  • A numerical model which simulates the flow boiling process of the ammonia/water solution within a plate type generator for ammonia/water absorption refrigerators was developed. The ammonia/water solution flows downward under gravity and the ammonia/water vapor generated by flow boiling flows upward. The heating medium flows counter to the ammonia/water solution. The flow pattern within the generator was assumed to be a bubbly flow, and the liquid and vapor phases were assumed to be saturated. It was shown that the boiling of ammonia occurred mainly in the upper part of the generator. The effects of the heating medium inlet temperature, the mass flow rate of the heating medium and the mass flow rate of ammonia/water solution into the generator on the generation of ammonia/water vapor were investigated.

  • For the study of transport phenomena of an aqueous NaCl solution through a cuprophane membrane, a new apparatus was constructed. The volumc flow rate Q, the permeability coefficient U, and the permeability constant K were measured or determined by using this apparatus. The experimental temperature range was 5 to $35^{\circ}C$, and the applied pressure increments were 10 to 40 psi. By assuming that the cuprophane membrane is composed of n parallel cylindrical capillaries of circular cross-section and that the flow of the solution through the capillaries follows the Poiseulle law, the mean radius r of the capillaries and the number n of the latter in the membrane were evaluated. By using a reasonable assumption concerning the radius ${\eta}'$ of the species diffusing through the membrane, it was concluded that the contribution of the diffusive flow to the total flow rate Q is less than 10%. Thus, the Q was treated as the rate due to the viscous flow, and the viscosity ${\eta}_m$ of the solution in the membrane phase was evaluted, and it was found that ηm is nearly equal to ${\eta}_b$, the bulk viscosity of the solution. From this fact, it was concluded that in the capillaries, no change occurs in the physical state of the NaCl solution. The value of ( = 4.27 kcal/mole) and ${\Delta}Sm^{\neq}$(4.28 eu) were obtained for the viscous flow. A possible explanation was given.

  • The three-dimensional flow analysis using the finite volume method is presented to compare the steady flow characteristics of blood with those of blood substitutes such as water and aqueous polymer solution in an idealized double branching model. The model is used to simlllate the region of the abdominal aorta near the celiac and superior mesenteric branches. Apparent viscosities of blood and the aqueous Separan solution are represented as a function of shear rate by the Carreau model, Water and aqueoiu Separan AP-273 500wppm solution are frequently used as blood substitutes in vitro experiments. Water is a typical Newtonian fluid and blood and Separan solution are non-Newtonian fluids. Flow phenomena such as velocity distribution, pressure variation and wall shear stress distribution of water, blood and polymer solution are quite different due to differences of the rheological characteristics of fluids. Flow phenomena of polymer solution are qualitatively similar to those of blood but the phenomena of water are quite different from those of blood and polymer solution. It is recommended that a lion-Newtonian fluid which exhibits very similar rheological behavior to blood be used in vitro experiments. A non-Newtonian fluid whose rheological characteristics are very similar to those of blood should be used to obtain the meaninylll hemodynamic data for blood flow in vitro experiment and by numerical analysis

  • If a part of the poor solution from the absorber outlet is recirculated to the absorber inlet, the solution temperature at the solution spray pump can be reduced, and the solution flow rate in the absorber is increased. We have performed the experiments on the influences of the absorption chiller performance according to the ratio of the recirculation, defined as the ratio of the recirculation flow rate to the total solution flow rate at the absorber outlet. As increasing the ratio of the recirculation, the absorption capacity of the solution can be deteriorated. On the other hand, due to the increasing flow rate, the heat transfer rate can be enhanced. As a result, the performance of the absorber and the cooling capacity of the absorption chiller have nothing to do with the recirculation ratio, and the lifetime of the spray pump will be maintained.

  • We consider some numerical solution methods for equilibrium equations Af + E$^{T}$ λ = r, Ef = s. Algebraic problems of this form evolve from many applications such as structural optimization, fluid flow, and circuits. An important approach, called the force method, to the solution to such problems involves dimension reduction nullspace computation for E. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the substructuring method for the solution step of the force method in the context of the incompressible fluid flow. We also suggests some iterative methods based upon substructuring scheme..

