  • The effects of the location and dimension of the gate, location, and volume of the feeder, application of a chill, chill volume, and heating method of the feeder with respect to the effect of the mold-designing technologies on the defect status of the products are described. It is possible to increase the solidification time of the feeder by heating feeder. Furthermore, the pressure generated from the feeder is imposed on a product, and this decreases the generation of shrinkage porosities. In this study, two types of gating and feeding systems had been proposed: the bottom L-type junctions and the top L-type junctions. Additionally, solidification behaviors, such as solidification time, shrinkage porosities, weight percentage of chill system to product, hot spot, and solidification time ratio (=Solidification time of feeder/solidification time of product), are extensively analyzed by using commercial casting simulation software. Based on the solidification behaviors, reasonable mold design, feeding system, critical feeder heating temperature, and solidification time ratios are proposed in the sand casting process for the fabrication of carrier housing in order to reduce the casting defects and to increase the recovery rate.

  • In this study, the solidification characteristics inside the AC7A casting material was analyzed using the numerical analysis method and was verified using the experimental method by the pre-heated temperature conditions of metal casting device. For the numerical analysis, "COMSOL Multiphysics", the commercial code based on the finite element analysis(FEA), was used in order to predict the thermal deformation of the AC7A casting material including temperature, displacement and stress distribution. Also, in order to verify the results calculated by the numerical analysis, the experiment for temperature measurement inside the AC7A casting material was performed using the K-type thermocouple under the same condition of numerical analysis method. In the numerical results, thermal deformation inside AC7A casting material was well-suited for manufacturing products when the pre-heated temperatures of the metal casting device was $250^{\circ}C$. When the results of the temperature distribution were experimentally measured and were compared with those of the numerical result, it appeared that there was some temperature difference because of the latent heat by phase change heat transfer. However, the result of cooling temperature and patterns were almost similar except for the latent heat interval. The solidification characteristics was closely related to the temperature difference between the surface and inside of the casting.

  • In order to predict droplet velocity and temperature profiles and fractional solidification with flight distance during spray forming, the Newtonian heat transfer formulation has been coupled with the classical heterogeneous nucleation and the specific solidification process. It has been demonstrated that the thermal profile of the droplet in flight is significantly affected by process parameters such as droplet size, initial gas velocity, undercooling. As the droplet size and/or the initial gas velocity increase, the onset and completion of solidification are shifted to greater flight distances and the solidification process also extends over a wider range of flight distances. The amounts of solid fractions formed during recoalescence, segregated solidification and eutectic solidification are insensitive to droplet size and initial gas velocity whereas those are strongly affected by the degree of undercooling. There are good linear relations between the undercooling and the corresponding solid fractions generated during recoalesced, segregated and eutectic stages.

  • In general, water treatment sludge (WTS) had high concentration of heavy metal, thus it made the reuse or recycling of WTS difficult. The optimal solidification conditions for maximum suppression of heavy metal elution from WTS were decided in this study. Under the optimal solidification conditions (i.e., temperature, $320^{\circ}C;$ ratio of WTS and MgO, 9:1; solidification time, 1hr), all of heavy metal including aluminum were not detected. Therefore there are no problems for reuse or recycling of WTS which was solidified under the optimal solidification conditions found in the study.

  • The viscous plane stagnation-flow solidification problem is theoretically investigated. An analytic solution at the beginning of solidification is obtained by expanding the temperature and thickness of solidified layer in powers of time. An exact expression for the steady-state thickness of solidified layer is also obtained. The .fluid flow toward the cold substrate inhibits the solidification process. As Stefan number becomes larger, or Prandtl number becomes smaller, the solidification is more strongly inhibited by the fluid flow. The transient heat flux at the liquid side of solid-liquid interface is increased, as Stefan number or Prandtl number is increased.

  • A numerical procedure for the calculation of solidification and melting phase change using PISO algorithm is presented. In case of phase change problem, the coupling between velocity/pressure/temperature and liquid fraction is important. The converged temperature and liquid fraction solution which satisfies the energy balance is acquired by applying enthalpy method into inner iteration in matrix solver. And a modified PISO algorithm version is introduced to properly solve the coupling between velocity/pressure/temperature and liquid fraction. A comparison of the proposed procedure with a standard iterative method shows improvement both in terms of computing speed and robustness.

  • An analytical solution is presented for the conduction-dominated solidification of a binary mixture in a semi-infinite medium. The present approach differs from that of other solution by these four characteristics. (1) Solid fraction is determined from the phase diagram, (2) thermophysical properties in mushy zone are weighted according to the local solid fraction, (3) non-equilibrium solidification can be simulated and (4) the cooling condition of under-eutectic temperature can be simulated. Up to now, almost all analyses are based on the assumption of constant properties in mushy zone and solid fraction linearly with temperature or length. The validation for these assumptions, however, shows that serious error is found except some special cases. The influence of microscopic model on the macroscopic temperature profile is very small and can be ignored. But the solid fraction and average solid concentration which directly influence the quality of materials are drastically changed by the microscopic models. An approximate solution using the method of weighted residuals is also introduced and shows good agreement with the analytical solution. All calculations are performed for NH$_{4}$Cl-H$_{2}$O and Al-Cu system.

  • The bonding phenomenon and mechanism in the transient liquid phase bonding(TLP Bonding) of directionally solidified Ni base superalloy, GTD-111 was investigated. At the bonding temperature of 1403K, liquid insert metal was eliminated by isothermal solidification which was controlled by the diffusion of B and Si into the base metal and solids in the bonded interlayer grew epitaxially from mating base metal inward the insert metal. The number of grain boundaries formed at the bonded interlayer was corresponded with those of base metal. The liquation of grain boundary and dendrite boundary occurred at 1433K. At the bonding temperature of 1453K which is higher than liquation temperature of grain boundary, liquids of the Insert metal were connected with liquated grain boundaries and compositions in each region mixed mutually. In Joints held for various time at 1453t phases formed at liquated grain boundary far from the interface were similar to those of bonded interlayer. With prolonged holding time, liquid phases decreased gradually and liquids of continuous band shape divided many island shape. But liquid phases did not disappeared after holding for 7.2ks at 1453k. Isothermal solidification process at the bonding temperature which is higher than the liquation temperature of the grain boundary was controlled by diffusion of Ti to be result in liquation than B or Si. in insert metal. • Solidification of aluminum alloys under moderate pressures has been investigated. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface varies with time after pouring the molten metal into the die cavity, and therefore plays an important role in determining solidification sequence. The heat transfer coefficients were evaluated by using an inverse problem method, based on the measured temperature distribution. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were used for solidification simulation in the squeeze casting process. The effects of applied pressure and positions of insulation in the mold have also been investigated on solidification microstructures and on the formation of macrosegregation of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys.
