An extensive experimental survey on the retention behaviors of phenols in the binary solvent system such as methanol-water, acetonitrile-water and tetrahydrofuran-water as well as the ternary solvent system such as methanol-acetonitrile-water and methanol-tetrahydrofuran-water is presented. A linear equation, which describes the capacity factor as a function of the solvent composition in the mobile phase and is able to predict the retention behaviors of phenols, was obtained. The iso-eluotropic lines for the binary and ternary solvent system are based on the equal strength of the methanol-water solvent which shows an optimum separation of the phenols used. The specific effect of each solute in the binary solvent system appeared to be larger than those in the ternary system.

Mulberry root bark is one of potential plant sources for antioxidant materials which can be used for the relief of oxidative stress. To explore the effects of solvent type and temperature on the structural characteristics and antioxidant activity of the root bark extracts, we prepared various extracts of mulberry root bark (Morus alba L.) using 0 - 100 % ethanol (EtOH) at RT - 100℃. EtOH concentration and temperature critically affected the extraction yields, the content of bioactive components, and antioxidant activity of the extracts. Use of high content of EtOH solvent and low temperature resulted in the low extraction yield. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the extract prepared using absolute EtOH at room temperature contained polyphenols and flavonoids with the highest contents among other extracts. Interestingly, the temperature differently affected the polyphenol and flavonoid contents according to the solvent types. In the case of 30% EtOH solvent, polyphenol and flavonoid contents increased with an increase in temperature, whereas in the case of 70 and 100 % EtOH, these contents decreased. Using the radical scavenging assay, it was confirmed that the 100% EtOH extracts had higher antioxidant activity compared to distilled water (DW) extracts regardless of temperature. Also, heating might extract more antioxidant components from the root bark. Especially, the extract prepared using 30% EtOH solvent at 100℃ showed the highest antioxidant activity. Taken together, these experimental results imply that the extraction parameters should be designed carefully considering the productivity, the extracted bioactive components, and antioxidant activity.

Purpose: To derive the optimal conditions for the Rubber based colloidal suspension manufacturing process, which made using a stirrer, to apply the mixture design method. Methods: We used two process component and one process variable Mixture design to derive the optimal conditions for the process. The response variables were selected for rotational viscometer measures which can represent Rubber based colloidal suspension quality. The input variables were selected as the values of rubber-organic solvent expressed in proportions as process components and stirring amount as a process variable which are controllable factors in the process. Results: Based on the results of the experiment, rubber and organic solvent and the interaction between stirring amount and rubber and the interaction between stirring amount and rubber and organic solvent were significant. Reproducibility of the regression model was confirmed by the observation that the values obtained from the reproducibility experiment fell within the confidence interval. Additionally, the model predictions were found to be in close agreement with the field measurements. Conclusion: In this study, a regression model was developed to predict the viscosity change of colloidal suspensions based on the proportion of rubber based colloidal suspension. The developed regression model can lead to improved product quality.
Dynamics of contact ion-pair between 1, 2, 4, 5-tetracyanobenzene anion and cation of biphenyl derivatives was investigated on the picosecond time scale. Solvent effect on the electron transfer was observed and electron transfer rates were examined using Marcus equation which contains distance dependence of the electron transfer rate in the frequency factor, along with the consideration of molecular shape. From the discussion based on disk model for molecular shape, contribution of interring torsional motion of biphenyl to the inner-sphere reorganization energy is strongly suggested, which leads to the physical explanation for the observed solvent effect on the rate of electron transfer.

