  • We investigated the optimum adhesive thickness for athermalizing an elastomeric lens mount in our space optics application. Theoretical results were compared with finite element solutions using two different models; discrete circular pads and discrete circular pads with columns filling the insertion holes reflecting the reality. A noticeable difference between their optimal thicknesses was observed, and physical interpretation revealed the uncertainty of prevailing athermal equations. A pilot sample was made to check our results and thermo-optical stress was assessed using an interferometer after isothermal load. This study presented insight into preliminary design guidance in elastomeric lens mounting.

  • This paper discusses an optimal design of high space factor BLDC motor. Because of high space factor BLDC, Nonliear finite element method considering saturation of outer-rotor is used. For optimal design, a new niching genetic algorithm, namely "Restricted Competitions Selection" is used. This algorithm constructs an objective function using only the most important criteria and provides a designer with a set of solution rather than one solution. To verify its effectiveness, the new niching genetic algorithm is applied to an actual high space factor BLDC motor We show that a new designed high space factor BLDC motor is superior to the actual high space factor BLDC.

  • A geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cable networks is presented using three cable elements. Firstly, derivation procedures of tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the space truss element and the elastic catenary cable element, and the isoparametric cable element are summarized. The load incremental method based on Newton-Raphson iteration method and the dynamic relaxation method are presented in order to determine the initial static state of cable nets subjected to self-weights and support motions. Furthermore, static non-linear analysis of cable structures under additional live loads are performed based on the initial configuration. Challenging example problems are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate static non-linear behaviors of cable nets.

  • Contemporary design environment is formed with image-centered trend based on pluralism. In this point of view, enterprises' building lobbies are public places containing the equivocal meaning, actively utilizing light as a design element to express the image of enterprises' identifications. Light is an immaterial entity having unlimited possibilities and potentials on space. It also acts as media to activate spaces and create new images in connection with formative elements of space. This study is to figure out how lightings are expressed and affected the formative characteristics of office lobby spaces and activate the specific characteristics of spaces. As a result, we drew conclusions as follows. First, as state-of-the-art technology and media are introduced, light is expressed on spaces as floating, direction, rhythm, silhouette, metaphor and allusion, sense of depth and volume. Second, expressive aspects of light in lobby space are embodiment of light, substantiation of immateriality, standing of materiality from the perspective of spatial aesthetics, and distortion/transformation of shape, pluralism phenomena of space from the perspective of spatial structure. In this way, light on building lobbies which are greatly required design differentiation strategy, specializes space and also integrates all the designs as not only a functional element but also a mental, psychological, formative element. Consequently, light on lobby spaces induces communication between spaces and users, makes formative value of existence in itself, and presents the characteristics of differentiated enterprises' identities.

  • The tendency of formalization in Contemporary Architecture deeply relies on the thought of Western Philosophy, which emphasizes the art of image perceived visually but ignores the body and perception of a human beig who uses the architecture and lives in it. On the contrary, Merleau-Ponty asserted long time ago that the world and the body are inseparably related to each other. The phenomenology is important in Architecture, since the center of thought should be taken back to the human body if a artistic meaning can be obtained by Architecture. From this point of view, the meaning of Contemporary Architecture can be renewed by the phenomenological idea of Merleau-Ponty as a means of expanding thought that overcomes the limit of formalization in Contemporary Architecture. This research aims to ream from Steven Holl's work, and show the Architectural elements that are used for preceptual experience of phenomenon and the function of those element sin Architectural space of his works. The result of study on about the phenomenal light and water in Architectural space of Steven Holl is as follows; First, in perceptional experience of phenomenon, time is an important element, which is successive and make a field that cause perceptional experience. Second, light, as a phenomenological element, acted as a means of expressing the comparison and change of light and shadow in Architectural space and showing the change of color by the diversity of time in inner space. Third, water, as a phenomenal lens, not only acted functional but also functioned as an element of sensual experience in Architectural space. It acted as an image containing time, space, just like a mirror that reflect the environment.

  • This study was conducted to develop standards for evaluating what extant the physical environments of housing which can cope with the needs of the aging society. This study was consisted through literature investigation research mainly, and research target literature limits keyword to elderly housing environment and chose connected domestic various literatures. The scope of evaluation was limited to the indoor spaces and outdoor spaces of housing as it was thought that the elderly spend much more time at indoor, outdoors, considering their physical characteristics. The study are as follows ; First, in outdoor only area from design environment element accessibility, and safety emphasized from equipment element, health of community territory was expose from design environment element that supportiveness is emphasized from equipment element. Second, in living room safety emphasized from design environment element in bedroom and bathroom of indoor individuation space, vestibule, balcony supportiveness, health was expose that is emphasized kitchen and mess. Also, was expose that supportiveness is emphasized from equipment element of all individuation spaces. Third, was expose that design environment element in corridor that is indoor official business space, stair, lobby, elevator and safety from equipment element and supportiveness are emphasized.

  • Street furniture such as benches, streetlamps, and shades which are easily accessible in cities has contributed to the promotion of active, lively environment for people living in cities. Furthermore, they make the characteristics of specific regions and cities, and are valued as a communication interface to restore the relationships between people and cities. The street furniture design with inherent publicness is an essential element for leisurely life and refined image of modern people who have experienced severance and mental poverty in uniform, vertical modern city space with the development of advanced science and technology. The purpose of this study is to analyze the new design approaches to street furniture which plays an important role in the determination of the images of modern city environment and to examine the characteristics and trends of such designs. First, in accordance with the flow of studies from publicness and public space to street furniture, the concept and meaning of publicness which is the basic element of public space were identified through theoretical examination, and the characteristics and roles of modern public space were analyzed through literature review, data review, and international cases. Based on the results of this theoretical analysis, the concept and meaning elements, function elements, and design elements of the street furniture which was planned in accordance with the goal and functions of public space were identified. For the meaning elements of street furniture design, fun, health, culture, sustainability, and vitalization were identified. For the function elements of street furniture design, convenience, safety, and delivery were identified. As the characteristics of modern street furniture design, convergent, green, digilog, functional, and universal designs were analyzed. This study is meaningful in that it recognized the roles of street furniture in modern public space as a concrete, practical environmental design element and estimated the development directions of street furniture design in public space.
