  • The Flight Model of MAC (Medium-sized Aperture Camera), a 2.5m GSD class earth observation camera has been aligned and assembled. Topics discussed in this paper include the ground MTF performance of the MAC system, and the alignment of the focal plane assembly. MTF was measured by a knife-edge scanning technique, and a 450 mm diameter Cassegrain collimator with diffraction-limited performance was made and used for the MTF measurements. System MTF was used as the figure-of-merit to find the best focus of the focal plane assembly.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of phone camera lenses, we have developed equipment for measuring the modulation transfer function(MTF) for small size lenses. The equipment is composed of an an image analyzer, object generator, and a lens mount. The object generator is rotated for on and off-axis measurement. The lens mount is of horizontal type and tiltable for precise alignment to the optical axis. After the initial alignment process, the measurement is done within 10 seconds automatically

  • The KITSAT-1 (Auguse, 1992) and the KITSAT-2(September, 1993) were successfully launched and operated by the SatRec(Satellite Research Center). Both carry the CCD cameras to monitor the image of the earth. We used the camera bench type automatic equipment in the KSRI(Korea Standards Research Institute) to measure the MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) value of the lens attached to the CCD camera. We measured the tangential MTF and the sagital MTF by varing the f-number and the field angle. According to the result, the light from a point source is focused within one pixel of the CCD chip when the f-number is smaller than 4.0, and the MTF value becomes smaller as the field angle increases.

  • The warpage on mobile phone camera packages occurs due to the CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch between a thin silicon die and a substrate. The warpage in the optical instruments such as camera module has an effect on the field curvature, which is one of the factors degrading the optical performance and the product yield. In this paper, we studied the effect of die bonding epoxy on the package and optical performance of mobile phone camera packages. We calculated the warpages of camera module packages by using a finite element analysis, and their shapes were in good agreement showing parabolic curvature. We also measured the warpages and through-focus MTF of camera module specimens with experiments. The warpage was improved on an epoxy with low elastic modulus at both finite element analysis and experiment results, and the MTF performance increased accordingly. The results show that die bonding epoxy affects the warpage generated on the image sensor during the packaging process, and this warpage eventually affects the optical performance associated with the field curvature.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) is one of parameters to evaluate the performance of imaging systems. Also, it can be used to restore information that is lost by a harsh space environment (radioactivity, extreme cold/heat condition and electromagnetic field etc.), atmospheric effects and falloff of system performance etc. This paper evaluated the MTF values of images taken by DubaiSat-1 satellite which was launched in 2009 by EIAST(Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology) and Satrec Initiative. Generally, the MTF was assessed using various methods such as a point source method and a knife-edge method. This paper used the slanted-edge method. The slantededge method is the ISO 12233 standard for the MTF measurement of electronic still-picture cameras. The method is adapted to estimate the MTF values of line-scanning telescopes. After assessing the MTF, we performed the MTF compensation by generating a MTF convolution kernel based on the PSF(point spread function) with image denoising to enhance the image quality.
