  • The effects of liming and inoculation of nodule bacteria on the growth and yield of soybeans in the 1st and 3rd year paddy-upland rotated paddy fields was investigated. Compared with the 1st rotated field, the degree of nodulation was much higher in the 3rd rotated one with greater difference at flowering stage than at the early stage of soybean growth. At the same time, greater difference in the degree of nodulation was also recognized between soybean varieties. In the 3rd year rotated field, a great deal of nodulation effect was recognized in the no-limed field but not in the limed one. The growth of soybean was not much affected by liming and nodulation at early stage but it was much increased by liming at flowering stage, especially in Williams 79, indeterminate type variety. Most of yield components and yield of soybean at maturity was much increased by liming with greater in Williams 79 than in Namhaekong. Nodulation effect on the yield components and yield was great in the no-limed filed but not in the limed one for both varieties. The yield and yield components of soybean, without no relation with liming and nodulation, was much great in the 3rd year rotated paddy fields than in the 1st year one, which was inferred that the more rotated fields the more yield and better growth of soybeans could be possible in the paddy-upland rotatonal soybean croppings.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the differences of the growth and yield characteristics at different planting dates in two soybean ecotypes from 1993 to 1994. Two summer types of soybean varieties, Suwon 163 and CNS 342, and two autumn types, Hwangkumkong and Keomcheongkong #1 were planted 7 times from 22 April to 21 June with 10 days interval in 1993 and 4 times from 22 April to 21 June with 20 days interval in 1994 at experimental field, Dankook University, Cheonan. Emergence rate was shown to difference between the summer types and the autumn types, as planting date delayed and between 1993 and 1994. The average emergence period was more shortened in 1994 than 1993. This was reduced as planting date delayed. Days to flowering, pod formation and maturity were shortened as planting date delayed, and observed that shortening of days to flowering and maturity were smaller in the summer types than the autumn types. Stem height, stem diameter, number of mainstem nodes, number of branches and number of branch nodes were different between the summer types and the autumn types and between 1993 and 1994. These were reduced as planting date delayed. The number of pods per plant was also different between 1993 and 1994, and reduced as planting date delayed. The number of seeds per pod was not different between 1993 and 1994, and shown to similar tendency as planting date delayed. It was observed that one hundred seed weight of the summer types were reduced, but the autumn types were not as planted date delayed in 1993. In 1994, one hundred seed weight was not measured because almost all pods were unfilled or shriveled probably due to high temperature during pod formation period. The rate of unfilled pods per plant was higher the autumn types than in the summer type of soybeans in 1994.

  • This experiment conducted to know physiological characteristics and stress effect on different growth stage of soybean by night illumination. Soybean variety, Shinpaldalkong 2, Keumjungkong and Muhankong were treated by night illumination with 20~30 Lux (0.05~0.08W m$^{-2}$ , 0.24~0.36 $\mu$㏖ S$^{-1}$ m$^{-2}$ ) for 15 days at six different growth stage, seedling, pre-floral initiation, post-floral initiation, pod filling and seed ripening stage. Night illumination delayed flowering to 2~8 days compared to control. Delay of flowering by night illumination severely effected at the pre-floral initiation stage. Stem length was increased all the night illumination treatments except the pod filling stage. Number of nodes in Shinpaldalkong 2 and Keumjungkong 1 were increased until before post-floral initiation stage but in Muhankong were increased until after post-floral initiation stage by night illumination treatments. Number of pods were decreased all the night illumination treatments except seedling stage compared with control. Yield decreased all the treatments and severe the loss rate degree showed the order of prefloral initiation, post-floral initiation, seedling and flowering stage.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of day length on some chracteristics and seed weight in the soybean cultivars. Those were classified into three type's of seed weight with delaying seeding date in the previous paper. Flowering was delayed as the longer day length was employed. When the length became longer. the number of leaves at flowering greatly length of main stem and the number of nodes at maturity greatly increased. The seed weight decreased when the day length was longer than 14 hours. Negative correlation was obtained between seed weight and day length. There was negative correlation between seed weight and the number of days required to flowering, and length of main stem and the number of nodes at maturity. Type I cultivars decreased in seed weight when the day length was longer than 16 hours, but this trend was found to be clear with type II cultivars. Type III cultivars decreased in seed weight with increasing the day length.

