  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus(SRP) contents from hanwoo manure using probiotics to feed and manure additives during 5 weeks. A total of 45 hanwoo(24 months old) with averaging $580{\pm}20$ kg in weight were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments with 3 replicates per treatment(5 hanwoo per pen, $5{\times}8m$). The treatment were supplemented, control, T1(10 kg roughage + 2 kg concentrate(2% probiotics as-fed basis)), and T2(10 kg roughage + 2 kg concentrate(2% probiotics as-fed basis) + 7 kg probiotics on the surface of hanwoo manure (top-dressing)). During the experimental period, there were statistically significant differences(P<0.05) in pH values at 3 and 5 weeks; TN contents at 5 weeks; and SRP contents at 5 weeks in all treatments. Adding probiotics to feed or feed and manure increased manure pH in comparison with controls. As time increased, changes in TN contents decreased in the order: T2 > Control > T1. Especially, the reduction in SRP contents in all treatments at 5 weeks was in following order: T1 > T2 > Control. This result suggests that it is possible to make efficient use of probiotics as feed and manure additives for reducing environmental pollution or to provide fundamental information on livestock managements to producers.

  • Water culture studies were conducted in the greenhouse with mulberry plants to investigate the nutrient uptake, especially Zn and Cu, under high phosphrous concentration. Mulberry plants were grown with five phosphorus levels(0, 0.2, 0.5, 2.0, 5.0 mM). Leaves and roots were analyzed for water content, total nitrogen, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, total Zn, soluble Zn, Cu, Cl, $NO_3HPO_4$ and $SO_4$. Dry matter increased upto 2.0mM phosphorus level, and then decreased. Water content, total nitrogen, P, K, and Fe in leaves increased with increasing phosphorus level. Total Zn content in leaves showed little change, whereas soluble Zn increased and Cu decreased with increasing phosphorus level. With increasing phosphous level. $SO_4$ and Cl decreased and then sharply increased above 2.0mM phosphorus. Lower uptake of Cu and higher uptake of $SO_4$ and Cl suggest a cause of mulberry yield decline with high accumulation of soil phosphorus.

  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the phosphorus status and define the relationship between composition of phosphorus forms and available phosphorus with 149 phosphorus accumulated soil samples. Distribution percentage of inorganic, organic and available phosphorous to total phosphorus were 68.9 (Saloid-p 2.7, Al-p 26.4, Fe-p 27.6, Ca-p 12.2%), 6.7 and 26.0%, respectively. In the relationship between available phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus in soil, Al-p, Saloid-P, and Ca-P showed significant correlation with available phosphorus which did not showed significant one with Fe-p. Multiple liner regression equation between available and inoganic phosphorus abtained as follow, $Av.P=81.694+0.858Sa-p^{***}+0.648Al-p^{***}+0.091Ca-p^{**}(R=0.826^{***})$ and contribution rates of Saloid-p, Al-p, and Ca-p to available phosphorus were 26.1, 65.2, and 8.7%, respectively. Relationship between available and water soluble phosphorus, water soluble phosphorus and $0.01M-CaCl_2-p$ were highly significant, respectively, and soil solution P extracted with $0.01M-CaCl_2$ for 30 minutes was selected as one of usable diagnostic techniques for soil P status.

