The effect of the microstructure of gray cast iron on friction properties was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Cast iron samples used in this investigation were obtained from "step block" castings, which were designed to produce microstructure with different graphite flake morphologies from different cooling rate and solidification rate. Results of this work showed that the gray cast iron disks with long graphite flakes showed less fading. The rotors containing smaller amounts of ferrite showed higher friction coefficient and better fade resistance than others.an others.
The production of light metal parts using aluminum is mainly performed by die casting and squeeze casting, which directly fabricate the required shape from the liquid state. However, die casting is subject to defects such as shrinkage porosity and air trapped when molten metal enters the cavity, whilst squeeze casting also has defects due to turbulent flow in the die cavity. Both diecasting and sqeeze casting have inhomogeneous mechanical property in terms of dendritic structure during solidification. Active research has been carried out on semi-solid processing, rather than on conventional process methods such as die casting, which involve various problems. Therefore in this paper, to introduce the fundamental technology for d e design, in die casting and forging process with semi-solid materials, relationship between stress and strain of semi-solid materials, and for producing parts die design has been proposed as parameters of globulization of the microstructure and gate shape. The prevention of various defects to produce sound parts are also introduced.
Microstructure of hypereutectic Al-17wt.% Si alloy, fabricated by mechanical stirring and by reheating at semi-solid state, was investigated by optical microscope. Flow behavior semi-solid metal also was investigated at diffentent mould temperatures 280$^{\circ}C$, 290$^{\circ}C$ and 300$^{\circ}C$. Size of silicon particles were increased over 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ during solidification as a result of stirring. It is considered as microstructural coarsening by bonding between neighbouring primary silion particles during stirring of slurry. In case of reheating at semi-solid state, however, primary silicon particle was not increased at size of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ and nearly spherical aluminum solde particle also could be obtained uniformly in distribution. The fludity of Al-17wt.% Si alloys at semi-solid state was improved when solid fraction was 0.7 at mould temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$ than other conditions.

Fabrication of $Mg_{95.75}Zn_1Y_3Yb_{0.25}$ bulk alloy has been performed through the consolidation of rapidly solidified ribbons. The $Mg_{95.75}Zn_1Y_3Yb_{0.25}$ bulk alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high tensile yield strength of 530 MPa, and large elongation of 3 %. Microstructure of the alloy was characterized by equiaxed fine grains that consist of -Mg, long period ordered (LPO) structure phase, and $Mg_5RE$-type cubic compound. The strengthening of the alloys may be due to fine grains with LPO structure phase and $Mg_5RE$-type compound.
AC4A $Al/Al_2O_3+SiC_p$ hybrid composites were fabricated by the squeeze infiltration technique. Effect of applied pressure, volume fraction of reinforcement($Al_2O_3$ and SiC) and SiC particle size($4.5{\mu}m$, $6.5{\mu}m$ and $9.3{\mu}m$) on the solidification microstructure of the hybrid composites were examined. Mechanical properties were estimated preliminarly by fractographic observation, hardness measurement and wear test. Results show that the microstructure of the hybrid composites were quite satisfactory, namely revealing relatively uniform distribution of reinforcements and refined matrix. Some aggregation of SiC particle caused by particle pushing was observed especially in the hybrid composites containg in fine particle($4.5{\mu}m$). Refined matrix was attributed to applied pressure and increased nucleation sites with addition of reinforcements. Fractured facet also revealed finer for the hybrid composites possibly due to refined matrix. Hardness and wear resistance increased with volume fraction of reinforcements. For hybrid composites with $9.3{\mu}m$ SiC, hardness was somewhat lower and wear resistance higher than other composites.
In this study, we focused on the correlation between the solidification structure, heat treatment and mechanical properties of the A356 alloy according to the conditions of Sr modification. The microstructural evolution of the eutectic Si and ${\alpha}-Al$ phase in the A356 alloy castings depending on the amount of Sr were investigated during solid solution heat treatment using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope and an image analyzer. In addition, tensile tests on the heat treated materials examined the relationship between the microstructure and the fracture surface. The as-cast A356 alloys under 40 ppm Sr showed an undermodified microstructure, but that of the added 60-80 ppm Sr had well modified structure of fine fibrous silicon. After solid solution treatment, the microstructure of the undermodified A356 alloy exhibited a partially spheroidized morphology, but the remainder showed the fragmentation of fibrous shaped silicon. The spheroidization of the eutectic silicon in the modified A356 alloys was completed during heat treatment, which was very effective in increasing the elongation. This is supported by the fracture surface in the tensile test.
