The effect of sublimable vehicles on the pore structure of Cu fabricated by freeze drying is investigated. The 5 vol% CuO-dispersed slurries with camphene and various camphor-naphthalene compositions are frozen in a Teflon mold at -25℃, followed by sublimation at room temperature. After hydrogen reduction at 300℃ and sintering at 600 ℃, the green bodies of CuO are completely converted to Cu with various pore structures. The sintered samples prepared using CuO/camphene slurries show large pores that are aligned parallel to the sublimable vehicle growth direction. In addition, a dense microstructure is observed in the bottom section of the specimen where the solidification heat was released, owing to the difference in the solidification behavior of the camphene crystals. The porous Cu shows different pore structures, such as dendritic, rod-like, and plate shaped, depending on the composition of the camphornaphthalene system. The change in pore structure is explained by the crystal growth behavior of primary camphor and eutectic and primary naphthalene.
Al-Si alloys have been steadily used as a potential material for the achievement of an efficient weight reduction in the automobile and aerospace industries due to its excellent castability and high strength-to-weight ratio. In this study, riser effect and mechanical properties were investigated according to the size of the sleeve. In addition, the effects of riser size on mechanical properties of castings were investigated. On the other hand flow and solidification process were simulated with a hybrid FDM/FEM package named ZCast. As a result, results of simulation and experiments were comparable regarding to the yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness of casting. It proves the reliability of the simulation. It is expected that the proper size of riser can improve the recycling rate of metallic materials and reduce the cost of casting.
This paper was studied on microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion characteristics of 316L stainless steel pipe welds was fabricated by orbital welding process. S-Ar specimen was fabricated by using Ar purge gas and S-$N_2$ specimen was fabricated by using $N_2$ purge gas. Ferrite was not detected in weld metal of S-$N_2$ specimen but the order of 0.13 Ferrite number(FN) was detected in weld metal of S-Ar specimen. Oxygen and Nitrogen concentration of S-$N_2$ specimen was higher than S-Ar specimen on HAZ and inner bead. The welds microstructural characteristics of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ specimens are similar. The microvickers hardness values of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ specimens welds were similar and average values of each regions were in the range of 174~194. The microstructures of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ weld metal were full austenite by primary austenite solidification. The Solidification structures of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ weld metal were formed directional dendrite toward bead center. The potentiodynamic polarization curve of STS 316L pipe welds exhibited typical active, passive, transpassive behaviour. Corrosion current density$(I_{corr.})$ and corrosion rate values of S-Ar specimen in 0.1M HCl solution were $0.95{\mu}A/cm^2$ and $0.31{\mu}A$/year respectively. The values of S-$N_2$ specimen were $1.4{\mu}A/cm^2$ and $0.45{\mu}m$/year.
SiGe alloy is widely used thermoelectric materials for high temperature thermoelectric generator applications. However, its high thermoelectric performance has been thus far realized only in alloys synthesized employing mechanical alloying techniques, which are time-consuming and employ several materials processing steps. In the current study, for the first time, we report an enhanced thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT) ~ 1.1 at $900^{\circ}C$ in ntype $Si_{80}Ge_{20}$ nano-alloys, synthesized using a facile and up-scalable methodology consisting of rapid solidification at high optimized cooling rate ${\sim}3.4{\times}10^7K/s$, employing melt spinning followed by spark plasma sintering of the resulting nano-crystalline melt-spun ribbons. This enhancement in ZT > 20% over its bulk counterpart, owes its origin to the nano-crystalline microstructure formed at high cooling rates, which results in crystallite size ~7 nm leading to high density of grain boundaries, which scatter heat-carrying phonons. This abundant scattering resulted in a very low thermal conductivity ${\sim}2.1Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$, which corresponds to ~50% reduction over its bulk counterpart and is amongst the lowest reported thus far in n-type SiGe alloys. The synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, based on which the enhancement in their thermoelectric performance has been discussed.
In the present study the effect of cooling rate during solidification on the microstructural characteristics of Al-xAg (x = 31, 33, 35 at.%) in-situ binary eutectic composites has been investigated. To provide a wide range of cooling rate three different casting techniques, i.e. conventional casting, injection casting, and melt spinning have been used. The observed microstructure is very much dependent on the cooling rate. The fcc ${\alpha}$-Al and hcp $Ag_2Al$ phases exhibits an orientation of (111)Al//(0001)$Ag_2Al$, [1-10]Al//[11- 20]$Ag_2Al$. The microstructure of the melt-spun samples contains Widmanstatten structure resulting from solid-state transformation and nano scale two-phase structure resulting from solid-state phase separation. The microstructure of injection-cast samples contains eutectic structure and solid state phase-separated structure. On the other hand, conventional-cast samples exhibit a microstructure consisted of plate-type eutectic structure.
