  • Resistance to Phytophthora Capsici and horticultural characteristics of selections from the resistance sources such as PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258 (=Line 29), CM334, KC268, KC358, KC820, KC821, KC822, KC823 (Line 29), KC462, KC463, KC464 were evaluated and recorded in the process of seed increase. Selections of PI123469, PI201234, PI201232, AC2258, KC823 (Line 29 = AC2258) of them showed the highest level of resistance. A considerable difference in the level of resistance was observed between lines selected from the same sources. The variation between selections derived from the same source was thought to be attributable to natural cross-pollination that may have occurred during the seed increase. Therefore, securing self-pollinated seed by wrapping the flower buds before anthesis would be necessary to obtain genetically pore resistant lines. The next alternative would be to increase the seed in small net houses for single line or field cage.

  • The study discussed in this paper presents a method of estimating sources of geometric errors in suspension bridges in use, based on geometric survey data. A geometric error is defined as the difference between the survey data and the design geometry of a main cable. It is assumed that the geometric error in a suspension bridge is caused by the variations in the weight of the stiffening girder and the deformation of the anchorage foundations due to the creep of soil. The variations in the girder weight and the deformation of the foundation were estimated by constructing a matrix of factors that affect suspension bridges due to the variations. To check the validity of the proposed method, it was applied to the Kwang-An Bridge, and the sources of geometric errors in the bridge were estimated using the survey data.

  • In this parer, an ABR (Available Bit Rate) congestion control algorithm for voice transmission in ATM networks was proposed. To deal with the network congestion problem, not only the buffer level of a switch but also the variation of the buffer level were considered. Also, to resolve the unfairness among sources where the bit transfer rates vary, a loading factor that is used to adjust the bit rate was introduced. To show the superiority of this paper over others, simulation was done with a network of 7 voice sources and 4 switches, which was represented by Petri net model. ExSpect was used for simulation. The simulation results showed that there was improvement in network utilization and that unfairness among sources were resolved a lot.

  • In ATM switching system link bandwidth is one of the improtant resources. Thus ATM switching system must allocate the bandwidth to the users efficiently and guarantee the QoS. Especially to guarantee the QoS of the VBR traffic source such as video, users must declare the traffic characteristics and QoS expectations using UPC parameters. The CAC can use two multiplexig models in variation to link capacity and connection number. One is loseless multiplexing model; the second is a statistical multiplexing model. The loseless multiplexing model performs best when the number of mutiplexed sources is small, but as the number of multiplexed sources is increase the CAC must use the statistical multiplexing model. In this paper, the statistical multiplexing models are studied, which are suitable for high capacity ATM link on VBR traffic sources. The satistical multiplexing model and the loseless multiplexing model are combined. In statistical model we map the UPC parameters provided by new VBR connection to appropriate source traffic model. In the high capacity ATM link, as the connection number increases, the statical multiplexing gain increases.

  • The variation of glucosinolates (GSLs) in Chinese cabbage ('Sinhongssam') (Brassica rapa L. spp. pekinensis) cultivated under lights to control plant growth conditions was evaluated at different development stages. Under experimental conditions in plant factory system, plant growth conditions including light, temperature, and nutrients were designed to enhance GSLs. The variation of glucosinolates (GSLs) in Chinese cabbage ('Sinhongssam') (Brassica rapa L. spp. pekinensis) cultivated under lights to control plant growth conditions was evaluated at different development stages. Under experimental conditions in plant factory system, plant growth conditions including light, temperature, and nutrients were designed to enhance GSLs. The contents of GSLs were quantified in Chinese cabbage according to different light sources (Red+White, RW; Red+Blue+White, RBW, Fluorescence lamp, FL) at development stages (28, 42, and 56 days after sowing, DAS) using HPLC. Nine GSLs including five aliphatic (progoitrin, sinigrin, glucoalyssin, gluconapin, and glucobrassicanapin) three indolyl (glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, and neoglucobrassicin), and one aromatic (gluconasturtiin) GSLs were identified based on peak retention time in previous results of our laboratory. GSL contents were higher in RBW (36.55) and lower in FL ($15.24{\mu}mol/g/\;DW$). Results revealed that GSL contents were higher under controlled photoperiods (20/4 h) ($58.35{\mu}mol/g\;DW$) and controlled light intensity ($160{\mu}mol/m^2/s$) ($34.02{\mu}mol/g\;DW$), respectively. Lower amount of progoitrin and comparatively higher amount of glucobrassicin and gluconasturtiin was noted in Chinese cabbage cultivated under FL light (2.38, 9.82, and 2.10) at 42 DAS, photoperiod 20/4 h (3.16, 2.52, and 1.30) at 28 DAS, and light intensity at $130{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (2.28, 2.24, and $1.51{\mu}mol/g\;DW$) at 42 DAS. Therefore FL light, photoperiod (20/4 h), and light intensity ($130{\mu}mol/m^2/s$) were considered as most suitable for the enhancement of GSLs in Chinese cabbage.