In this work a PMTA(poly m-phenylene terephthal amide) polymer was synthesized by using new solvent to produce film composite. This Film composite membrane based on PMTA were prepared with 1,3-phenylenediamine(MPD), terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) and Co-solvent (NMP with added $CaCl_2$) was adopted for synthesize PMTA polymer. A series of synthetic experiments were done, aimed to find the optimum condition of polymerization.
Stabilities and structures of resorcinol formaldehyde resins (RF resins) and their dependence on solvent were studied by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics. Dimers to decamers of the RF resins in the conditions of dielectric constant = 1.00, 21.01, 36.64, and 80.10 were calculated. The average distance between oxygen atoms in 1-hydroxyl groups of adjacent resorcinols of the resins became longer with increased dielectric constant of the environment. The number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the resins decreased by increasing the dielectric constant of the environment. The RF resin structure on the surface of fabric or steel cord was explained based on the present calculation.
Organic solvent-based enteric coating technology using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP) has been developed for many years due to low water solubility of HPMCP. In this work, aqueous HPMCP nanoparticles (HPMCP-NPs) were prepared by neutralization emulsification method using HPMCP powder and ammonium hydroxide (NH40H) in the absence of any organic solvent and emulsifier. Cloning and characterization of the gene encoding a solvent-tolerant protease from the haloalkaliphilic bacterium Geomicrobium sp. EMB2 are described. Primers designed based on the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified EMB2 protease helped in the amplification of a 1,505-bp open reading frame that had a coding potential of a 42.7-kDa polypeptide. The deduced EMB2 protein contained a 35.4-kDa mature protein of 311 residues, with a high proportion of acidic amino acid residues. Phylogenetic analysis placed the EMB2 gene close to a known serine protease from Bacillus clausii KSM-K16. Primary sequence analysis indicated a hydrophobic inclination of the protein; and the 3D structure modeling elucidated a relatively higher percentage of small (glycine, alanine, and valine) and borderline (serine and threonine) hydrophobic residues on its surface. The structure analysis also highlighted enrichment of acidic residues at the cost of basic residues. The study indicated that solvent and salt stabilities in Geomicrobium sp. protease may be accorded to different structural features; that is, the presence of a number of small hydrophobic amino acid residues on the surface and a higher content of acidic amino acid residues, respectively.
As part of our endeavor to increase the productivity of steroid by enzymatic transformation of corticosteroids, attempts have been made to increase the solubility of steroids by using some organic solvents. When the solubility of steroids is the rate limiting factor in the steroid transformation, it was found that the use of solvents significantly improved the yield. Hydrocorisone as a substrate and 3-ketosteroid .DELTA.$^{1}$ dehydrogense as an immobilized whole cell enzyme were employed as the model system for this study. It was found that the yield of product, prodnisolone, goes through a maximum with an increase in the solvent concentration. At a high solvent concentration, the solvent showed a toxic effect and it causes a decrease in the product yield by the second order inhibition mechanism. Among the solvents evaluated, methanol and ethanol were found to be the best. These alcohols are not only good solvents but also showed minimal toxic effect. Based on the experimental results, it was concluded that the productivity of steroid can be increased by usign well selcted solvents systems for the enzymatic transformation of steroids.
Solvent fractions were prepared from traditional herbal drugs which of methanol extracts inhibited $CCl_4$-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes and c ontinuously assayed their effects. Ethylacetate and n-buthanol fractions from Cibotii Rhizoma and chloroform fraction from Gelatina Nigra inhibited the release of LDH and GPT from $CCl_4$-treated hepatocytes, respectively. Water fraction (WAR) among solvent fractions from Astragali Radix showed the most potent inhibitory effect on the release of GOT or GPT by treatment with $CCl_4$. All of solvent fractions prepared from Eucommiae Cortex had no effect on $CCl_4$-induced cytotoxicity. Chloroform and ethylacetate fractions from Rehmanniae Radix Preparata increased the release of GPT from $CCl_4$-treated hepatocytes. n-Hexan, chloroform or ethylacetate fraction from 5 herbal drugs increased the release of LDH, GOT or GPT from normal hepatocytes at the dose of 1.Omg/ml. Administration of WAR suppressed the elevation of GOT, ALP activities and MDA contents in the serum as well as in the liver tissue of $CCl_4$-intoxicated rats. Based on these results, isolation of antihepatotoxic substances from WAR is under the process.
