  • The objectives of this study were both to evaluate the level and correlations of hazardous agents and to suggest measures to control industrial hygiene problems caused by using water-soluble metalworking f1uids(MWF). Geometric mean of formaldehyde(0.039 ppm) was higher than criteria of NIOSH(0.016ppm). Formaldehyde, originally existed in the biocide, is released and used to kill microbes in soluble MWF. Microbe concentrations were above $10^4No./mL$ in 14 MWF tanks among 20 tanks surveyed. Nitrosamines that is formed by reaction of nitrosating group and amines was detected to $18.4-47.1{\mu}g/m^3$. Formaldehyde concentration was low when microbes were abundant(r=-0.67, p=0.011), and high when open tank area was wide(r=0.75. p=0.012). The significant relationship between pH and microbes(r=-0.76. p=0.003) was also observed. The predominant bacteria species in MWF were Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp., Comamonas testosteroni, Acinetobacter haemolyticus, Bordertella bronchiseptica in order. Therefore, hazardous agents emitted by using water-soluble MWF seems to be correlated microbial growth. In order to minimize worker's exposure to several hazardous agents by an water-soluble MWF and to increase productivity, microbial growth must be controlled to the lowest level as possible. Administrative control as well as engineering control must comprehensively be applied to control microbe's growth in water-soluble MWF.

  • Background and Objectives: YKL-40 is considered to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this study, the effect of serum 25(OH) vitamin D [25(OH)VitD] differences between groups on YKL-40 was evaluated on a hypercholesterolemia rat model. Methods: Thirty-two male rats (wistar albino) were equally divided into 4 groups. The first group was the control group; the second group was high-cholesterol (H-CH) adequate vitamin D (VitD) group (H-AdeVD). The third group was the H-CH deficient VitD group (H-DefVD), and the last group was designed with the H-CH supplement VitD (H-SupVD). The feeding process consisted of 2 stages. At the first stage (5 months), the H-DefVD group was fed on VitD deficient chow, while the other groups (control, H-AdeVD, H-SupVD) were fed on standard chow. At the second stage (3 months), the H-AdeVD and the H-SupVD groups were fed on the H-CH chow, whereas the H-DefVD group was fed on the H-CH-VitD deficient chow. Moreover, the H-SupVD group was given 100 IU/kg/day VitD along with the H-CH chow. Results: Compared with the control group, interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), and YKL-40 values in the H-DefVD groups increased significantly (p<0.001, p<0.001, p=0.009, p=0.005; sequentially). Conclusion: It can be concluded that VitD can suppress the YKL-40, thus, it will prevent CVD development in rat. Therefore, further clinical studies related with human will reveal the effect of VitD and YKL-40 on CVD development.

  • Purpose: Obesity is related to systemic inflammatory processes causing cardiovascular complications. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), CD40 ligand (CD40L), P-selectin are newly described mediators of inflammation and have a significant effect in atherosclerosis. Adiponectin has shown anti-inflammatory effects in adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between adiponectin and inflammatory mediators in children and adolescents. Methods: Fifty children or adolescents, twenty two with a body mass index (BMI) over 95th percentile, and twenty eight with a BMI below 75th percentile were included in the study. Serum soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1), P-selectin, CD40L, lipid profiles, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glucose and insulin were measured to evaluate associations with adiponectin. Comparison of these variables was performed between the obese and the nonobese group. Results: We found a adiponectin to be significant lower and sICAM-1 significant higher in the obese group compared to the nonobese group, but there were no significant differences in P-selectin and soluble CD40L. Adiponectin was negatively associated with ICAM-1 and P-selectin in the obese group. Conclusion: Negative associations of adiponectin with ICAM-1 and P-selectin in obese children and adolescents suggest that serum adiponectin level may represent the inflammatory status.

  • This study compared Ojeok-san (Wuji-san in Chinese) decoctions produced using different extraction methods for variable times. Decoctions were extracted in pressurized or non-pressurized conditions for 60, 120, and 180 mins. We investigated the Ojeok-san extract yield, the total soluble solid content, the hydrogen ion concentration (pH), and the reference compound content. The extract yield and the total soluble solid content were higher in decoctions produced by non-pressurized extraction; both were proportional to the extraction time. The pH tended to decrease as the extraction time was increased in decoctions produced using both methods. After 60 and 180 mins, the levels of albiflorin, paeoniflorin, nodakenin, naringin, and neohesperidin were significantly higher in decoctions extracted using the non-pressurized method compared with those extracted using the pressurized method. After 120 mins, only cinnamaldehyde was extracted in a greater amount in pressurized decoctions compared with non-pressurized decoctions. The levels of paeoniflorin, ferulic acid, nodakenin, naringin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, and glycyrrhizin increased with time in non-pressurized decoctions. This study showed that the use of pressurized and non-pressurized extraction methods for different times affected the composition of Ojeoksan (Wuji-san) decoctions.

  • Photocrosslinkable soluble polyimide and polymethacrylate compound were synthesized for studying the optically induced anisotropy of the thin films. Chalcone group was introduced into the side chain unit of two polymers. We observed a photodimerization behavior between the double bonds in the chalcone group and an optical anisotropy of these materials by irradiation of a linearly polarized UV light (LPL). Optical anisotropy of the thin film was also investigated by using polarized UV absorption spectroscopy. The dynamic property of optical anisotropy in photoreactive polyimide was compared to that in polymethacrylate containing chalcone group in the side chain.

