  • TDoA (Time Difference-of Arrival) or DoA (Direction-of-Arrival) can be used for source localization. However, the localizing performance is dependent on relative position between source and receivers, receivers' geometric structure, sound speed, and so on. In this paper we propose a source localization method with enhanced performance that combines multiple information. The proposed method uses the time TDoA, DoA and sound speed as variables. LM (Levenberg-Marquardt) method which is one of nonlinear optimizations is applied. The performances of the proposed method was evaluated by simulation. As result of simulation, the proposed method has the lower average localizing error performance than the previous method.

  • To reduce backpressure for improving engine power in exhaust system, a large difference of pressure is required, but this is in conflict with the requirement for reducing exhaust noise that needs a small pressure difference. In this paper, the controllable muffler designed by simplifying the structure of the exhaust system has a low backpressure and a proper sound specification to the rotation of engine. The exhaust system in conventional studies has been designed to have maximum noise reduction over the whole driving domain, but due to its complex structure this led to increased backpressure. If the muffler is designed according to the driving frequency, which is a dominant noise component in stationary driving speed, the backpressure is reduced due to the simplified structure of the muffler. Furthermore, a multi-mode muffler able to change structure with varied driving speed was designed.

  • Aeroacoustic sound induced from inter-couch spacing is an important contributor to interior noise generation for high speed trains. Especially the open space between mud-flap has significant impact from flow-structure interactions. To understand noise generation mechanism, experiments were performed using the wind tunnel. To find mud-flap parameters for minimal noise generations the various shape of the mud-flap was installed and its effects on the wall-pressure generation were investigated.

  • The numerical analysis of sound radiation by vibrating structure is a well known and mature technology used in many industries. Accurate methods based on the boundary or finite element method have been successfully developed over the last two decades and are now available in standard CAE tools. These methods are however known to require significant computational resources which, furthermore, very quickly increase with the frequency of interest. The low speed of most current methods is a main obstacle for a systematic use of acoustic CAE in industrial design processes. In this paper we are going to present a set of innovative techniques that significantly speed-up the calculation of acoustic radiation indicators (acoustic pressure, velocity, intensity and power; contribution vectors). The modeling is based on the well known combination of finite elements and infinite elements but also combines the following ingredients to obtain a very high performance: o a multi-frontal massively parallel sparse direct solver; o a multi-frequency solver based on the Krylov method; o the use of pellicular acoustic modes as a vector basis for representing acoustic excitations; o the numerical evaluation of Green functions related to the specific geometry of the problem under investigation. All these ingredients are embedded in the ACTRAN/AR CAE tool which provides unprecedented performance for acoustic radiation analysis. The method will be demonstrated on several applications taken from various industries.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely employed in detecting range to a target by the virtue of their low cost and simplicity. However, the sensor's measurements are corrupted by systematic errors due mainly to the dependency of sound speed upon surrounding conditions and random errors of uncertain origin. In this paper, we present the results of research carried out to reduce these errors for increasing the reliability of an untrasonic sensor system to be used in orbotic or other automated system's range finding. The sensor system designed herein is in a peuliar structure having a reference target and two receivers. Echoes from a small reference target placed at a known distance are used for compensating the variations of sound speed according to the changes of sensing conditions. Unlike existing ones, the technique proposed can compensate the effects of temperature or any other physical parameters without an additional sensor dedicated to the compensation. The measurements by two redundantly employed receivers are fused to reduce random errors in a statistical sense. The correlation of the signals from the receivers sharing a hardware in part is considered in the fusion process. The methodology desicribed in this paepr is conceptually simple, easy to be implemented, and effetive to increase the accuracy of the sensor measurements as experimental results confirm.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number of 1.5 and a Reynolds number of $10^5$ to identify the mechanism of sound radiation from the jet. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO(Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. In this simulation, optimum expansion jet is selected as a target, where the pressure at nozzle exit is equal to that of the ambient pressure, to see pure shear layer growth without effect of change in jet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. Shock waves are generated near vortex rings, and discernible pressure waves called Mach wave are radiated in the downstream direction with an angle from the jet axis, which is characteristic of high speed jet noise. Furthermore, vortex roll-up phenomena are observed through the visualization of vorticity contours.