The change of microstructure in the bonded interlayer and tensile properties of joints were studied for liquid phase diffusion bonding using STS-310 and Incoloy-825 as base metal and base metal+B alloy as insert inetal. Main experimental results obtained in this study are as follows. 1) The optimum amount of B addition into the insert metal was found to be about 4mass%. 2) When isothermal solidification was completed, the microstructure in the bonded interlayer was the same with that of the base metal because of the grain boundary migration in the bonded interlayer. 3) All of the tensile specimen fractured at base metal and joints bonded at optimum condition exhibited tensile properties in excess of base metal requirements. 4) It was determined that fine car-borides and bordes such as M$_{23}$(C,B)$_{6}$, Cr$_{2}$B, and CrB in STS-310S and TiB in Incoloy-825 exist at the grain boundary around bonded interlayer. These precipitates almost disappeared after homogenizing treatment at 1373K for 86.4ks.s.
For high performance aerospace structures, the properties of highest priority are low density, high strength, and high stiffness(modulus of elasticity). Addition of beryllium decrease the density of the aluminum alloy and increase the strength and the stiffness of the alloy. However it is very difficult to produce the Al-Be alloy having useful engineering properties by conventional ingot casting, because of the extremely limited solid solubility of beryllium in aluminum. So, rapid solidification processing is necessary to obtain extended solid solubility. In this study, rapidly solidified Al-6 at% Be alloy were prepared by twin roll melt spinning process and single roll melt spinning process. Twin roll melt spun ribbons were extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ with reduction in area of 25 : 1 after vacuum hot pressing at $550^{\circ}C and 375^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of melt spun ribbon exhibited a refined cellular microstructure with dispersed Be particles. As advance velocity of liquid/solid interface increase, the morphology of Be particle vary from rod-like type to spherical type and the crystal structure of Be particle from HCP to BCC. These microstructural characteristics of rapidly solidified Al-6at.%Be alloy were described on the basis of metastable phase diagram proposed by Perepezko and Boettinger. The extruded ribbon consisted of recrystallized grains dispersed with Be particles and exhibited improved tensile property compared with that of extruded ingot.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the microstructure and tensile strength of $SiC_p$/Al alloy composites fabricated by die casting method. Die casting was performed using the preheated mold at the pouring temperature range of $620{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of $1,039 kgf/cm^2$. The low speed and a following high injection speed were 0.4 and 2.1 m/s, respectively. The microstructure of $SiC_p$/Al alloy composites fabricated by die casting method was found to be finer than that of composites fabricated by gravity casting. Also, SiC particulates were homogeneously distributed in refined Al matrix due to rapid solidification. The tensile strength of $SiC_p$/Al alloy composites fabricated by die casting method was found to be varied with cast temperature. The maximun tensile strength of $SiC_p$(10 vol.% and 20 vol.%)/Al alloy composites showed 380 MPa at the cast temperature of $750^{\circ}C$ and 363 MPa at the cast temperature of $700^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Recently as environmental pollution caused by Pb has posed a serious threat to the global environment, the trend to regulate the usage of Pb in electronic industry is one the rise. Currently, the solder alloy with high Pb content, Sn-37%Pb, is utilized in the electronic assembly therefore, the objective of this study is to develop an alternative solder alloy for the existing Sn-37%Pb solder alloy. First thing, this work choosed Sn-5%Pb-1.5%Ag, Sn-5%Pb-1.5%Ag-x%Bi(x=1~5%) for candidate solder alloys, and examined their properties such as melting range, wettability, microhardness, tensile property, oxidation behavior and microstructure. Wettability was on the same level of Sn-37%Pb. Dissolution of Pb ion in Sn-5%Pb solder was 0.46ppm. This solder alloy revealed cellular dendrite microstructure $\beta$-Sn matrix, Pb-rich phase, Ag/Sn, and Cu/Sn Intermetallic compounds. The range of solidification temperature was within 3$0^{\circ}C$. Also these alloy displayed higher tensile strength and lower elongation than Sn-37%Pb. The resistance of oxidation in Sn-5%Pb-1.5%Ag solder alloy was superior to that of Sn-37%Pb solder alloy. But that of Sn-5%Pb-1.5%Ag-5%Bi solder alloy was equal to that of Sn-37%Pb solder alloy.
