  • The objective of this study are to analyze changes in future rainfall patterns in the Soyang-dam watershed according to the RCP 4.5 scenario of climate change. Second objective is to project peak flow and hourly sediment simulated for the future extreme rainfall events using the SWAT model. For these, accuracy of SWAT hourly simulation for the large scale watershed was evaluated in advance. The results of model calibration showed that simulated peak flow matched observation well with acceptable average relative error. The results of future rainfall pattern changes analysis indicated that extreme storm events will become more severe and frequent as climate change progresses. Especially, possibility of occurrence of large scale extreme storm events will be greater on the periods of 2030-2040 and 2050-2060. In addition, as shown in the SWAT hourly simulation for the future extreme storm events, more severe flood and turbid water can happen in the future compared with the most devastating storm event which occurred by the typhoon Ewiniar in 2006 year. Thus, countermeasures against future extreme storm event and turbid water are needed to cope with climate change.

  • This study analyzed the reduction efficiency to a debris barrier planed with the Office of Forestry and local provinces among diverse measurements for the diminution of high-density turbid water and soil erosion of Soyang reservoir. As the analysis of soil erosion of Soyang river basin applying rainfall data (2005) and GIS database, soil erosion is estimated as 4,819,494 ton. Also, in the analysis of unit soil erosion, Chugok-, Jaun-, and Ohang stream shows high value comparing with other watersheds. Debris barrier watersheds are extracted as the center of 94 debris barrier points using GIS spatial analysis. As the analysis of soil erosion and sediment delivery ratio (SDR) of debris barrier watershed, the reduction efficiency of soil erosion of debris barrier of 2005 is analyzed as 6.8%, that is 330,203 ton. Also, the reduction efficiency of soil erosion of debris barrier of 2005 increases as 10.5%, that is 506,783 ton, when the locations of debris barrier are changed into the high soil erosion area over 5,000 ton.

  • The main idea of Sasang medicine is that everyone has his own unique constitution. There are four kinds of constitutions and these are Taeyang, Soyang, Teaum and Soum. Although Sasang medicine is a unique and originative medical theory with creative ideas of Korean traditional medicine, the classification of individual constitution mainly depends on the methods which may not be objectively proven and scientifically understood. This study was carried out tn establish scientific understanding of Sasang medicine by investigating the possible genetic difference among four constitutions. Sasang constitution classification was performed by Sasang medicine research group in Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and Kyung Hee University, Genomic DNA was prepared from the blood of individuals of different constitutions and RAPD(Random amplified polymorphic DNAs) analysis was then carried out to investigate the possible difference among different constitutions on DNA level. For RAPD analysis, ten different random primers were applied to Teaum, Soyang and Soum group DNA samples and the presence of DNA markers specific for each constitution was investigated.

  • The seasonal variation of organic matter and the oxidation efficiency of BOD and COD were investigated in several reservoirs and rivers located in the Han River system from March 2005 to April 2006. The concentrations of TOC in the Dong River, the Myeongjicheon stream and the Han-River varied with season. Mean concentration of TOC in the lotic environment ranged from 1.9 to 6.8 mgC/L. Oxidation efficiencies calculated from carbon were approximately 12.6 to 27.1% for BOD and 27.2 to 75.0% for COD, respectively. DOC to TOC ratio in the rivers ranged from 64.3 to 79.0%. Epilimnetic TOC concentrations in two clear and deep lakes (Lake Soyang and Paro) ranged from 2.0 to 2.8 mgC/L. TOC concentrations in the lower three dams (Lake Chunchon, Uiam, and Chungpyung) were relatively high that ranged from 3.4 to 3.7 mgC/L.Oxidation efficiencies in five lakes ranged from 10.6 to 17.2% for BOD and 32.6 to 49.5% for COD, respectively. The range of DOC to TOC in Lake Soyang and Paro was approximately 69. 0 to 73.4%. The ratios of lower three dams ranged from 48.2 to 62.3%. The differences among the lakes seemed to be asociated with limnological and hydrological characteristics of the lakes.

  • The diversity of observed hydrologic data and the development of geographic information system leads significant progress for developing distributed runoff models in the world. One of the typical examples is TOPMODEL, but the spatial coverage of its application Is limited on small headwater basins. The purpose of this study attempts to overcome its limitation and consequently develops a semi-distributed TOPMODEL. The developed model is composed of two components: a watershed runoff component for a lumped representation of hydrologic runoff process on the catchment scale and a kinematic wave type hydraulic channel routing component lot routing the catchment outflows. The application basin is the $2,703km^2$ upper Soyang dam site and several daily and hourly events are selected for model calibrations and verifications. The model parameters are estimated on 1990 daily event. The model performance on correlation coefficient between observed and computed flows are above 0.90 for the verification events. It is concluded that the developed model in this study can be used for flood analysis in large drainage basins.

  • Microbial Fe (III) reduction is important for the biogeochemical cycle in the sediment of freshwater system. Also, the Fe (III) reducing mechanism make a model of oxidizing organic compounds and reducing toxic heavy metals, such as chrome or uranium. Thirty-seven strains which have Fe (III) reducing activity were isolated from sediments in lake Soyang and Chunho reservoir. The initial concentration of Fe (II) was the highest in sediments of lake Soyang. However, the highest Fe (III) reducing activity was shown in Chunho reservoir. All isolates were tested for Fe (III) reducing activity. Strains C2 and C3, which were isolated from sediments of Chunho reservoir, showed the highest activity. These strains were tested to see if they utilize various electron donors such as glucose, yeast extract, acetate, ethanol and toluene. Significantly, glucose and yeast extract were used as electron donors. Also these strains were conformed to use humid acid and nitrate as electron accepters. The 16S rRNA sequences of strains C2 and C3 were closely related to Aeromonas hydrophila with 95% similarity.

  • Objective : We investigated the sasang constitutional difference of physiological and psychological response in various thermal environmental conditions. Methods: Among 210 volunteers, 30 healthy subjects were selected through the QSCC II (a questionnaire for constitutional discrimination) and the manual examination of a specialist in sasang constitution. Subjects consisted of 10 each Soyang(少陽), Soeum(少陰), and Taeum(太陽). Experimental environments were set by six different conditions to be $23^{\circ}C,\;50\%\;RH,\;0.lm/s;\;25^{\circ}C,\;25\%\;RH,\;0.lm/s;\;25^{\circ}C,\;50\%\;RH,\;0.lm/s;\;25^{\circ}C,\;50\%\;RH,\;0.4m/s;\;25^{\circ}C,\;75\%\;RH,\;0.1m/s;\;and\;27^{\circ}C,\;50\%\;RH,\;0.1m\s$ (respectively temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity). Skin temperature, core temperature, heart rate variability (HRV), and galvanic skin response (GSR) were measured for each subject Additionally, subjects were asked about comfort through the questionnaire. Results: From the viewpoint of external temperature sensibility, in all experimental environments, generally the Taeum type feels hotter and the Soeum feels colder than other types. In relative comfort, Soeum types were most sensitive to wind velocity change. From the viewpoint of body temperature, Taeum type was lower and Soyang was higher than other types. The measurements of HRV and GSR showed no difference between the types. Conclusion : The four sasang constitution types showed different responses to various thermal environmental conditions. Accordingly, our research could provide basic data for building the optimal thermal conditions for individuals based on sasang constitution. Consequently, it will help to build a healthy environment for everyday life.
