  • In this study, there is an investigation about the sound quality of automotive horn that attached to luxury sedans. In order to define a questionnaire of horn sound quality the factor analysis is conducted. Ten automotive horns are selected for this research and ten passenger cars(nine is luxury sedan and one economy class car). Luxury is used for the questionnaire as an attribute for the sound quality of car horn. The interior noises for ten test cars are recorded and used for the subjective analysis of car horn sound. In the paper, new sound metric for the car horn sound is presented. The new sound metric is used for the objective sound index for the prediction of subjective sound quality of car horn.

  • Vehicles experience the impact due to harsh road conditions. Contact with a barrier on a road induces vehicles to vibrate, which brings about an impact sound. The attenuation of the impact sound is an important issue since passengers may complain about the impact noise. However, the perfect removal of impact noise is not possible as most of impact noise is caused by external conditions. It is thus necessary to make vehicles to possess more desirable sound quality characteristic of impact sound. More research is needed on objective attributes of impact sound; it is not a simple matter since impact noise is transient in nature and has a high level of sound at an instantaneous moment. A new objective attribute of impact noise is designed by using wavelet transform. Wavelet transform is appropriate for the analysis of transient signals such as impact noise. The usefulness of new objective attribute, which is a sound metric, is examined by comparison with the mean subjective rating for real impact noise of passenger cars. The new sound metric has better correlation with the mean subjective rating than already existing sound metrics

  • In previous works, psychoacoustic parameters have been used for objective quantification. However, these parameters do not agree well with subjective assessment. Therefore, the correlation between psychoacoustic parameters and the subjective rating of door closing sounds of sampled cars is low, and it is not sufficient to use psychoacoustic parameters as an objective metric to quantify the sound quality of door closing sounds. In this paper, a new method is proposed to objectively quantify the sound quality based on physiological acoustics and statistical signal processing. The gammatone filter, as a pre-processing, is used in models of the auditory system and kurtosis, which is the fourth-order moment of temporal signal, and is used to extract information about sound quality quantification for door closing sounds. The new metric obtained through the proposed method is highly correlated with subjective rating, and it is successfully applied to the quantification of the sound quality of door closing sounds.

  • Impact noise is induced in a car when it is driven on a harsh road or over some bumps. This noise occurs with the very high level of sound, which affects passengers in some way or other. Although it is impossible to clearly remove such noise, it is necessary to research an improvement in sound quality for impact noise. A new sound metric for impact sound is presented. This metric is verified by comparison between mean subjective ratings and several sound metrics. In this paper, more objective attributes are considered, which the attributes are expressing the level and modulation of sound. Three sound metrics are employed to get impact sound indexes for each course by the method of multiple linear regressions. The indexes are verified by considering the correlation between the estimated values from the multiple linear regressions and the mean subjective ratings by evaluators. Also, the subjective ratings on the indexes are estimated for the case in which some parts of suspension system are changed. The estimated ratings represent more reasonable or acceptable ratings. Thus, such indexes can be used for modification of the parts of suspension system under considering a good sound quality.

  • Aure's tonality was considered as the sound metrics for the expression of the tonality of gear whine sound in a previous research. It was failed to use the Aure's tonality as a sound metric for the tonal impression. Thus Aures's tonality, was developed for tonal impression in previous research. However, this metric did not express well the tonality of gear whine sound since the whine sound is a non-stationary signal with frequency modulation and amplitude modulation. In this study, the new method for the tonality evaluation for a non-stationary signal is presented. It is developed based on the prominence ratio, tonality impression function, and lower threshold level. It improves the accuracy and reliability of the sound quality index being used for the sound quality evaluation of the axle-gear whine sound.

  • Booming sound is one of the most important interior sound of a passenger car. The conventional booming noise research was focused on the reduction of the A-weighted sound pressure level. However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the booming sound of a passenger car. In this paper, we employed sound metric which is the subjective parameter used in psychoacoustics. (omitted)

  • The duration time of aircraft noise event is also an important factor for the evaluation of civil aircraft noise, which is considered as a notable characteristic of military aircraft noise. SEL is proved as a suitable noise metric for the measuring military aircraft noise of various flight pattern considering the duration time of noise event. This study reviews whether SEL is a suitable for measuring civil aircraft noise and study shows SEL is fairly compensating the duration time of civil aircraft noise event for the evaluation of aircraft noise. Noise metric for the evaluation aircraft noise based on SEL is more appropriate than based on $L_{MAX}$ for compensating duration time of noise event either military aircraft or civil aircraft. In this reason, current formula of WECPNL based on energy average of measured $L_{MAX}$ for the evaluation of aircraft noise impact in 'Test Method of Noise and Vibration of Korea' is recommended to be amended to formula of WECPNL based on energy average of measured SEL considering compensation of noise event duration time, if WECPNL is not based on measured EPNL, a metric compensating duration time.

However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the booming sound of a passenger car. In this paper, we employed sound metric which is the subjective parameter used in psycoacoustics. According to recent research results, the relation between sound metrics and subjective evaluation is very complex and has nonlinear characteristics. In order to estimate this nonlinear relationship, artificial neural network theory has been applied to derivation of sound quality index for booming sound of a passenger car.
