A numerical study is made on the ice-formation for a laminar flow in a curved channel. When the water flows through the curved channel with the walls specified below the freezing temperature, the ice layer has been formed on the curved surface, different from that of a straight channel. The fluctuation of ice layer has been predicted, considering the variation of velocity and temperature near the curved portion of channel. The study also takes into account the interaction existing between the laminar flow and the curved channel. In the solution strategy, the present study is substantially different from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the solid and liquid regions are resolved. The results from this study have been mainly presented, focusing on the variation of ice layer close to the curved portion. Numerical results have been obtained parametrically by varying the curved angle and the radius of curvature of channel, in addition to the variation of Reynolds numbers and wall temperatures of channel. The results show that the curved shape of channel has the great effect on the thickness of the solidification layer. The wave of ice layer thickness appears in the vicinity of curved portion. This behavior of ice layer has been amplified as is the increasing of curved angle and the radius of curvature of channel. In addition, the ice layer becomes thin as Reynolds numbers in increasing. And also, as the wall temperature of channel increases, the width of channel becomes to be shrunk due to the growth of ice layers in the upper and lower wall of channel.
Single crystals of TeO2 with large diameter were grown by Czochralski technique with auto-diameter control system. The ratio of crystal to crucible was 60-70%. The effect of critical pulling and rotation rate on the crystal quality was studied. Optimum growth parameters for high quality crystal pulling rate was less than 1.2 mm/hr. The solid-liquid interface was convex at the rotation rate of 10-23 rpm and concave at the rotation rate of more than 25 rpm, depending on the size of crystal and crucible. The platinum concentration in the melts is one of the main factors of the constitutional supercooling and thus the bubble entrapment in the growing crystal. Growth axis was confirmed to {110} direction during the whole growth procedure. Infrared spectrometric study and dislocation density measurment by chemical etching method on the grown crystal were performed. Finally, the reasons of cooperation of striations, inclusions, and optical inhomogeneities were discussed.

In this study, basic design data which were required for development of highly efficient ice storage system with low temperature latent heat were experimentally obtained. The ice storage system considered in this study was the one that has been widely used in the developed country and called the ice-on-coil type. Using the system, the ice storage performance for various design parameters which were the flow direction and the inlet temperature of the secondary fluid was tested. In addition, the clockwise variation of the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM in the ice storage tank were investigated. During the melting processes in the ice storage tank with several vertical tubes, decrease of the solid-liquid interface area, which was the heat transfer area, between the floating ice and the water made the decreasing rate of IPF less. Also, the total melting energy for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow during the melting process, but this trend did not appear if the initial temperature of the PCM was $4^{\circ}C$. The average ice recovery efficiency for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow.

A thermal storage systems was designed to correspond to the temporal or quantitative variation in the thermal energy demand, and most of its heat is stored using the latent and sensible heat of the heat storage material. The heat storage method using latent heat has a very complex phenomenon for heat transfer and thermal behavior because it is accompanied by a phase change in the course of heating/cooling of the heat storage material. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to produce an experimentally accessible as well as numerical approach to confirm the heat transfer and thermal behavior of phase change materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems encountered during the actual heat transfer from an internal storage tank through simulation of the process of storing and utilizing thermal energy from the thermal storage tank containing charged PCM. This study used analysis methods to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM with simultaneous heating/cooling conditions in the rectangular space simulating the thermal storage tank. A numerical analysis was carried out in a state considering natural convection using the ANSYS FLUENT(R) program. The result indicates that the slope of the liquid-solid interface in the analysis field changed according to the temperature difference between the heating surface and cooling surface.

This study was conducted to improve the solid-liquid separation efficiency of clarifiers. To do so, the study did a bio-flocculation experiment simply by controlling the stirring speed (rpm) and baffle angle of a clarifier on a lab scale, but without using a coagulant. For the purpose of the experiment, the feed wall of a clarifier was so improved that a baffle could be installed on the clarifier. Then, it was ensured to change its stirring speed (to 0.0rpm, 0.6rpm, and 1.2rpm), with the angle fixed at 10°. As a result, it was found that concentration efficiency increased by 2.0%, and effluent removal efficiency (SS concentration) by 7.8%, at a stirring speed of 0.6ppm. This indicates the bio-coagulation efficiency of sludge increased with changing stirring speeds. Then, the baffle angle of the sedimentation unit was changed to analyze how the changed baffle angle would affect the sedimentation of sludge. As a result, it was found that the compression of sludge interface was very effective at a baffle angle of 20°. It is hoped that these experimental findings will be useful in improving the sedimentation efficiency of circular clarifiers.

This study investigates the interfacial reaction between powder-metallurgy high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and cast aluminum. HEA pellets are produced by the spark plasma sintering of Al0.5CoCrCu0.5FeNi HEA powder. These sintered pellets are then placed in molten Al, and the phases formed at the interface between the HEA pellets and cast Al are analyzed. First, Kirkendall voids are observed due to the difference in the diffusion rates between the liquid Al and solid HEA phases. In addition, although Co, Fe, and Ni atoms, which have low mixing enthalpies with Al, diffuse toward Al, Cu atoms, which have a high mixing enthalpy with Al, tend to form Al-Cu intermetallic compounds. These results provide guidelines for designing Al matrix composites containing high-entropy phases.

