  • In this paper, the creep behavior of bolted rock was analyzed by using the unconfined creep tests and the numerical results. Based on the test results, the Bolted Burgers creep model (B-B model) was proposed to clarify the creep mechanism of rock mass due to rock bolts. As to the simulation of the creep behaviour of bolted rock, a new user-defined incremental iterative format of the B-B model was established and the open-source $FLAC^{3D}$ code was written by using the object-oriented language (C++). To check the reliability of the present B-B creep constitutive model program, a numerical model of a tunnel with buried depth of 1000 m was established to analyze the creep response of the tunnel with the B-B model support, the non-support and the bolt element support. The simulation results show that the present B-B model is consistent with the calculated results of the inherent bolt element in $FLAC^{3D}$, and the convergence deformation can be more effectively controlled when the proposed B-B model is used in the $FLAC^{3D}$ software. The big advantage of the present B-B creep model secondarily developed in the $FLAC^{3D}$ software is the high computational efficiency.

  • I have developed a processor for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data compression using range-doppler algorithm for educational purpose. The program realized a generic SAR focusing algorithm so that it can deal with any SAR system if the specification is known. It can run efficiently on a low-cost computer by selecting minimum size out of a whole dataset, and can produce intermediate images during the process. Especially, the program is designed for educational purpose in such a way that Doppler centroid and azimuth ambiguity can be determined graphically by the user. By distributing the source code and the algorithm to public, I intend to maximize the educational effect on understanding and utilizing SAR data. This paper introduces the principle of SAR focusing algorithm embedded on the eSAR processor and shows an example of data processing using ERS-1 raw data.

  • Discrete event simulation environments often need to be modified because additional questions to systems may become apparent while observing the simulation results repeatedly. It leads to increasing development budget and depreciating the effectiveness of the environment. To avoid the modifications and to generate the altered results, this paper applies an Event Control Model (ECM) with control functions that modulate, delete and generate the events at the simulation time. In addition, this paper suggests an easier approach for domain-users, who do not want to program at source code level, by using ECM templates. The simulators with the ECMs can have better extensibility because it becomes more adaptable to possibly unanticipated changes. It prevents increasing development costs due to modifications or development of new models by M&S experts, and it provides a new alternative step to domain users. To support the effectiveness of this approach, this paper describes a relevant example, which is composed of an initial simulation model based on our empirical studies. It will show that there exist the uncountable benefits because the existing simulator is reused by domain users without new projects.

  • Kyung-hee Thorium Fuel (KTF), a heterogeneous thorium-based seed and blanket design concept for pressurized light water reactors, is being studied as an alternative to enhance proliferation resistance and fuel cycle economics of PWRs. The proliferation resistance characteristics of the KTF assembly design were evaluated through parametric studies using neutronic performance indices such as Bare Critical Mass (BCM), Spontaneous Neutron Source rate (SNS), Thermal Generation rate (TG), and Radio-Toxicity. Also, Fissile Economic Index (FEI), a new index for gauging fuel cycle economy, was suggested and applied to optimize the KTF design. A core loaded with optimized KTF assemblies with a seed-to-blanket ratio of 1: 1 was tested at the Korea Next Generation Reactor (KNGR), ARP-1400. Core design characteristics for cycle length, power distribution, and power peaking were evaluated by HELIOS and MASTER code systems for nine reload cycles. The core calculation results show that the KTF assembly design has nearly the same neutronic performance as those of a conventional $UO_2$ fuel assembly. However, the power peaking factor is relatively higher than that of conventional PWRs as the maximum Fq is 2.69 at the M$9^{th}$ equilibrium cycle while the design limit is 2.58. In order to assess the economic potential of a heterogeneous thorium fuel core, the front-end fuel cycle costs as well as the spent fuel disposal costs were compared with those of a reference PWR fueled with $UO_2$. In the case of comprising back-end fuel cycle cost, the fuel cycle cost of APR-1400 with a KTF assembly is 4.99 mills/KWe-yr, which is lower than that (5.23 mills/KWe-yr) of a conventional PWR. Proliferation resistance potential, BCM, SNS, and TG of a heterogeneous thorium-fueled core are much higher than those of the $UO_2$ core. The once-through fuel cycle application of heterogeneous thorium fuel assemblies demonstrated good competitiveness relative to $UO_2$ in terms of economics.