The microstructure and tensile properties of Mg-Zn-Ca and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys have been investigated. The alloys were obtained by melting in a low carbon crucible coated with boron nitride under an Ar gas atmosphere to prevent oxidation and combustion. The Mg alloy melt was cast into the metallic mold at room temperature, and cooling part was located at the bottom of mold. The phase formed during solidification of the Mg-Zn-(Mn) alloys containing 0.5%Ca is $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloys increased with increasing Zn content, but the ductility did not change with increasing Zn content. The addition of Mn improves the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloys, but the ductility did not change. Tensile fracture of the alloys revealed brittle failure, with cracking along the $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ phase. The variation of stress with strain obeyed the relationship of the ${\sigma}=K{\varepsilon}^n$.
The microstructure of a newly developed alloy tool steel (KV1) for casting cold-work press dies was analyzed using advanced scanning electron microscopy. Its mechanical properties and durability in use as piercing inserts were tested. It contained a continuous network structure which originated from the micro-segregation during solidification and was composed of retained austenite and primary carbides. However, after quenching and tempering, its continuity was destroyed due to the decomposition of austenite. The discontinuous spatial distribution and the smaller amount of primary carbide in the network presented KV1 enhanced ductility compared to the common alloy (HK700). The reduced C and Cr, the addition of V resulted in a small amount of primary carbides which primarily consisted of MC, as well as fine and uniform dispersion of precipitates. Owing to these features, KV1 exhibited delayed initiation of chipping when used for piercing inserts.
In this study, the effect of the transition elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-Mg-X alloys was investigated. As a result of the rapid solidification processing, fine equiaxed grains with a mean diameter of 2 $\mu$m were observed in these alloys. Many fine particles were found to be distributed rather homogeneously throughout the matrix with relatively large particles occasionally at grain boundaries. The ultimate tensile strengths of Al-Mg-X alloys were found to decrease rather remarkably at 150 $^{\circ}C$ without the gain of the ductility at 150 $^{\circ}C$, which may result from segregation of $\beta$ ($Al_{3}Mg_{2}$) precipitates. Fine dimples were observed on the fracture surfaces for all alloy systems and the variation of the size and shape of dimples was not observed upon alloy systems. The ductility at 530 $^{\circ}C$ was found to be ~100%, suggesting that grain boundary sliding did not contribute to ductiliy despite he grain size stabilization. The absence of superplastic behavior may be associated with low boundary misorientation in rapidly solidified Al-Mg-X alloys.

In this paper the intrinsic influence of micron-sized nickel particle reinforcements on microstructure, micro-hardness tensile properties and tensile fracture behavior of nano-alumina particle reinforced magnesium alloy AZ31 composite is presented and discussed. The unreinforced magnesium alloy (AZ31) and the reinforced nanocomposite counterpart (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$/1.5 vol.% Ni] were manufactured by solidification processing followed by hot extrusion. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the nickel particle-reinforced magnesium alloy nano-composite was higher than both the unreinforced magnesium alloy and the unreinforced magnesium alloy nanocomposite (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$). The ultimate tensile strength of the nickel particle reinforced composite was noticeably lower than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy (AZ31). The ductility, quantified by elongation-to-failure, of the reinforced nanocomposite was noticeably higher than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy. Tensile fracture behavior of this novel material was essentially normal to the far-field stress axis and revealed microscopic features reminiscent of the occurrence of locally ductile failure mechanisms at the fine microscopic level.
By using the centrifugal atomization, which is one of the rapid solidification processes, Al-5,10wt%Pb alloys which are monotectic alloys were melted at 150K over two liquid phase line in the phase diagram. The melted alloy was poured on the rotating disk, being made into atomized powders, and then the solidified microstructure and morphology of the powder were investigated. This study converted the produced powders into strips by strained powder rolling. According to sintering temperature, the microstructure and hardness were investigated. The solidified structure of the powders were almost cellular dendritic structure. Pb particles ($2.0-3.0{\mu}m$) were fairl distributed in the Al matrix. Powder shapes were irregular. Rolling property and the compacting was good, respectively, because of increasing mechanical interlocking and surface area in the small size powders. With increasing temperature, the boundarys of powders were in porous form due to the diffusion. Pb particles which were surrounding the pores were inverse-segregated at the surface of the powders. With increasing of sintering temperature, the hardness of the powders and the strips decreased. In particular rolling-strip, the hardness abruptly decreased due to the release of work-hardening.
