  • The purpose of this study lies in analyzing the effects of Fukushima nuclear plant incident, due to the earthquake in the northeastern part of Japan, on South Korean consumers'responses to domestic marine products. Survey results show that the response to the event by all consumers is not significant, but not by individual consumer. Empirical results show that if consumers are relatively more interested in health issues, if they consume mollusca relatively more among marine products and if they are with children under the age of 14, they increased the consumption of domestic marine products while decreased that of Japanese seafood. On the contrary, if consumers take shellfish products relatively more among seafood, they reduced the consumption of domestic marine products as well as Japanese ones.

Sample subjects of this study were female college students of Korea(Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do) and China(Yunnan). The questionnaire data from 780 college students were analyzed through the following statistical analyses: a reliability analysis, factor analysis, frequency, mean, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study was as follows. First, the complaining behavior types of college students were divided into 4 factors: third party, breakaway behavior, compensation claim, and negative word of mouth. Second, significant differences were revealed between the dissatisfaction and the conditions of complaining behavior between Korean and Chinese consumers. Third, significant differences were found which were related to the effects of lifestyle and personality on types of consumer complaining behavior between Korea and China. Fourth, the complaining behavior factors of 'third party' and 'compensation claims' of Chinese consumers were higher than those of Korean consumers; however, the 'negative WOM' of Korean consumers were higher than those of Chinese consumers. Fifth, the lifestyle factors of 'fashion orientation, 'rational orientation' and 'activity orientation' of Chinese consumers were higher than those of Korean consumers. The 'achievement orientation' of Korean consumers was higher than that of Chinese consumers. And the personality factors of 'sense of responsibility' of Chinese consumers were higher than Korean consumers. Finally, 'openness' of Korean consumers were higher than Chinese consumers.

  • Purpose: This study aims to explore the shopping motivations of consumers at South Korean convenience stores and create distinct consumer segments based on these motivations. Additionally, the research seeks to propose tailored marketing strategies for convenience stores by analyzing consumer demographics and satisfaction levels within each segment. Research design, data and methodology: Using factor analysis, we identify three primary shopping motivation factors: "social/leisure," "functional," and "convenience." Subsequently, we use cluster analysis to group convenience store consumers into three categories: the "convenience-seeking group," the "function/convenience-seeking group," and the "multipurpose-seeking group." To gain a deeper understanding of each consumer segment, we investigate how demographic factors relate to their levels of satisfaction. Results: These findings offer valuable insights for adapting to shifting consumer preferences and the increasingly competitive landscape of South Korean convenience stores, especially in the expanding services offered by online businesses. Conclusions: This research emphasizes the significance of developing marketing strategies tailored to address the distinctive needs and preferences of individual consumer segments. These strategies empower convenience stores to establish a competitive advantage in the market.

  • This study has been designed to explore the preferences of interior space for those living in apartment housing. It also examines the relationships between preferences of interior space, such as storage space, organization type of LDK(the living room, the dining room, and kitchen), space facing south, an interior garden, the concept of each room and the characteristics of the consumers, such as age, educational background employment status of homemakers, occupation of the primary income provider, family-life cycle, total household income, the size of floor space, and homeownership. In conclusion, this study suggests that at the time of designing apartment housing units, serious consideration should be given to the built-in closets or storage space in the anbang and to the location of a child's room facing to the south of the dwelling, especially for the families with a child attending primary school or younger and higher education level of homemaker. This study also recommends that the organization of the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen should be varied according to the housing size and the age of homemaker.

  • This study attempts to explore and explain major socieconomic factors which determine the extent of rural consumers' external search behavior in cases of two product categories: electric appliances and clothing. For the purpose of this study, interviews were conducted with 201 home managers in four rural towns(Hwasun, Haenam, Naju, and Bulkyo) of South Cholla Province. On the whole, the hypotheses that socioeconomic status, age and the characteristics of region of rural consumers make significant differences in their shopping motivation and the extent of external search are generally supported in case of clothing. No substantial differences are found in case of electric appliances. This study suggests that the effective purchasing system and the providing of informative consumer information would be needed to rural consumers for their extensive search. It also suggests that psychological aspects and situational variables in addition to socioeconomic aspects presumably contribute to our understanding of search behavior.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Targeting consumers who consume lunches at their worksite cafeterias would be a valuable approach to reduce sodium intake in South Korea. To assess the relationships between socio-demographic factors, consumer satisfaction, attitudes, barriers and the frequency of sodium-reduced meal intake. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We implemented a cross-sectional research, analyzing data from 738 consumers aged 18 years or older (327 males and 411 females) at 17 worksite cafeterias in South Korea. We used the ordinary least squares regression analysis to determine the factors related to overall satisfaction with sodium-reduced meal. General linear models with LSD tests were employed to examine the variables that differed by the frequency of sodium-reduced meal intake. RESULTS: Most subjects always or usually consumed the sodium-reduced meal (49%), followed by sometimes (34%) and rarely or never (18%). Diverse menus, taste and belief in the helpfulness of the sodium-reduced meal significantly increased overall satisfaction with the sodium-reduced diet (P < 0.05). We found importance of needs in the following order: 1) 'menu diversity' (4.01 points), 2) 'active promotion' (3.97 points), 3) 'display of nutrition labels in a visible location' (3.96 points), 4) 'improvement of taste' (3.88 points), and 5) 'education of sodium-reduction self-care behaviors' (3.82 points). CONCLUSION: Dietitians could lead consumers to choose sodium-reduced meals by improving their taste and providing diverse menus for the sodium-reduced meals at worksite cafeterias.
