Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was investigated as a method for removing lipids and bad flavor from tuna viscera. To find the optimum conditions, different experimental variables, such as pressure, temperature, flow rate of solvent and sample size, were evaluated for the effective removal of lipids and the undesirable smell. Ethanol was used as the entrainer, with a $3\%$ by vol $CO_2$ flow rate. By increasing the pressure at constant temperature, the efficiency of the lipid removal was improved and the protein was concentrated without denaturalization. The main fatty acids extracted from the tuna viscera were palmitic acid (16:0), heptadecanoic acid (17:1), oleic acid (18:1) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6). The major amino acids in the tuna viscera treated by supercritical carbon dioxide were glutamic acid, leucine and lysine, and the free amino acids were L-proline, taurine and L-$\alpha$-aminoadipic acid.

Multi-pole anisotropic Sr-ferrite sintered magnets has been studied by powder injection molding under applied magnetic field. The orientation of anisotropic Sr-ferrite powders higher than 80% during injection molding is achieved at the following conditions; apparent viscosity lower then 2500 poise in 1000 $sec^{-1}$ shear rate and applied magnetic field higher then 4 kOe. For the high fluidity and strength of injection molded compact, and the effective binder removal without defects during solvent extraction and thermal debinding, the optimum multi-binder composition is paraffin wax(PW)/carnauba wax(CW)/HDPE = 50/25/25 wt%. The rate of binder removal is proportional to the mean particle size of Sr-ferrite powders whereas it is inversely proportional to the content of Sr-ferrite powders and the sample thickness. The high magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite sintered magnets are; 3.8 kG of remanent flux density, 3.4 kOe of intrinsic coercivity, and 1.2 kG of surface flux density (l-mm-thick) in the direction of applied magnetic field.
Pretreatment of wastepaper using aqueous glycerol was investigated to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis. The effects of four factors (solid/liquid ratio, glycerol concentration, acid concentration, and reaction time) on the dissolution yield, the removal of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and the enzymatic digestibility were examined at $150^{\circ}C$. The 1/8 of solid/liquid was determined to perform the reaction uniformly, and the 93% of glycerol concentration was found to be a minimum concentration to conduct the reaction under atmospheric pressure. Also, it was found that the acid concentration and reaction time were strongly related to the dissolution yield and the removal of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, but moderately to the enzymatic digestibility. At an optimum condition of $150^{\circ}C$, 1 h and 1% acid concentration, 56% and 49% of hemicellulose and lignin, respectively, were removed, while only 4% of cellulose was removed. The enzymatic digestibility at this condition was 86%, meaning that 83% of the glucan present in the initial substrate was converted to glucose. Compared to glycerol with ethylene glycol as a pretreatment solvent, glycerol is much cheaper than ethylene glycol, but ethylene glycol is superior to glycerol in delignification.

Electro-thermal production of white phosphorus(WP, P4) generates substantial amount of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorus contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations in the United States. In this study, two different methods for treatment of phosphorus sludge were investigated. These were bulk removal of WP by physical separation(froth flotation) and transformation of WP to oxyphosphorus compounds by air oxidation in the sludge medium. Kerosene, among other collectors, resulted in selective flotation of WP from the associated mineral gangue. Solvent action of kerosene occurring on the WP surface(by rendering WP particles hydrophobic) might produce the high selectivity of WP. The WP recovery in the froth was 79.3% from a sludge assaying 34.2% of WP. In the oxidation study, air gas was dispersed in the sludge medium by the rapid rotation of the impeller blades. The high level of sludge agitation intensity caused a fast completion of the oxidation reactions and it resulted in the high percentage conversion of WP to PO4-3 with PO3-3 making up almost all portion of oxyphosphorus compounds. The WP analysis on the treated sludge showed that supernatant solution and solid residue contained an average of 4.2 μg/L and 143 ppm respectively from the sludge containing about 26 g of WP. Further investigation will be required on operational factors to better understand the processes and achieve an optimum condition.

Catalytic ozonation of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) has been examined over mesoporous MnOx/Al2O3 (MA) catalysts developed by a solvent deficient method using two different manganese precursors including manganese chloride (C) and manganese sulfate (S) at room temperature. The maximum catalytic activities of MA with C (MEK removal efficiency and ozone decomposition of 98.4 and 93.7%, respectively) were higher than those of MA with S (MEK removal efficiency and ozone decomposition of 96 and 68%, respectively). Also the catalytic stability of MA with C was much higher than that of MA with S. The physico-chemical properties of catalysts are well correlated with the activity results, which confirmed that fine dispersion of MnOx species with high ratios of Mn3+/Mn4+ and more acid sites are attributed to the higher catalyst stability for the MA-C catalyst.