  • In a tilting train, aluminium honeycomb composite panel is used for the high speed and light weight. Side wall of the tilting train includes the composite panel of carbon fiber, aluminium honeycomb and epoxy fiber as a main structure. In this study, we measure the transmission loss (TL) of the honeycomb composite panel and analyse the sound insulation performance by using the orthotropic plate model. We investigate experimentally how the air gap, plywood and glass wool improve the sound insulation performance of the composite panel. The purpose of the study is to provide practical information for the improvement of TL of the honeycomb composite panel used for the tilting train.

  • KITECH and ODS performed a study of internal and external noise prediction of the KHST test train. The object of this study was 3 kind of cars; trailer car(TT2), motorized car(TM1) and power car(TP1) and the predicted noise was calculated for the two different driving speeds in free field and tunnel conditions. Data of carbody design and noise sources were delivered from each manufactures. Some of noise sources which were not available in project team, were chosen by experiences of ODS. Internal noise level of each car were predicted for two cases i.e, at 300 km/h and 350 km/h. In addition sound transmission path and dominant noise sources were also investigated of each section of car, which is circular shell typed part of whole carbody. In case of TT2, the dominating sound transmission path is floor in terms or structure-borne noise and air-borne noise. The main noise sources are structure-borne noise from the yaw-damper and air-borne noise from the wheel/rail contact, whereas the dominating sound transmission path of TM1 are floor and sidewall below the window in terms of structure-borne noise. The main noise sources of TM1 are structure-borne noise from motor/gear unit and the yaw-damper in the free field, and air-borne noise from the wheel/rail contact and structure-borne noise from motor/gear unit in the tunnel. Through the external noise prediction for the KHST test train formation, the noise form the wheel/rail contact is estimated as one of the major sources. In addition, the noise specification of sub-component was proposed for managing each sub-surpplier to reach the KHST noise requirement. The specification provide the sound power of machinery part and transmission loss of component of carbody structure. The predicted noise level in each case exceeded the required limit. Through this study, the noise characteristics of the test train were investigated by simulation, and then the actual test will be performed in near future. Both measured and calculated data will be compared and further work for noise reduction will be continued.

  • In this paper, efficient and reliable methodologies for conducting sea trials to evaluate the performance of hull-mounted sonar systems is discussed. These systems undergo performance verification during ship construction via sea trials. However, the evaluation procedures often lack detailed consideration of variabilities in detection performance due to seabed topography, seasonal factors. To resolve this issue, temperature and salinity structure data were collected from 1967 to 2022 using ARGO floats and ocean observers data. The paper proposes an efficient and reliable sea trial method incorporating Bellhop modeling. Furthermore, a machine learning model applying a Physics-Informed Neural Networks was developed using the acquired data. This model predicts the sound speed profile at specific points within the sea trial area, reflecting seasonal elements of performance evaluation. In this study, we predicted the seasonal variations in sound speed structure during sea trial operations at a specific location within the trial area. We then proposed a strategy to account for the variability in detection performance caused by seasonal factors, using results from Bellhop modeling.

  • An ionization front (IF) surrounding an H II region is a sharp interface through which a cold neutral gas makes transition to a warm ionized phase by absorbing UV photons from central massive stars. We investigate the structure and instability of a plane-parallel D-type IF threaded by magnetic fields parallel to the front. We find that magnetic fields increase the maximum propagation speed of the IFs, while reducing the expansion factor, defined as the density ratio of neutral to ionized phases. IFs become unstable to distortional perturbations due to gas expansion across the fronts, exactly analogous to the Darrieus-Landau instability of ablation fronts in terrestrial flames. The growth rate of the IF instability is proportional linearly to the perturbation wavenumber as well as the upstream flow speed. The IF instability is stabilized by gas compressibility and becomes completely quenched when the front is D-critical. The instability is also stabilized by magnetic pressure when the perturbations propagate in the direction perpendicular to the fields. When the perturbations propagate in the direction parallel to the fields, on the other hand, it is magnetic tension that reduces the growth rate, completely suppressing the instability when ${\beta}$ < 1.5, with ${\beta}$ denoting the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the Alfven speed in the pre-IF region. When the front experiences an acceleration, the IF instability cooperates with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability to make the front more unstable. We discuss potential effects of IF instability on the evolution and dynamics of IFs in the interstellar medium.