  • The flow and heat/mass transfer in the falling-film of a heat exchanger can be influenced by the motion of the surrounding refrigerant vapor. In this study, the effect of the vapor flow direction on the absorption heat transfer has been investigated for a falling-film helical coil which is frequently used as the absorber of ammonia/water absorption refrigerators. The experiments were carried out for different solution concentration. The heat and mass transfer performance was measured for both parallel and counter-current flow. The effect of vapor flow on the heat and mass transfer is found to be increased with decreasing solution concentration. In the experiments with low solution concentration, whose vapor specific volume is great, the counter-current flow of vapor resulted in uneven distribution of falling-film and reduced the heat transfer performance of the absorber. The direction of the vapor flow hardly affected the thermal performance as the solution concentration became stronger since the specific volume of the ammonia/water vapor was much smaller than that of the water vapor.

  • The simulated dyes solution containing Basic Red 46(BR 46), Yellow 21(Y 21), and Maxilon Blue 30(MB 30) were electrochemically oxidized using carbon fiber as an anode. The electrolyses were performed in a electrolytic flow cell constructed by Vycor glass tube. The carbon fiber was positioned in the inside of Vycor glass tube and platinum wire coiled around outside of tube as a cathode. Several operating variables, such as current, time, pH and flow rate of solution were studied. Increasing current density would lead to a corresponding increase in the dye removal efficiency 99.2 % at a 200 mA. The electrolyses time could also improve and removal efficiency was about 99 % after 1.5 hours of electrolyses. The removal efficiency was increased with the increase of flow rate of solution and optimum flow rate was 5 mL/min. THe pHs of solution affect the removal efficiency. The removal efficiency was decreased with the increase of pH of solution and optimum pH was 5.05 (0.1 M $KNO_3$).

  • Absorption performance at the vertical interface between refrigerant vapor and liquid solution of $LiBr-H_{2}O$ solution was enhanced by the waves formed due to the interfacial shear stress. The present study investigated experimentally and analytically the improvements of absorption performance in a falling film by wavy film flow. The dynamic parameter was the film Reynolds numbers ranged from 50 to 150. The energy and diffusion equations were solved simultaneously to find the temperature and concentration profiles at the interface of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor. Absorption characteristics due to heat and mass transfer were analyzed for the falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by refrigerant vapor in the absorber. Absorption performance showed a peak value at the solution flow rate of $Re_{f}>100$. Absorption performance for the wavy film flow was found to be greater by approximately 10% than that for uniform film flow. Based on numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was obtained for the wavy flow caused by spring insert. The difference between the measured and the predicted results were ranged from 5.8 to 12%.

  • In this study, a modified reverse flow type, one of the triple effect absorption cycles, is studied for performance improvement. The cycle simulation is carried out by using EES(Engineering Equation Solver) program for the working fluid of $H_2O/LiBr$ solution. The split-ratios of solution flow rate, UA of each component, pumping mass flow rate of solution are considered as key parameters. The results show that the optimal SRH (split ratio of high side) and SRL (split ratio of low side) values are 0.596 and 0.521, respectively. Under these conditions, the COP is maximized to 2.1. The optimal pumping mass flow rate is selected as 3 kg/s and the corresponding UAEV A is 121 kW/K in the present system. The present simulation results are compared to the other literature results from Kaita's (2002) and Cho's (1998) triple effect absorption systems. The present system has a lower solution temperature and a higher COP than the Kaita's modified reverse flow, and it also gives a higher COP than the Cho's parallel flow by adjusting split ratios.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the relationship between wood anatomy and the water flow path in P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis. through the experiment of penetration of the dye solution. The experiment was performed by permeating 1% acid, alkali and direct solution into the xylem just after being cut. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. In P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis, the dye solution penetrated into sapwood and annual rings adjacent to cambial zone were only dyed according to ascent of tree height. 2. The penetrability of latewood was better than that of earlywood. 3. In P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis, the main water flow path in longitudinal direction was the trachied and that in transverse direction was ray trachied and ray parenchyma. Also, the dye solution was found in resin canal. 4. P. koraiensis was more permeable than L. leptolepis. 5. Among the acid, alkali and direct dye solution, the acid dye solution was the most permeable.
