In order to examine the working condition of melts in tin bath of float process it was investigated Sn diffusion behavior and solidification rate of melts for alkali-alkaline earth-silica PDP substrate glasses such as commercial CaO rich CS-77 glass, commercial $Al_2O_3$ rich PD-200 glass and self developed $SiO_2$ rich T-series (T-2, T-4, T-6) glasses. In the case of Sn depth and concentration created in glass surface by ion exchange between Sn and alkali, T-series showed lower value than CS-77, especially T-2 is more excellent than PD-200. The solidification rate of melts expressed by cooling time between $log{\eta}=4\;and\;7.6dPa{\cdot}s$ was low for T-series comparing with CS-77 and PD-200. Therefore, it was concluded that T-series is desirable considering forming condition in the tin bath of the float process.

Metallurgical studies on the bonded interlayer of directionally solidified Ni-base superalloy GTD111 joints were carried out during transient liquid phase bonding. The formation mechanism of solid during solidification process was also investigated. Microstructures at the bonded interlayer of joints were characterized with bonding temperature. In the bonding process held at 1403K, liquid insert metal was eliminated by well known mechanism of isothermal solidification process and formation of the solid from the liquid at the bonded interlayer were achieved by epitaxial growth. In addition, grain boundary formed at bonded interlayer is consistent with those of base metal. However, in the bonding process held at 1453K, extensive formation of the liquid phase was found to have taken place along dendrite boundaries and grain boundaries adjacent to bonded interlayer. Liquid phases were also observed at grain boundaries far from the bonding interface. This phenomenon results in liquation of grain boundaries. With prolonged holding, liquid phases decreased gradually and changed to isolated granules, but did not disappeared after holding for 7.2ks at 1473K. This isothermal solidification occurs by diffusion of Ti to be result in liquation. In addition, grain boundaries formed at bonded interlayer were corresponded with those of base metal. In the GTD-ll1 alloy, bonding mechanism differs with bonding temperature.
The change of microstructure in the bonded interlayer and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated during Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding(TLP bonding) of STS304/SM17C and STS304/SM45C couples using Ni base amorphous alloys added boron and prepared alloy as insert metal. Main experimental results obtained in this study are as follows: 1) Isothermal solidification process was completed much faster than theoretically expected time, 14ks at 1473K temperature. Its completion times were 3.6ks at 1423K, 2.5ks at 1473K and 1.6ks at 1523K respectively. 2) As the concentration of boron in the insert metal increased, the more borides were precipitated near bonded interlayer and grain boundary of STS304 side during isothermal solidification process, its products were $M_{23}P(C,B)_6}_3)$ The formation of grain boundary during isothermal solidification process was completed at structural carbon steel after starting the solidfication at STS304 stainless steel. 4) The highest value of hardness was obtained at bonded interface of STS304 side. The desirable tensile properties were obtained from STS304/SM17C, STS304/SM45C using MBF50 and experimentally prepared insert metal with low boron concentration.
In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the spreading and solidification of a droplet impacting onto a solid substrate in the thermal spray process. The finite difference method with volume-of-fluid approach is used to analyze the free surface flow and the source-based enthalpy method is employed to model the latent heat release during the solidification. In this work, the numerical model is validated through the comparison of the present numerical result with experimental data available for the flat substrate.
Solidification analysis was conducted on large steel castings and ingots by a modified finite difference method. Auto-mesh generation system was developed for improving the application of the computer analysis system to casting disign. Combined use of the prediction parameters, solidification time and temperature gradient, and an auxiliary parameter, shrinkage potential, were used to predict the formation of shrinkage defects. Several examples on the prediction of shrinkage cavity by this method were campared with the experimental reslts. It was found that a quantitative design of large steel castings and ingots can be made by the computer aided analysis of solidification process.
A Solidification of the aluminum was studied under the condition of the forced liquid convection. The Al melt was stirred by a highly rotating carbon bar on whose surface the solidified Al was nucleated. The Al was refined by partial solidification and the solute distributions were rationalized through the estimation of the solidification rate which is based on the heat transfer calculation of the process. The microstructure-morphological change of the specimens was also showed.
The technology of Semi-Solid Forging(SSF) has been actively developed to fabricate near-net shape products using light and hardly formable materials. Generally, the SSF process is composed of slug heating, forming, compression holding and ejecting step. After forming step in SSF, the slug is comperssed during a certain holding time in order to be completely filled in the die cavity and be accelerated in solidification rate. This paper presents the analysis of temperature, solid fraction and shrinkage at compression holding step for a cylindrical slug, then predicts the solidification time to obtain the final shaped part. Enthalpy-based finite element analysis is performed to solve the heat transfer problem considering phase change in solidification.
In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the impingement, spreading and solidification of a coating material droplet impacting onto a solid substrate in the thermal spray process. The numerical model is validated through the comparison of the present numerical result with experimental data fer the flat substrate without surface defects. An analysis of deposition formation on the non-polished substrate with surface defects is also performed. The parametric study is conducted with various surface defect sizes and shapes to examine the effect of surface defects on the impact and solidification of the liquid droplet on the substrate.
In micro-stereolithography technology, fabrication conditions that include laser power, laser scan speed, laser scan pitch, and material property of photopolymer such as penetration depth and critical exposure are considered as major process variables. But the existing scan path generation methods based only on CAD model have not taken them into account, which has resulted in cross-section dimension of low accuracy. Thus, to enhance cross-section dimensional accuracy, the physical resin solidification n phenomena should be reflected in laser scan path generation and stage operating code. In this paper, multi-line experiments based on single line solidification model are performed. And the method for improving cross-section dimensional accuracy is presented, which is to apply the database based on experimental results to laser scan path generation.
The effect of an aluminum scrap addition ratio on the tensile and solidification cracking properties of the AC4A aluminum alloy in the as-cast state and heat-treated state were investigated in this study. Generally, the expected problem of using scrap in aluminum casting is an increase of hydrogen and Fe element inside the aluminum melt. Another issue is an oxide film which has a weak interface with the molten aluminum and acts as potent nucleation sites for internal porosity and crack initiation. Solidification cracking is one of the critical defects that must be resolved to produce high quality castings. A conventional evaluation method for solidification cracking is a relative and qualitative analysis method which does not provide quantitative data on the thermal stress in the solidification process. Therefore, a newly designed solidification cracking test apparatus was used in this study, and the device can provide quantitative data. As a result, after conducting experiments with different scrap addition ratios (0%, 20%, 35%, 50%), the tensile strengths and elongations in the as-cast state were 214, 187.7, 182.1 and 170.4MPa and 4.6%, 3.4%, 3.1% and 2.3%, respectively. In the case of the T6 heat-treated state, the tensile strengths and elongations were 314.9, 294.6, 293.1 and 271.1MPa and 5.4%, 4.6%, 3.8% and 3.1%, respectively. The strength of the solidification cracking was 3.1, 2.4, 2.2and 1.6MPa as the scrap addition ratio increases.
