Special concern has been given to the elevated arsenic content in soils because of its high mobility and toxicity. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) which has a high anionic exchange capacity is another potential anion adsorbent for toxic anions such as arsenic, chromate and selenium etc. The uptake of arsenate from aqueous solutions by the calcined Mg-Al LDH has been investigated. The sorption capacity was about 530 mmol/kg. Sorption isotherm was defined as L-type in which arsenate was removed by LDH through anion uptake reaction. Arsenate sorption by the calcined Mg-Al LDH was occurred by reconstruction of LDH's framework. Competitive adsorption revealed that Mg-Al LDH had higher selectivity for arsenate than for sulfate. These results strongly suggest that calcined Mg-Al LDH has a promising potential for efficient removal of toxic metal oxides like arsenates from aqueous environments.
The structure of kapok fiber was characterized using FTIR and $^{13}C$-NMR spectrometers, elemental analyzer, x-ray diffractometer, SEM and IMT I-Solution ver 7.5. The kapok has a hollow tube shape and is composed of cellulose I with crystallinity of 47.95%. To develop novel oil-sorbent materials necessary to avoid the environmental pollution by spilled oil, the oil absorption capacity of various fibers such as kapok, polypropylene(PP), acryl, bamboo, cotton, rayon and wool fibers is compared in this study. The kapok fiber had the highest oil absorption capacity among the fibers and its water absorption capacity was the least. The kapok fiber selectively absorbed significant amounts of oils (43g/g of fiber for kerosene, 65g/g of fiber for soybean oil), which might be due to higher hydrophobicity of the kapok fiber, suggesting that kapok fiber may have high potential as excellent oil-absorbent materials.

Some sorption behaviors of U(VI) ion on Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin were investigated. This chelating resin was synthesized by the diazonium coupling of Amberlite XAD-2 resin with Arsenzo I chelating reagent and characterized by elementary analysis method and IR spectrometry. The optimum conditions for the sorption of U(VI) ion were examined with respect to pH, U(VI) ion concentration and shaking time. Total sorption capacity of this chelating resin on U(VI) ion was 0.39mmol U(VI)/g resin in the pH range of 4.0~4.5. This chelating resin was showed increased sorption capacity on the increased pH value. It was confirmed that sorption mechanism of U(VI) ion on the Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin was competition reacting between U(VI) ion and $H^+$ ion. Breakthrough volume and overall capacity of U(VI) ion measured by column were was 600 ml and 0.38 mmol U(VI)/g resin, respectively. The desorption of U(VI) ion was showed recovery of 90~96% using 3M $HNO_3$ and 3M $Na_2CO_3$ as a desorption solution. The separation and concentration of U(VI) ion from natural water and sea water was performed successfully by Arsenazo I-XAD-2 chelating resin.
This study has been assessed the influence of applying sewage sludge to soil amendments on the sorption properties, and leaching potential of three commonly used organophosphorus pesticides, Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. A sandy soil with a low content of organic carbon was treated with sewage sludge with a ratio sandy soil sludge ratio of 30:1. The sorption was determined with the batch equilibrium technique. The sorption isotherms could be described by Freundlich equation. The Freundlich constant, K value which measures sorption capacity, were 3.97, 9.94, 22.48 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, Chlorpyrifos in non-amended soil. But in amended soil, K value was 12.58, 28.47, and 61.21 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. The overall effect of sewage sludge addition to soil was to increase pesticides adsorption, due to the high sorption capacity of the organic matter. The effect of sludge on the leaching of pesticides in the soil was studied using packed soil columns. Total recoveries of pesticides in soil and leachate with leaching in soil column, were in the range of about 73∼84%, was reduced with the passage of time. Diazinon moved more rapidly than Chlorpyrifos in the unamended soil due to greater sorption and lower water solubility of Chlorpyrifos. Total amounts of pesticides leached from the sewage sludge amended soils were significantly reduced when compared with unamended soils. This reduction may be mainly due to and increase in sorption in amended soils, as a consequence of the increase in the organic matter content.