  • Among the major nutrients, phosphorus is by far the least mobile and available to plants in most soil conditions. A large portion of soluble inorganic phosphate applied to soil in the form of phosphate fertilizers is immobilized rapidly and becomes unavailable to plants. To improve the plant growth and yield and to minimize P loss from soils, the ability of a few soil microorganisms converting insoluble forms into soluble forms for phosphorus is an important trait in several plant growth-promoting microorganisms belonging to the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas and the fungi belonging to the genera Penicillium and Aspergillus in managing soil phosphorus. The principal mechanism of solubilization of mineral phosphate by phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is the release of low molecular weight organic acids such as formic, acetic, propionic, lactic, glycolic, fumaric, and succinic acids and acidic phosphatases like phytase synthesized by soil microorganisms in soil. Hydroxyl and carboxyl groups from the organic acids can chelate the cations bound to phosphate, thereby converting it into soluble forms.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in inorganic phosphorus fractions in phosphorus accumulated plastic film house soils under cropping condition. Pot experiment was conducted with surface soils taken from plastic film house fields cultivated for 3, 8 and 16 years. Phosphorus fertilizer was applied at the rates of 0 (P0), $100kg\;ha^{-1}$ (recommended application rate. P1) and $200kg\;ha^{-1}$ (P2) as fused phosphate. Crops were grown sequentially in the order of corn-Chinese cabbage-Chinese cabbage-corn for 3 years. The content of easily soluble-P fraction was decreased with cropping. There were significantly positive relationship not only between the contents of easily soluble-P and the amounts of soil available P ($r=0.839^{**}{\sim}0.952^{**}$ for Bray-1 P, $r=0.895^{**}{\sim}0.967^{**}$ for Lancaster P, and $r=0.491^{**}{\sim}0.821^{**}$ for Olsen P), but also between the amounts of P absorbed by plants and the amounts of easily soluble P decreased ($r=0.644^{**}{\sim}0.822^{**}$). The decrease of easily soluble-P during cropping period could be described by a first-order reaction. The number of cropping times needed to decrease the content of easily soluble-P to an index level of $0.2mg\;kg^{-1}$, which is commonly reported as the desired concentration for soil P, was predicted in the range of 26~33 cropping times by using the equations. Regardless of P fertilization, the proportion of Al-P to total P was little varied during cropping period, but the proportion of Fe-P to total P increased with cropping. Although the content of Ca-P was high before cropping, the proportion of Ca-P to total P was increased with cropping. The proportion of reductant soluble-P to total P was little varied for P fertilizer treatment but was increased for no P fertilizer treatment. The residual-P was decreased during cropping period due to the absorption by crops and the conversion to other inorganic P fractions.

  • In this study small glass columns with 2.5cm inner diameter and 24.5cm length were used as many as the sample numbers to study the effects of initial pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, and sediment depth on the release of phosphorus from lake sediment. No phosphorus release occurred at $10^{\circ}C$ with all pHs, and release rate at $25^{\circ}C$ was higher than that at $35^{\circ}C$ with pH 4 and reverse trends were observed at pH 7 and 10. Under all conditions, DO concentrations were decreased and equilibrium was obtained after 4-8 days when phosphorus release started and the Do concentrations were less than 1 mg/l. Sediment depth had little effect on phosphorus release rate. It was found that relation between released SRP(Soluble Reactive Phosphorus) concentration and time was zero order reaction and reaction rate coefficients were obtained. The amount of phosphorus release from lake sediment can be predicted by considering these k values.

  • Removal of phosphate from soil by leaching, runoff, and plant uptake is strongly influenced by the content and absorption characteristics of P in soil. In this study the relationships between water soluble phosphate and phosphate retention capacity of the soil was investigated. Water soluble and available phosphate, and phosphate absorption characteristics of 35 paddy soils were measured during incubation at $25^{\circ}C$. Water soluble phosphate content was highly correlated with available phosphate content, phosphorus absorption capacity (PAC), and phosphate absorbed (PS) in air-dried and wet soils. The most significant relationship was found between water soluble phosphate and the ratio of available phosphate and phosphate sorbed, and the relationship $0.01M\;CaCl_2-P=0.0828$ (Av. $P_2O_5/PS$)+0.0374 could be suggested for the estimation of water soluble phosphate from soil phosphorus characteristics.

  • This study is done to prove the premise that both alkalinity and hardness affect on the dissolved phosphorus concentration so that the growth of algae is also affected in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Statistical analysis of the water quality data of 13 reservoirs collected for the last decade shows the relations between alkalinity and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and between hardness and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ are not linear but follow second order equation. This relation seems to be due to two antagonistic effects accompanying a simultaneous increase in alkalinity and hardness. The increase stimulates the growth of algae by supplying carbonates and $Ca^{2+}$ to algae and at same time it causes a decrease in soluble phosphorus which retards algae to grow. These opposing tendencies are confirmed by theoretical calculations with the MINTEQ model. There seems to be ranges of alkalinity and hardness that are in favor of algae growth; the ranges are less than 44 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in alkalinity and also less than 63 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in hardness. This finding will provide a solid base to develop an effective water quality management of water bodies.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the removal behaviors of DOM(dissolved organic matter) and phosphorus in eutrophic lake water by coagulation process with PAC(powdered activated carbon). It was observed that the removal characteristic of soluble matter was different from that of dissolved one, and the removal of DOM was effected by both pH and coagulant dosage. It was founded that PAC could increase the removal efficiency by an adsorption of DOM in coagulation process. A formation of soluble and colloidal matters resulted in the degradation of phosphorus removal efficiency in a chemical precipitation process. The phosphorus removal efficiency could be enhanced by an absorption of colloidal matter and dissolved complex with PAC addition. In addition, the PAC addition caused the increase of floc density in coagulation process, that led to the rise of sedimentation rate, and resulted in a significant improvement of solid-liquid separation efficiency.
