  • In many practical applications of robots, finding the location of an incoming sound is an important issue for the development of efficient human robot interface. Most sound source localization algorithms make use of only those microphones that are acoustically visible from the sound source or do not take into account the effect of sound diffraction, thereby degrading the sound source localization performance. This paper proposes a new sound source localization method that can utilize those microphones that are acoustically shadowed from the sound source. The experiment results show that use of the acoustically shadowed microphones, which receive higher signal-to-noise ratio signals than the others and are closer to the sound source, improves the performance of sound source localization.

  • The problem of sound source localization is to determine the position of sound sources using the measurement of the acoustic signals received by microphones. To develop a good sound source localization system which is applicable to a mobile platform such as robots, a time delay estimator with low computational complexity and robustness to background noise or reverberations is necessary. In this paper, an explicit adaptive time delay estimation method for a sound source localization system is proposed. Proposed explicit adaptive time estimation algorithm employs direct adaptation of the delay parameter using a transform-based optimization technique, rather than...

  • In this paper, the sound source localization system in real time which uses the time delay of arrival signal is proposed. This system uses minimum microphones and surveillance camera for estimation of the sound source localization and sound direction. To apply this system to the military field, four models(model1~model4) are derived. Model 1 can be used to evaluate the sound source localization at the long distance. Model2 and model3 can be applied to estimate the sound direction. Model4 is useful for the special purpose and potable device. It is possible for this system to be used for the military guard and surveillance. As a result of experiments, It is shown that this system can estimate the sound source localization and the sound direction using minimum microphones.

  • Recently, the necessity for sound source localization has grown significantly across various industrial sectors. Among the sound source localization methods, sound intensimetry has the advantage of having high accuracy even with a small microphone array. However, the increase in localization error at high Helmholtz numbers have been pointed out as a limitation of this method. The study proposes a method to compensate for the bias error of the measured sound intensity vector according to the Helmholtz numbers by applying deep learning. The method makes it possible to estimate the accurate direction of arrival of the source by applying a dense layer-based deep learning model that derives compensated sound intensity vectors when inputting the sound intensity vectors measured by a tetrahedral microphone array for the Helmholtz numbers. The model is verified based on simulation data for all sound source directions with 0.1 < kd < 3.0. One can find that the deep learning-based approach expands the measurement frequency range when implementing the sound intensimetry-based sound source localization method, also one can make it applicable to various microphone array sizes.

  • In this paper, we propose a virtual sound localization algorithm which improves the sound localization accuracy and sound color preservation for two channel and multi-channel surround speaker layouts. In conventional CPP laws, the sound direction is different from the panning angle and the sound color is different from real sound source especially when the speakers are spread out widely. To overcome this drawback, we design a virtual sound localization algorithm using directional psychoacoustic criteria (DPC) and sound color compensator (SCC). The analysis results show that in the case of the proposed system, the sound direction is the same as the panning angle in the audible frequency range and the sound color is less deviated from a real sound source than the conventional CPP law. In addition, its performance is verified by means of subjective tests using a real sound source.

  • In this paper, a study of advanced sound source localization is conducted by eliminating the noise of the sound source using the discrete wavelet transform. And experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed system that the mobile robot follows sound source stably. In addition, we compare the position estimation performance by applying a discrete wavelet transform to improve the reliability of the sound signal. The experimental results reveal that the de-nosing filter which removes the noise component in sound source can make the performance of position estimation more precisely and help the mobile robot distinguish the objective sound source clearly.

  • This paper proposes a new sound localization algorithm that can improve localization performance based on a tetrahedron-shaped microphone array. Sound localization system estimates directional information of sound source based on the time delay of arrival(TDOA) information between the microphone pairs in a microphone array. In order to obtain directional information of the sound source in three dimensions, the system requires at least three microphones. If one of the microphones fails to detect proper signal level, the system cannot produce a reliable estimate. This paper proposes a tetrahedron- shaped sound localization system with a coordinate transform method by adding one microphone to the previously known triangular-shaped system providing more robust and reliable sound localization. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, a real time simulation was conducted, and the results were compared to the previously known triangular-shaped system. From the simulation results, the proposed tetrahedron-shaped sound localization system is superior to the triangular-shaped system by more than 46% for maximum sound source detection.

  • It is very difficult to monitor the blind spots that are not recognized by traditional surveillance camera (CCTV) systems, and the surveillance efficiencies are very low though many accidents/events can be solved by the systems. In this paper, the fuzzy logic based sound source localization system using sound strength in the underground parking lot is suggested and the performance of the system is analyzed in order to enhance the stabilization and the accuracy of the localization algorithm in the suggested system. It is confirmed that the localization stabilization of the localization algorithm (SLA_fuzzy) using the fuzzy logic in the suggested system is 4 times higher than that of the conventional localization algorithm (SLA). In addition to this, the localization accuracy of the SLA_fuzzy in the suggested system is 29% higher than that of the SLA.

  • A variety of methods for sound source localization have been developed and applied to several applications such as noise detection system, surveillance system, teleconference system, robot auditory system and so on. In the previous work, we proposed the sound source localization using the spatially mapped GCC functions based on TDOA for robot auditory system. Performance of the proposed one for the noise effect and estimation resolution was verified with the real environmental experiment under the single source assumption. However, since multi-talker case is general in human-robot interaction, multiple source localization approaches are necessary. In this paper, the proposed localization method under the single source assumption is modified to be suitable for multiple source localization. When there are two sources which are correlated, the spatially mapped GCC function for localization has three peaks at the real source locations and imaginary source location. However if two sources are uncorrelated, that has only two peaks at the real source positions. Using these characteristics, we modify the proposed localization method for the multiple source cases. Experiments with human speeches in the real environment are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed method for multiple source localization. In the experiments, mean value of estimation error is about $1.4^{\circ}$ and percentage of multiple source localization is about 62% on average.
