In this work ursolic acid (UA), a poorly water-soluble compound, was inclusion complexed with 2-hydroxypropyl-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (HP-$\beta$-CD) by various methods such as kneading, solvent evaporation and two types of supercritical fluid processes. The solubility and characteristics of these UA/HP-$\beta$-CD complexes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and HPLC. The water solubilities of the two complexes obtained from solvent evaporation and ASES processes were observed to increase up to 6$\sim$240 folds and 12$\sim$56 folds, respectively, compared with that of unprocessed UA. The stability of UA/HP-$\beta$-CD complex samples in cosmetic formulations was examined at various temperatures for one month. The UA/HP-$\beta$-CD complex prepared by solvent evaporation was found to be most stable among all the cosmetic formulations tested in our experiments.

Zaltoprofen loaded polyoxalate (POX) microspheres were prepared by an emulsion solvent-evaporation/extraction method like oil-in-water (O/W) for sustained release of zaltoprofen. The influence of several preparation parameters such as fabrication temperature, stirring speed, intensity of the sonication, initial drug ratio, molecular weight ($M_w$) of POX, concentration of POX and concentration of emulsifier has been investigated on the zaltoprofen release profiles. Physicochemical properties and morphology of zaltoprofen loaded POX microspheres were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Through the analyzed results, it was demonstrated that the characteristics of the microspheres greatly affected by the prepared condition. The releases behavior of zaltoprofen was investigated for 10 days in vitro. It was confirmed that the release behavior of zaltoprofen can be controlled by the manufacturing factor of solvent-evaporation/extraction method.

In this paper, a trade-off design and fabrication of IPMC(Ionic Polymer Metal Composites) as an actuator for a flapping device have been described. Experiments for the internal solvent loss of IPMCs have been conducted for various combinations of cation and solvent in order to find out the best combination of cation and solvent for minimal solvent loss and higher actuation force. From the experiments, it was found that IPMCs with heavy water as their solvent could operate longer. Relations between length/thickness and tip force of IPMCs were also quantitatively identified for the actuator design from the tip force measurement of 200, 400, 640, and $800{\mu}m$ thick IPMCs. All IPMCs thicker than $200{\mu}m$ were processed by casting $Nafion^{TM}$ solution. The shorter and thicker IPMCs tended to generate higher actuation force but lower actuation displacement. To improve surface conductivity and to minimize solvent evaporation due to electrically heated electrodes, gold was sputtered on both surfaces of the cast IPMCs by the Physical Vapor Deposition(PVD) process. For amplification of a short IPMC's small actuation displacement to a large flapping motion, a rack-and-pinion type hinge was used in the flapping device. An insect wing was attached to the IPMC flapping mechanism for its flapping test. In this test, the wing flapping device using the $800{\mu}m$ thick IPMC. could create around $10^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ flapping angles and $0.5{\sim}15Hz$ flapping frequencies by applying $3{\sim|}4V$.
Various solid structures were prepared by electrospray technique. In this process, liquid flows out from a capillary nozzle under a high electrical potential and is subjected to an electric field, which causes elongation of the meniscus to form a jet. In our study, by controlling the amount of polyvinyl pyrrolydone in precursor solution, the jet either disrupted into droplets for the formation of spherical particles or was stretched in the electric field for the formation of fibers. During the electrospray process, the ethanol solvent was evaporated and induced the solidification of precursors, forming solid particles. The evaporation of ethanol solvent also enhanced the mass transport of solutes from the inner core to the solid shell, which facilitated fabrication of porous and hollow structure. The network structures were also prepared by heating the collector.
$TiO_2-V_2O_5$ sol was fabricated using sol-gel method and $TiO_2-V_2O_5$ thin films were fabricated using dip-coating method. $V_2O_5$ sol was added 0.01mo1e, 0.03mo1e, 0.05mo1e into $TiO_2$ sol. Viscosity of sol increased fast from about 1,000 minutes and sol began gelation from about 10,000 minutes. As a results of crystalline properties, $V_2O_5$ peaks were not found despite of $V_2O_5$ addition. Endothermic reaction occurred due to evaporation of solvent and dissociation of OH at $80^{\circ}C$. Exothermic reaction occurred due to combustion and oxidation of solvent at $230^{\circ}C$, occurred to combustion and oxidation of alkyl group at $350^{\circ}C$. Thickness of thin films increased $0.1{\sim}0.25{\mu}m$ every a dipping.
For application of a yellow pigment as food additives, stability of a water-soluble yellow pigment from Bacillus sp. PY123 was investigated. The yellow pigment from Bacillus sp. PY123 was purified with pH treatment, activated carbon and silica gel column chromatography. The partial purified yellow pigment appeared only one spot on silica gel TLC after 12 evaporation and under irradiation of UV 253nm at dark room. Rf value of the pigment was measured at 0.04 and 0.12 with development of a solvent mixture (Butanol : Acetic acid : water = 4 :1:5) and a solvent mixture (Isopropanol : Ammonia : Water = 9 :1: 2), respectively, The partial purified pigment appeared a white fluorescence under UV365nm irradiation. The partial purified yellow pigment had a main peak and a minor peak on HPLC using 20mM phosphate buffer(pH 7.0) at 1ml/min flow rate. The partial purified pigment was stable at heat treatment, acidic pH, oxide-reductants and surfactants.

In the dry-jet-wet-spinning process of a hollow fiber membrane, the polymer solution is pumped into a coaxial tube, jet spinneret. The threadline emerging from the spinneret is stabilized by an internal coagulating medium(liquid or gas) as it emerges from the jet orifice. The nascent hollow thread is further stabilized in a quench bath as shown in Fig. 1. In this scheme, three mechanism of formatiota(temperature gradient, solvent evaporation, and solvent-nonsotvent exchange) can be combined. The changes which promote stabilization often play a dominant role in determining the ultimate fiber wall structure as well. Hence, in pratice, hollow fiber stabilization and development of membrane structure are commonly inseparable. However, fiber dimension(the inside diameter and wall thickness of the hollow fiber) is mainly a rheological problem and is determined by dope pumping rate, spinneret diatance from the coagulation bath, inner coagulant flow rate, and fiber draw-rate. Besides rheological phenomena play a prominent part in the final properties of the hollow fiber.
Monodisperse spherical $SiO_2$ particles of various sizes ($\sim$350 nm and $\sim$800 nm) and size distributions were synthesized from TEOS and MTMS. The particle size and size distribution were controlled by changing the volume ratio of water to ethanol and the reaction temperature. Narrow-sized $SiO_2$ particles with $\sim$3% size distribution were obtained. Self-assembly of the $SiO_2$ particles for photonic crystals were performed by the solvent evaporation method. The number of ordered $SiO_2$ layers can be controlled by changing the amount of the dispersed $SiO_2$ volume fraction in the solvent.