This study examined the treatment characteristics of hard-to-degrade pollutants such as TCE which are found in organic solvent and cleaning wastewater by nZVI that have excellent oxidation and reduction characteristics. In addition, this study tried to find out the degradation characteristics of TCE by Fenton-like process, in which $H_2O_2$ is dosed additionally. In this study, different ratios of nZVI and $H_2O_2$, such as 1.0 mM : 0.5 mM, 1.0 mM : 1.0 mM, and 1.0 mM : 2.0 mM were used. When 1.0 mM of nZVI was dosed with 1.0 mM of $H_2O_2$, the removal efficiency of TOC was the highest and the first order rate constant was also the highest. When 1mM of nZVI was dosed with 0.5 mM of $H_2O_2$, the first order rate constant and removal efficiency were the lowest. The size of first order rate constant and removal efficiency was in the order of nZVI 1.0 mM : $H_2O_2$ 1.0 mM > nZVI 1.0 mM : $H_2O_2$ 2.0 mM > nZVI 1.0 mM : $H_2O_2$ 0.5 mM > $H_2O_2$ 1.0 mM > nZVI 1.0 mM. It is estimated that when 1.0 mM of nZVI is dosed with 1.0 mM of $H_2O_2$, $Fe^{2+}$ ion generated by nZVI and $H_2O_2$ react in the stoichiometric molar ratio of 1:1, thus the first order rate constant and removal efficiency are the highest. And when 1.0 mM of nZVI is dosed with 2.0 mM of $H_2O_2$, excessive $H_2O_2$ work as a scavenger of OH radicals and excessive $H_2O_2$ reduce $Fe^{3+}$ into $Fe^{2+}$. As for the removal efficiency of TOC in TCE by simultaneous dose and sequential dose of nZVI and $H_2O_2$, sequential dose showed higher first order reaction rate and removal efficiency than simultaneous dose. It is estimated that when nZVI is dosed 30 minutes in advance, pre-treatment occurs and nanoscale $Fe^0$ is oxidized to $Fe^{2+}$ and TCE is pre-reduced and becomes easier to degrade. When $H_2O_2$ is dosed at this time, OH radicals are generated and degrade TCE actively.

The removal of iron from neodymium chloride solution was carried out by solvent extraction using Alamine 336 in kerosine. The effect of Alamine 336, hydrochloric acid and chloride ion concentrations on the extraction of Fe were studied. The results showed that Alamine 336 as an extractant for removal of iron was effective and the extraction percentage of iron was increased with increasing hydrochloric acid and chloride ion concentration in aqueous solution. The extraction of 99% of iron is attained at a ratio of A/O = 4 by distilled water. The stripping yield of iron from loaded Alamine 336 decreased with decreasing hydrochloric acid concentration in stripping solution.

This study evaluates a cleaning method to maintain and minimize the change of blood soil for the selective removal of stains from textiles with historical significance and special meaning. Cotton and silk fabrics were soiled with blood, aged artificially and then washed by wet cleaning or dry cleaning (water, nonionic surfactant; Triton, natural surfactant; saponin, organic solvent; n-Decane). The washed fabrics were stored at room temperature for four years. The change of the blood soil was evaluated by SEM, weight, thickness, and color differences. Subsequently, the shape and the amount of blood adsorption on the fabric varied depending on fiber type and fabric structure characteristics; in addition, long term storage affected changes to blood soil. It was difficult to remove artificially aged blood soil from fabrics by wet or dry cleaning. However, the changes of the blood soil by these cleanings can be explained by the changes on SEM, weight, thickness and fabric color. The changes (especially color) showed over time. Wet cleaning showed that the changes of those factors were slightly lower than those by dry cleaning.
Petcokes is the final product obtained from a refinery process. This petcokes includes high percentage of inorganic and sulfur compounds. Currently, the petcokes produced from domestic refinery plants include more than 6% of sulfur. To use petcokes as valuable raw materials, the weight percentage of sulfur must be lower than 2% of sulfur. Solvent extraction, thermal desulfurization, and hydro-desulfurization have been used to remove the sulfur. In this study, we attempted new approach to remove the sulfur introducing microwave energy. Microwave increase the reaction rates by providing the fast heating and disconnecting the bonding structure of the molecules. The experiments of microwave thermal desulfurization and microwave plus hydrogen gas were carried out to remove the sulfur. We obtained 68.3% of sulfur removal rate with the 2 hours of reaction time and 1835 W of microwave powder. In the experiment of microwave with hydrogen gas, we obtained 86.4% of sulfur removal rate with the 1.5 hours of reaction time and 1835 W of microwave power. If we increase reaction time or decrease the particle size of petcokes, we expect more than 90% of sulfur removal.