Magnetic nano-based sorbents have been synthesized for the recovery of two rare earth elements (REE: Nd(III) and Yb(III)). The magnetic nano-based particles are synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal procedure involving co-precipitation under thermal conditions of Fe(III) and Fe(II) salts in the presence of chitosan. The composite magnetic/chitosan material is crosslinked with epichlorohydrin and modified by grafting alanine and serine amine-acids. These materials are tested for the binding of Nd(III) (light REE) and Yb(III) (heavy REE) through the study of pH effect, sorption isotherms, uptake kinetics, metal desorption and sorbent recycling. Sorption isotherms are well fitted by the Langmuir equation: the maximum sorption capacities range between 9 and 18 mg REE $g^{-1}$ (at pH 5). The sorption mechanism is endothermic (positive value of ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and contributes to increase the randomness of the system (positive value of ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$). The fast uptake kinetics can be described by the pseudo-second order rate equation: the equilibrium is reached within 4 hours of contact. The sub-micron size of sorbent particles strongly reduces the contribution of resistance to intraparticle diffusion in the control of uptake kinetics. Metal desorption using acidified thiourea solutions allows maintaining sorption efficiency for at least four successive cycles with limited loss in sorption capacity.
In this study, a nickel hexacyanoferrate and manganese dioxide-polyacrylonitrile (NM-PAN) composite was synthesized and used for the sorptive removal of Co2+, Sr2+, and Cs+ Cs+ in radioactive laundry wastewater. Single- and multi-solute competitive sorptions onto NM-PAN were investigated. The Freundlich (Fr), Langmuir (Lang), Kargi-Ozmıhci (K-O), Koble-Corrigan (K-C), and Langmuir-Freundlich (Lang-Fr) models satisfactorily predicted all the single sorption data. The sorption isotherms were nonlinearly favorable (Freundlich coefficient, NF = 0.385-0.426). Cs+ has the highest maximum sorption capacity (qmL = 0.855 mmol g-1) for NM-PAN compared to Co2+ and Sr2+, wherein the primary mechanism was the physical process (mainly ion-exchange). The competition between the metal ions in the binary and ternary systems reduced the respective sorption capacities. Binary and ternary sorption models, such as the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model coupled with single sorption models of IAST-Fr, IAST-K-O, IAST-K-C and IAST-Lang-Fr, were fitted to the experimental data; among these, the IAST-Freundlich model showed the most satisfactory prediction for the binary and ternary systems. The presence of cationic surfactants highly affected the sorption on NM-PAN due to the increase in distribution coefficients (Kd) of Co2+ and Cs+.
The aim of this study is to investigate the sorption/ion exchange of radioactive nuclides such as $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$ by synthetic Na-micas. In order to prepare Na-micas, two natural micas (phlogopite and biotite) were used as precursor materials. XRD, SEM, and EDS analyses were used to examine material characterization of synthetic Na-micas. Analyses of materials revealed that Na-micas were successfully obtained from natrual micas by K removal treatment. On the other hand, single solute (Cs or Sr) and bi-solute (Cs/Sr) sorption experiments were carried out to determine sorption capacity of Na-micas for Cs and Sr under different pH and ionic strength conditions. Uptake of Cs and Sr by micas in bi-solute system was lower than in single-solute system. Additionally, Langmuir and Langmuir competitive models were applied to describe sorption isotherm of Na-micas. bi-solute system was well described by Langmuir competitive models. For the results obtained in this study, Na-micas could be promising sorbents to treat multi-radioactive species from water and groundwater.
The aim of this work was to investigate the adsorption isotherm and kinetic model for the biosorption of lead $(Pb^{2+})$ by Rhodotorula aurantiaca and to examine the environmental factors for this metal removal. Within five minutes of contact, $Pb^{2+}$ sorption reached nearly 86% of the total $Pb^{2+}$ sorption. The optimum initial pH value for removal of $Pb^{2+}$ was 5.0. The percentage sorption increased steeply with the biomass concentration up to 2 g/l and thereafter remained more or less constant. The Langmuir sorption model provided a good fit throughout the concentration range. The conformity of these data to the Langmuir model indicated that biosorption of $Pb^{2+}$ by R. aurantiaca could be characterized as a monolayer, single-site type phenomenon with no interaction between ions adsorbed in neighboring sites. The maximum $Pb^{2+}$ sorption capacity $(q_{max})$ and Langmuir constant (b) were 46.08 mg/g of biomass and 0.04 l/mg, respectively. The pseudo second-order equation was well fitted to the experimental data. The correlation coefficients for the linear plots of t/q against t for the second-order equation were 0.999 for all the initial concentrations of biosorbent for contact times of 180 min. The theoretical $q_{eq}$ value was very close to the experimental $q_{eq}$ value.
Emission of hazardous and volatile organic chemicals from solid waste landfill site was become to important issue because of environmental pollution and health risk by such chemicals. Laboratory batch and continuous experiments were conducted respectively to elucidate isothermal sorption behaviors and transport phenomena(by gas through unsaturated solid waste layer) in wet solid waste-gas system. Source separated and size reduced refuse(bulky waste) and incinerated ash were used after controlling water content, and trichloroethylene(TCE) was chosen among many such chemicals because of it's generality among those man-created pollutants. Isothermal TCE sorption equilibria wet solid waste-gas system can be described in linear equation and partition coefficient in this system can be estimated approximately by the simple equation derived from schematic structure of the system. Transport equation modified by instantaneous equilibrium sorption fraction and kinetic sorption rate(overall mass transfer capacity coefficient) simulated well the column experiment results.

Natural green rust (GR) can retard the migration of anions through geological media because it has a Layer Double Hydroxyl (LDH) structure with a positive charge. In this study, the sorption behaviors of anions such as selenite ($Se(IV)O{_3}^{2-}$), selenate ($Se(VI)O{_4}^{2-}$), and iodide ($I^-$) onto green rusts with different structures, i.e., GR($Cl^-$) and GR($CO{_3}^{2-}$), were investigated by conducting batch sorption experiments in an anoxic condition. Experimental results showed that selenite was mostly sorbed onto GR($CO{_3}^{2-}$) and then partly reduced to metal selenium, Se(0). However, little selenate and iodide was sorbed onto GR($CO{_3}^{2-}$) while some iodide was sorbed onto GR($Cl^-$). It is presumed from the experimental results that the major sorption mechanism of $SeO{_3}^{2-}$ and $I^-$ onto green rusts is the anion exchange reaction with the anions existing in the interlayer of the rusts. Green rust, therefore, can play an important role in the retardation of anions migrating through deep geological environments owing to its LDH structure with a high anion exchange capacity.
