  • Shocks are thought to be important in the dynamics and heating of the solar chromosphere. The observational determination of shock parameters, however, has been hardly done because of the difficulty of observation at a high spatial, temporal and spectral resolution, and the lack of an effective method of inferring physical parameters from spectral data. Our inversion of the spectral data of the $H{\alpha}$ and Ca II 854.2 nm lines simultaneously taken from an intranetwork area, produced temporal profiles of temperature as well as line-of-sight velocities, from which we infer that three-minute chromospheric oscillations prevailing in the upper chromosphere are in fact trains of strong shocks with a strength of about two and a propagation speed of 20 km s-1 that carry a mechanical energy flux of 500 W m-2 upward. Our result supports the notion that shocks dominate the heating of the upper chromosphere, and probably the corona as well, at least in intranetwork regions of the quiet sun.

  • Air curtains are widely used for gates of shopping mall, warehouse, cold stores and refrigerated display cabinets. The purpose of the air curtain is to reduce the infiltration of outdoor air and heat loss from the air conditioning space to ambient air. Design data for the air curtain given by previous researchers do not mention the influence of wind speed. Thus, this paper presents a performance of single jet air curtain in heating space when the wind blows toward the opening space of the building. A numerical simulation is used to study the influence of various parameters on the efficiency of the downward-blowing air curtain device which is installed inside of the wall above the door. The performance of the air curtain is evaluated by sealing efficiency which provides the assessment of the energy savings. A new safety factor is also proposed for determination of air curtain jet velocity under the various wind conditions.

  • The municipal government of Daejeon, Korea set up a plan to retrofit solar energy to the existing swimming pool. The pool was constructed in 1980, and meets the requirements of International standard. It will be used for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olymipics. The roof structure of the existing pool is to be modified to accomodate trickle solar collectors. In addition, various energy conserving ideas will be applied to the existing building structure. For the prevention of over heating of collectors on the roof, natural air convection scheme will be adopted within the collector system. Natural convection of passive type heating would be also adopted for the space heating of the pool when the system is idle. At present, the pool can be utilized only for two months a year without auxilairy heating. With oil heating, the energy cost would be too high for the normal operation. When this project completed in March 1984, it would be expected to be openable for seven months a year without a significan amount of auxiliary heating. In this project, two dimensional numerical analysis technic have been used to analyse the characterisitics of thermal performance of the swimming pool system. An experimental tat verification of the theoretical analysis have been also attempted.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing a coronagraph in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to install it on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph will utilize spectral information to simultaneously measure electron density, temperature, and velocity. For this, we develop the coronagraph as a two-step process. First, we will perform a stratospheric balloon-borne experiment, so called BITSE, in 2019 with a new type of coronagraph. Second, the coronagraph will be installed and operate on the ISS (CODEX) in 2021 to address a number of questions (e.g., source and acceleration of solar wind, and coronal heating) that are both fundamental and practically important in the physics of the solar corona and of the heliosphere. In this presentation, we will introduce recent progresses.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been collaborating with the NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, to install a coronagraph on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph will utilize spectral information to simultaneously measure electron density, temperature, and velocity. As a first step, we developed a new coronagraph and launched it on a stratospheric balloon in 2019 (BITSE) from Fort Sumner, New Mexico in USA. As the next step, the coronagraph will be be further developed, installed and operate on the ISS (CODEX) in 2022 to address a number of important questions (e.g., source and acceleration of solar wind, and coronal heating) in the physics of the solar corona and the heliosphere. Recently, BITSE has been launched at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. In this presentation, we will introduce the BITSE mission and discuss recent progress.

  • The multifamily housing has various advantages in construction cost, land-use intensity. KRIHS(1997) recommended the proper scale of th multifamily housing as 800 households in constructability, 1,000 households in facility compactability, 500 households in social aspect. At the early planning stage of project, the size of the multiftmily housing has, until now, been maximizingly considered under the regulation on which has been emphasized at the building volume ratio, land area, etc., except for the expenditure during the maintenance stage. This paper aimed at providing the proper size of multifamily housing in aspect of area and household number with maintenance cost at the early stage of project. For these, it took 곧 average cost function which is made from the 3-rd quardratic form and analyzes the unit increasing rate of the average cost. It surveyed in nationwide focused on the central heating system using diesel and kerosene. The number of samples is 88 and items of management cost is 11. The results are as follows ; first, 3rd-order quadratic function is proper at explaining the cost variation, considering the multicollinearity and statistics. Second, the proper size of multifamily housing is recommended with 83,000 $m^2$ on management area, 820 or over the 2,630 household number in aspect of total management cost.

  • The airflow along the surface of a launch vehicle together with base flow of clustered nozzles cause problems which may affect the stability or efficiency of the entire vehicle. The problem may occur when the vehicle is on the launching pad or even during flight. As for such problems, local steady-state loads, overall steady-state loads, buffet, ground wind loads, base heating and rocket-nozzle hinge moments are examined here specifically.

  • We report preliminary results from a radio study of central galaxies in cool and non-cool core clusters. A cooling flow is expected to rapidly form in the center of galaxy clusters unless additional heating mechanisms such as merging with sub clusters are at work. It has been suggested that cool flows can feed the AGN in the central galaxies, increasing their power. On the other hand, the AGN feedback can also affect the surrounding medium, heating back up the gas in the cluster core region. In this study, we investigate the co-evolution of cool flows and the AGN of galaxies located in the cluster center. For this study, we have selected 13 radio bright central galaxies from clusters with a range of cooling time scale. In this work, we present results of our recent observations using the Korean VLBI Network. We discuss the properties of the sample in radio and other wavelengths.

  • Lower thermospheric winds are forced primarily by non-uniform solar heating, atmospheric tides and other waves coming from below, and energy and momentum forcing associated with high-latitude magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, particularly ion drag and Joule heating. To understand the physical processes that control the thermospheric dynamics, we quantify the momentum forces that are mainly responsible for maintaining the high-latitude lower thermospheric wind system and examine the resulting momentum balance with the aid of the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR-TIEGCM) developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