  • We analyzed the variations of water quality with flow regime alterations to determine the characteristics of the stream where the stream management is considerably difficult due to the high variability of the flow rates. In this study, both flow rates and water qualities were monitored at the tributaries, 34 in count, of both Geum River and Sabgyo Lake Basins. The variation of water qualities were divided into 2 types, based on their stream flow rates, known as Type I and Type II. If the water quality of a stream increases during low flow rate periods compared with high flow rate periods, it is classified as Type I; if the water quality of the stream increases during high flow rate periods compared with low flow rate periods, it falls under Type II. The analysis for the variations of water qualities, of all 43 basins, resulted to 24 basins under Type I and Nineteen 19 basins under Type II. The variations of water qualities were analyzed first by using Regression Analysis followed by Statistical Analysis. The average slope of the variations of water qualities and the slope of the standard deviations were 0.00135 and 0.00477, respectively. The Probability Distributions of both Type I and Type II basins were 61.1% and 38.9%, respectively. The basin having a probability distribution of 61.1% and is also known as Type I, increases during periods of low flow rates, due to the presence of point sources. Therefore, the basin should be enforced with stream management. Before the stream management can be implemented in all streams falling under Type II, the sources of contaminants should first be estimated. These contaminants can be classified into two parts, the first is Point source pollution and the second is Non-point source pollution, where the Non-Point source pollution can be sub-divided into two types, with storm runoff and without storm runoff.

  • Calving records of 107 heifers from two breed groups were used to identify the major factors contributing to calving difficulty (dystocia) and compare the influence of pelvic diameters, weight and height of heifers measured after breeding and before calving on dystocia. The horizontal and vertical pelvic diameters, hip height and weight of heifers were measured two months after breeding and again two months before calving. Snell transformed calving difficulty scores (0 = normal to 100 = surgical intervention) were used in analyzing the data by analysis of covariance. Body condition score of the heifer, sire birth weight of the calf, birth weight of the calf, and ratio of calf birth weight to pelvic area all had significant effects on dystocia. Calf birth weight, ratio of calf birth weight to pelvic area, and heifer's condition score were especially important. However, sex of calf did not have a significant influence on dystocia. Generally, the variables measured before calving accounted for a higher proportion of variation in dystocia than those measured after breeding. Thus, based on the relative importance of the major factors affecting dystocia, it is suggested that selection of bulls with low birth weight for breeding on normal size heifers with optimum body condition score, and well developed pelvic opening, would be effective in reducing the incidence and severity of dystocia in beef heifers.

  • This review describes the stratagies of development of virus-resistant Alstroemeria plants using the genetic modification system. Despite of increasing of its importance in cut flower market, improvements of some horticultuirally important traits such as fragrance, long vase-life, virus resistance and tolerance against abiotic stresses are lack of the breeding program in Alstroemeria. Of these traits, virus-resistance is quite difficult to develop in Alstroemeria plants due to the limitations of genetic variation in the existed germplasm. To extend the genetic variation, plant biotechnological techniques such as genetic transformation and tissue culture should be combined to develop virus-resistant line in Alstroemeria. In this review, several strategies for the generation of virus-resistance by using natural resistance genes, pathogen-derived genes and other sources including pathogen-derived proteins, virus-specific antibodies and ribosome-inactivating proteins are presented. Also, brief histories of breeding, tissue culture, and transformation system in Alstroemeria plants are described to inderstand of the application of transgenic approach for the development of virus-resistance in Alstroemeria species.

  • Annual growth segments of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis (Fucales, Fucaceae) are denoted by air bladders that form each spring. By examining annual growth segments, it may be possible to infer information about the physical conditions during the growth period; however, it is uncertain whether the annual segments will expand in size after the initial growth. We examined A. nodosum segments from three populations in Nova Scotia, and statistically evaluated whether the annual growth (length, mass, and maximum diameter) of segments was independent of the age of the frond, whether the segments increased in size after the initial growth, and whether the segment lengths were correlated with mean water temperatures and mean air temperatures when the segments were formed. We found that the growth in length of A. nodosum is dependent on the age of the frond, but frond age explained less than 12 % of the overall variation in length. However, the mass and maximum diameter of segments were independent of the age of the frond. Differences occurred between the lengths of segments formed in different years, but there was no significant correlation with regional mean water or air temperatures. This study indicates that the length of A. nodosum segments may be an indicator of the annual physical characteristics of a site, but future studies are needed to identify which factors have the strongest influence on growth patterns.

  • Recently, the interest in DC systems to achieve more efficient connection with renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and DC loads has been growing extensively. DC systems are more advantageous than AC systems because of their low conversion losses. However, the DC-link voltage is variable during operation because of different random effects. This study focuses on DC voltage stabilization applied in stand-alone DC microgrids by means of voltage ranges, power management, and coordination scheme. The quality and stability of the entire system are improved by keeping the voltage within acceptable limits. In terms of optimized control, the maximum power should be tracked from renewable resources during different operating modes of the system. The ESS and VSDG cover the power shortage after all available renewable energy is consumed. Keeping the state of charge of the ESS within the allowed bands is the key role of the control system. Load shedding or power generation curtailment should automatically occur if the maximum tolerable voltage variation is exceeded. PSIM-based simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed control measures.