  • Compositional and quantitative changes of 4-desmethylsterols in soybean (Glycine max. cv. Gangrim) seed and pod at six stages of development from flowering were investigated. The content of 4-desmethyl-, 4-monomethyl- and 4,4-dimethylsterols in developing soybean seed and pod was found to vary between 0.16-0.35, 0.04-0.12 and 0.04-0.06%, respectively. The predominating 4-desmethylsterols were sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. The proportion of sitosterol in seed decreased to 57.0% with maturation, while in pod increased up to 88.7%. ${\triangle}^{7,22,25}$ Stigmastatrienol estimated 7.5% was detected in the fully mature seed.

  • Thirty eight varieties with high uniformity and clearance in grain quality among 70 colored soybeans collected from nation-wide provinces were investigated for their seed morphological and agronomic traits. As for seed morphological traits, grain volumetric size, grain weight, grain length, grain thickness, . hilum length and width were studied on the tendency of statistical dispersion and variations. As a result, four groups could be classified on the basis of 100 grains weight, so as small, medium, large, and super large groups, Also, as for agronomic traits, among others, the tendency of setting in flowering date, maturing date, yield components, and stem weight, stem length were studied on the basis of statistical inter-relationships between above mentioned characteristics. From the above, bigger variations were detected in weighing characters of soybean plants than in duration characters. And the flowering and maturing days showed significant relationships to the stem length, stem weight, also stem length and stem weight to the grain yield.

  • Lunasin is small subunit peptide of coded from Gm2S-1 gene in soybean. It has been previously demonstrated that lunasin is a novel and promising cancer preventive peptide. Lunasin peptide is found only in the seed and not other tissues. And lunasin peptide starts to appear at 5 weeks after flowering and remains in the mature seed. We report here firstly lunasin peptide identified from soybean callus induced by the tissue culture and demonstrate its anticancer properties. The lunasin was identified and purified from soybean callus aged for 6 months. The callus lunasin($1{\mu}M$) inhibited the acetylation of histone H3 and H4 by 58.8% and 56.5%, respectively. And it fully inhibited foci formation compared to the values of the positive control(no lunasin) and negative control(no MCA). Purified lunasin was able to internalize into the cell and localized in the nucleus.

  • Soybean, azuki-bean and mungbean were cultivated at different growing conditions, May 10, June 9, July 9 seeding, and May 10 seeding-short day treatment, to investigate the distribution of flowering date and the variation of pod/flower ratio. The growth habit type of the soybean variety used was determinate, but the azuki-bean and mungbean varieties used showed indeterminate growth habit. The pod/flower ratio ranged 38 to 48% for soybean, 23 to 34% for azuki-bean and 46 to 60% for mungbean along with growing conditions. Flower abscission for soybean and mungbean, and pod abscission for azuki-bean affected more on the number of matured pods. Soybean showed once full blooming period, but azuki-bean and mungbean showed two or three times full blooming period except July 9 seeding plot through the whole growing period. Flowers bloomed just after every full blooming period showed lower value of pod/flower ratio and higher pod/flower ratio was obtained from flowers bloomed before or far after full blooming at plots seeded May 10 and June 9 in three pulse crops. Most full blooming period of soybean coincided within 5 days near the terminal leaf appearance date, and number of flowers bloomed before terminal leaf expansion and matured pods from these flowers were major in every soybean plant at all growing codition plots. No relations were found between terminal leaf appearance and flowering or pod setting patterns of azuki-bean and mungbean.