  • Purpose: We provide a condition-based maintenance policy where a surrogate variable is used for monitoring system performance. We constructed a risk function by taking into account the risk and losses accompanied with erroneous decisions. Methods: Assuming a unique degradation process for the performance variable and its specific relationship with the surrogate variable, the maintenance policy is determined. A risk function is developed on the basis of producer's and consumer's risks accompanied with each decision. With a strategic safety factor considered, the optimal threshold value for the surrogate variable is determined based on the risk function. Results: The condition-based maintenance is analyzed from the point of risk. With an assumed safety consideration, the optimal threshold value of the surrogate variable is provided for taking a maintenance action. The optimal solution cannot be obtained in a closed form. An illustrative numerical example and solution is provided with a source code of R program. Conclusion: The study can be applied to situation where a sensor signal is issued if the system performance begins to degrade gradually and reaches eventually its functional failure. The study can be extended to the case where two or more performance variables are connected to a same surrogate variable. Also estimation of the distribution parameters and risk coefficients should be further studied.

  • In this study, an electron-scattering device was fabricated to practically use the ultra-high dose rate electron beams for the FLASH preclinical research in Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences. The Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences has been involved in the investigation of linear accelerators for preclinical research and has recently implemented FLASH electron beams. To determine the geometry of the scattering device for the FLASH preclinical research with a 6-MeV linear accelerator, the Monte Carlo N-particle transport code was exploited. By employing the fabricated scattering device, the off-axis and depth dose distributions were measured with radiochromic films. The generated mean energy of electron beams via the scattering device was 4.3 MeV, and the symmetry and flatness of the off-axis dose distribution were 0.11% and 2.33%, respectively. Finally, the doses per pulse were obtained as a function of the source to surface distance (SSD); the measured dose per pulse varied from 4.0 to 0.2 Gy/pulse at an SSD range of 20-90 cm. At an SSD of 30 cm with a 100-Hz repetition rate, the dose rate was 180 Gy/s, which is sufficient for the preclinical FLASH studies.

  • As NPPs continue to operate, liquid waste continues to be generated, and containers are needed to store and transport them at low cost and high capacity. To transport and store liquid phase very low-level radioactive waste (VLLW), a container is designed by considering related regulations. The design was constructed based on the existing container design, which easily transports and stores liquid waste. The radiation shielding calculation was performed according to the composition change of barium sulfate (BaSO4) using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) without mixing the additional BaSO4, represented the maximum dose of 1.03 mSv/hr (<2 mSv/hr) and 0.048 mSv/hr (<0.1 mSv/hr) at the surface of the inner container and at 2 m away from the surface, respectively, for a 10 Bq/g of 60Co source. It was confirmed that the dose from the inner container with the VLLW content satisfied the domestic dose standard both on the surface of the container and 2 m from the surface. Although it satisfies the dose standard without adding BaSO4, a shielding material, the inner container was designed with BaSO4 added to increase radiation safety.

  • Greybox fuzzing is known as an effective method to discover unknown security flaws reside in software and has been actively researched today. However, most of greybox fuzzing tools require an executable file. Because of this, a library, which cannot be executed by itself requires an additional executable file for greybox fuzzing. Generating such an executable file is challengeable because it requires both understanding of the library and fuzzing. In this research, we suggest the approach to generate an executable file automatically for a library and implement this approach as a tool based on the LLVM framework. This tool shows that executable files and seed files can be generated automatically by static/dynamic analysis of a unit test in the target project. A generated executable file is compatible with various greybox fuzzers like AFL because it has a common interface for greybox fuzzers. We show the performance of this tool as code coverage and discovered unknown security bugs using generated executable files and seed files from open source projects through this tool.

  • The prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a planing hull vessel is an important and challenging topic for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) applications to naval hydrodynamics. In this paper, the resistance and planing attitude analysis for a Fridsma hull, which is a prismatic planing hull, in still water are numerically studied using OpenFOAM. OpenFOAM is an open source code package based on C++ libraries and the finite volume method (FVM) for the discretization of the RANS equation. The volume of fluid method (VOF) is used to capture the water-air interface and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model is used for the turbulence simulation. The overset mesh method is used to capture the large motion of the hull at higher speeds. Before the extensive analysis, uncertainty analyses using various time steps and grid sizes were performed for one ship speed case of Fn = 1.19. The results of the present study are compared with those of a model test, other CFD research, and Savitsky's empirical formula. The results of the present study, following the trend of other CFD results, slightly over predict the resistance and under predict the sinkage and, more significantly, the trim.