  • This experiment has conducted to evaluate whether single injection of red ginseng extract including 50% ethanol extract, crude saponin, and lipid soluble fraction can induce oxidative burst of mouse peritoneal macrophages with use of fluorescence spectrophotometer. To optimize conditions of fluorescent spectrophotometry, concentrations of DCFH-DA(2', 7' -dichlorofluorescin diacetate) was 1.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and control oxidative burst by Zymosan A and PMA(phorbol myristate acetate) were 100$\mu\textrm{g}$, 250ng, respectively. Though in vitro macrophages failed to induce increment of H2O2 production, but 50% ethanol extract group induced significant enhancement of H2O2 production when zymosan A triggered oxidative burst. On the other hand, lipid soluble fraction enhanced significantly H2O2 production than that of control group. These findings consisted with the other reports which showed ginsenosides inhibited nitric oxide production and lipid soluble fraction activated colony stimulating factor(granulocyte - monocyte) activity in bone marrow stem cells. As is well known, lipid soluble fraction contains phenol compound, polyacetylene compound and alkaloids. Further study would unravel which component of it can induce H2O2 production of macrophages. Key words : Red ginseng(Panax ginseng), H2O2 production, macrophages.

  • The aim of the present study was to elucidate the effect of the water soluble chitosans on the removal of contaminated radiostrontium (Sr-85) from the bone of mice. The remaining radioactivities in intravenously injected controls(group 1) were higher than in intraperitoneally injected controls (group 4, P<0.01). The % retention at day 5 were $57.7{\pm}1.9%,\;54.4{\pm}1.2%$, respectively. Single intravenous injection of 0.3% water soluble chitosan and continuous oral ingestion of 10% water soluble chitosan for 15 days were' ineffective on the removal of contaminated radiostrontiums. Multiple intravenous or intraperitoneal injections of water soluble chitosan effectively removed contaminated radiostrontiums(P<0.01 vs controls). In conclusion, water soluble chitosan might remove once incorporated radiostrontium from bones of mice. Further studies were needed to elucidate the mechanism of the removal.

  • Objectives : Specifications by Processing Methods of Liriope platyphylla (LP) was not established in korea. We carried out method study for manufacture of LP. Above all, LP were purchased and were processed at four kinds. First group had hearts of swelling roots, not cut bodies(LP-A). Second group had not hearts of swelling roots, not cut bodies(LP-B). Third group had hearts of swelling roots, cut bodies(LP-C). Forth group had an aggregate of hearts of swelling roots(LP-D). Methods : We has gained losses on drying, contents of ethanol-soluble extracts, contents of water-soluble extracts and contents of spicatoside A. Results : 1. Losses on drying of all group were less than 18% that is a standard of chinese pharmacopoeia. 2. Contents of ethanol-soluble extracts at LP-C, LP-D were included more than contents of those in the other groups in significance levels. 3. Contents of water-soluble extracts at LP-A, LP-C were included more than contents of those in the other groups in significance levels. 4. Contents of spicatoside A in LP-B were included more than content of spicatoside A in the other groups in significance levels. Resultingly, standards of LP in korea were proposed compatible proposals suggested as below. 1. Losses on drying of LP were less than 15% that is less than that of chinese pharmacopoeia. 2. Form to boil in water must be cutting body with heart of swelling root. 3. Because there is no content of spicatoside A in heart of swelling root, it is not suited to purpose a index component. Conclusions : The subjects of loss on drying and form of LP to boil in water must be contained in korean pharmacopoeia. Moreover, because of much valuable LP in food and medicine, it is urgently required aspect of index component such as spicatoside B, spicatoside C, flavonoid, polysaccharide having medical actions and so on.

  • The transfer of predictive models using various chemometric techniques has been reported for FTNIR and scanning-grating based NIR instruments with respect relatively dry samples (<10% water). Some of the currently used transfer techniques include slope and bias correction (SBC), direct standardization (DS), piecewise direct standardization (PDS), orthogonal signal correction (OSC), finite impulse transform (FIR) and wavelet transform (WT) and application of neural networks. In a previous study (Greensill et at., 2001) on calibration transfer for wet samples (intact melons) across silicon diode array instrumentation, we reported on the performance of various techniques (SBC, DS, PDS, double window PDS (DWPDS), OSC, FIR, WT, a simple photometric response correction and wavelength interpolative method and a model updating method) in terms of RMSEP and Fearns criterion for comparison of RMSEP. In the current study, we compare these melon transfer results to a similar study employing pairs of spectrometers for non-invasive prediction of soluble solid content of peaches.

  • Several coumarins isolated from Angelica sp. were described to show inhibitory effects against human platelet aggregation. The anti-thrombotic and anti-platelet potential was evaluated, in this paper, with the BuOH soluble fraction of Angelica dahurica root. The BuOH fraction was divided into five subfractions fr. A - E and tested in the mouse model of thrombosis. Survival was enhanced to 35% with fr. A or fr. E treated (500 mg/Kg, p.o.) group of mice compared with 5% survival of the control group. However, none of the 8 coumarin glycosides obtained from fr. A, at the conc. of 0.5 mg/ml, showed inhibitory effects against rat platelet aggregation induced by ADP or collagen.
