, and the functional reliabilities can be increased by reflecting the modifications on the final design of FM. The integration and test of Structure & Thermal Model(STM) of KOMPSAT, being currently developed, have been completed. In this paper, the processes of design/analysis and integration of the STM propulsion system, one of the KOMPSAT modules, are described.

It proposes an simple and intuitive method that calculates the equilibrium pressures of a propellant tank by appling the mass conservation principle on the helium in the liquid propellant and in an ullage volume of the propellant tank. A propellant loading analysis program is developed and validated against the existing reference data. And it has applied to the present developing program, COMS Chemical Propulsion Subsystem and the results are compared, it may use to develop a technology of the next geostationary complex satellite's propulsion system.
