The objective of this study was to determine the effect of refrigerant heat exchanger on the performance of type II absorption heat pump performance using numerical analysis. Two heat exchange installation methods were used: solution to refrigerant and waste hot water to refrigerant. These methods were compared to the standard model of hot water flow without using refrigerant heat exchanger. When waste hot waters were bypassed to refrigerant heat exchanger, COP was not affected. However, steam mass generation rates were increased compared to those of the standard model. When solutions were bypassed to the refrigerant heat exchanger, results were different depending on the place where the solution rejoined. COP and steam mass generation rates were lower compared to those when waste heat water was passed to refrigerant heat exchanger. Thus, it is possible to obtain higher steam mass generation rates by using waste water and installing refrigerant heat exchanger.
A numerical simulation on the heat transfer and flow field was carried out to improve the performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger. The steady incompressible 3-D Navier-Stokes solution is obtained with the actual operational condition and geometry of the heat exchanger. Based on this study, it is noted that the present geometry of the heat exchanger causes poor heat transfer since the air inside shell does not flow through the tube bundle, but around it. The enhancement of the heat transfer can be achieved by the variation of the design factor like the sealing strip located on the top/bottom and middle of the baffle, but it causes the increasement of the pressure drop. In this paper, the effects of the location and size of the sealing strips and flow rate through the heat exchanger on the heat transfer and pressure drop are studied.
In dynamic ice storage system(DISS), ice slurry is formed not only from solution freezing by mechanical removing parts but also supercooled solution. However, in order to perform continuous ice formation in the system without mechanical moving parts, supercooled aqueous solution should be formed stable through cooling heat exchanger and be dissolved uniformly in storage tank. In previous study, the time of ice slurry increased as the pressure of the cooling heat exchanger(PHX) increased. In this study, a cooling experiment of an ethylene glycol 7mass% solution was performed with various inlet temperature of the PHX, which has constant brine inlet temperature of $-7^{\circ}C$. The temperature in the storage tank maintained to freezing point of the solution. At results, the time of ice slurry formation increased as the supercooling degree decreased and the cooling rate increased.
A heat exchanger (100,000 W) using two-phase loop thermosyphons (TLT) was developed as a waste heat recovery system. An experimental and simulation study was carried out on the heat transfer characteristics of TLT heat exchanger, and the results from the experiments were used to see the possibility which the TLT heat exchanger could be an alternate solution for waste heat recovery system. The experimental results showed the provisional results as a waste heat recovery system. Also computer simulation code can predict the TLT system about the effects of various variables for the operation. Computer simulation results based on the thermal resistance networks were compared with the experimental results. The study clearly shows that the computer simulation for the TLT heat exchanger can Predict the most cases of the affecting parameters involved, provided that correct empirical correlations are used.
The performance of a plate heat exchanger for using liquid solution in the absorption chiller-heater was analyzed. The model was developed by using the various performance prediction correlations. The performance characteristics of the plate heat exchanger with the mass flow rate ratio was verified by using experimental data. To investigate performance of plate heat exchanger with geometry variables, the chevron angle, corrugated wave length, and corrugation depth were changed. As a result, the capacity of Kim and Martin correlation models was similar with the experimental data, and the capacity difference was less than 2%. Besides, the pressure drop of Marin correlation model showed a similar variation with experimental data, and the difference of pressure drop was less than 1.5 kPa.

Ice adhesion and blockage problems have been issued in continuous ice slurry making process. So we composed continuous ice slurry making device using a commercial small plate heat exchanger (PHX), and investigated character of ice formation. An experiment of ice formation was peformed with an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol 7 mass%. In the experiment, the effect of the pressurization on ice slurry formation during the cooling process was investigated. The pressurization test for the aqueous solution was performed by setting valves at the PHX inlet and outlet. At the results, the time of continuous ice formation increased as the pressure of the plate heat exchanger increased for cooling temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$. Also continuous ice formation at the cooling temperature of $-7^{\circ}C$ showed a possibility. It was found that the pressurization may contribute to suppress the dissolution of supercooled aqueous solution in the PHX.
The performance of various type plate exchangers with different chevron angle, dimple size and arrangement was analysed by using Ansys v13.0. Heat transfer performance, pressure drop and flow patten of plate heat exchanger were investigated according to mass flow ratio investigated and compared. As a result, the $60^{\circ}$-chevron type plate heat exchanger showed the highest heat transfer performance but pressure drop was relatively high. The efficiency of $45^{\circ}$-chevron type plate heat exchanger showed the best performance in considering of heat transfer performance and pressure drop simultaneously. Among dimple type plate heat exchangers, the highest heat transfer performance was shown in a dim_zigzag type plate heat exchanger but pressure drop was very high. Besides, the dim_upsize plate heat exchanger showed very low pressure drop.
This paper discusses the effect of varying LiBr solution circuits flow rates for a direct fired double effect commercial absorption chiller in the parallel flow configuration. The effects of solution flow rates have been investigated for generator, condenser, solution heat exchanger, absorber and evaporator. According to the result of this work, it was found that sensible heat rate of generator increases and refrigerant vapor generated in that decreases when inlet solution flow rate of that increases. As solution flow rate of absorber increases, the degree of superheat increases because of decreasing solution heat exchanger efficiency. The flashing vapor at the top of absorber increases in proportion to the degree of superheat whileas decreases cooling capacity inversely.
A simplified rotary heat-exchanger model was developed with an assumption of a linear temperature distribution along the flow direction. Based on the model, the exact fluid solution and solid temperature variations were obtained and verified from a comparison with previous numerical studies. The heat transfer in the rotary heat exchanger was investigated using the theoretical solutions. The heat exchanger's effectiveness was shown to be saturated, with a rotational-speed increase that is higher than a critical value that is solely dependent on the thermal capacity of the solid matrix but independent of the fluid flow rate; the saturated value of the effectiveness was determined only by the NTU of the heat exchanger. Where the thermal diffusivity of the solid matrix is so slight that the thermal penetration depth becomes smaller than the matrix thickness, the effective thermal capacity of the solid matrix decreased according to the penetration depth.