A gap between a $Al_2O_3/Fe$ thermite and lower head vessel is formed in the lower-plenum arrested vessel attack(LAVA) experiment which is the 1st phase study of simulation of naturally arrested vessel attack in vessel(SONATA-IV). The gap measurement using a conventional ultrasonic method would be lack of a reliability due to the structure complexity and the metallurgical grain size change of the lower head HAZ occurred by a thermite $Al_2O_3/Fe$ melt or a $Al_2O_3$ melt at $2300^{\circ}C$. The grain echoes having false signals and lower S/N ratio signals are detected due to a multiple scattering, a mode conversion and an attenuation of a ultrasonic resulted from at the interface of increased grain size zone. In this test, the signals pattern was classified to understand the behavior of the ultrasonic in a multi-layer specimen of solid-liquid-solid of assuming that the thermite and the lower head vessel is immersed. The polarity threshold algorithm of frequency diversity gives us the enhancement about 6dB of the ratio S/N.
Structural battery has been researched extensively to combine the functions of the battery and structure without gravimetric or volumetric increments compared to their individual components. The main idea is to employ carbon fabric as the reinforcement and electrode, glass fabric as the separator, and solid-state electrolyte which can transfer load. However, state-of-the-art solid-state electrolytes do not have sufficient load carrying functionality and exhibiting appropriate ion conductivity simultaneously. Therefore, in this research, a system which has both battery and load carrying capabilities using glass fabric separator and liquid electrolyte was devised and tested to investigate the potential and feasibility of this structural battery system and observe electric properties. It was observed that elongating separator decreased electrical behavior stability. A possible cause of this phenomenon was the elongated glass fabric separator inadequately preventing the penetration of small particles of the cathode material into the anode. This problem was verified additionally by using a commercial separator. The characteristic of the glass fabric and the interface between the electrode and glass fabric needed to be further studied for the realization of such a load carrying structural battery system.

This work deals with the effects of different oligomers, monomers, photoinitiators, and steel plates on the variation of gloss for UV coated steel plates at $20^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ (ASTM D523). The gloss value was more significantly varied with $20^{\circ}$ angle as compared with $60^{\circ}$. No substantial change in gloss was observed for the type of single oligomer; however, the gloss varied with the mixing ratios of oligomers, type and mixing ratio of monomers, type and concentration of photoinitiator, and type of steel plate. The maximum gloss value was observed when the mixing ratio of polyurethane acrylate (UA) to epoxy acrylate (EA) was 70 : 30, the mixing ratio of trimethylolpropantriacrylate (TMPTA) to tetrahydrofurfurylacrylate (THFA) was 5 : 5, the content of the mixed oligomer (UA : EA = 70 : 30) was 90 wt%, respectively. Darocur MBF of liquid type showed better gloss property than the solid type of Irgacure 184, and the gloss was decreased as the concentration of Darocur MBF increased from 1 to 4 wt%. Regarding the type of steel plate, GI steel plate showed better gloss property as compared with EG and primer-coated steel plates. The maximum gloss values of 95 GU and 120 GU, respectively, at $20^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ angles throughout the parametric study in the absence of leveling agents enhancing the gloss.

The increasing interest in light weight materials coupled to the need for cost -effective processing have combined to create a significant opportunity for aluminum P/M. particularly in the automotive industry in order to reduce fuel emissions and improve fuel economy at affordable prices. Additional potential markets for Al PIM parts include hand tools. Where moving parts against gravity represents a challenge; and office machinery, where reciprocating forces are important. Aluminum PIM adds light weight, high compressibility. low sintering temperatures. easy machinability and good corrosion resistance to all advantages of conventional iron bm;ed P/rv1. Current commercial alloys are pre-mixed of either the AI-Si-Mg or AL-Cu-Mg-Si type and contain 1.5% ethylene bis-stearamide as an internal lubricant. The powder is compacted in closed dies at pressure of 200-500Mpa and sintered in nitrogen at temperatures between $580~630^{\circ}C$ in continuous muffle furnace. For some applications no further processing is required. although most applications require one or more secondary operations such as sizing and finishing. These sccondary operations improve the dimension. properties or appearance of the finished part. Aluminum is often considered difficult to sinter because of the presence of a stable surface oxide film. Removal of the oxide in iron and copper based is usually achieved through the use of reducing atmospheres. such as hydrogen or dissociated ammonia. In aluminum. this occurs in the solid st,lte through the partial reduction of the aluminum by magncsium to form spinel. This exposcs the underlying metal and facilitates sintering. It has recently been shown that < 0.2% Mg is all that is required. It is noteworthy that most aluminum pre-mixes contain at least 0.5% Mg. The sintering of aluminum alloys can be further enhanced by selective microalloying. Just 100ppm pf tin chnnges the liquid phase sintering kinetics of the 2xxx alloys to produce a tensile strength of 375Mpa. an increilse of nearly 20% over the unmodified alloy. The ductility is unnffected. A similar but different effect occurs by the addition of 100 ppm of Pb to 7xxx alloys. The lend changes the wetting characteristics of the sintering liquid which serves to increase the tensile strength to 440 Mpa. a 40% increase over unmodified aIloys. Current research is predominantly aimed at the development of metal matrix composites. which have a high specific modulus. good wear resistance and a tailorable coefficient of thermal expnnsion. By controlling particle clustering and by engineering the ceramic/matrix interface in order to enhance sintering. very attractive properties can be achicved in the ns-sintered state. I\t an ils-sintered density ilpproaching 99%. these new experimental alloys hnve a modulus of 130 Gpa and an ultimate tensile strength of 212 Mpa in the T4 temper. In contest. unreinforcecl aluminum has a modulus of just 70 Gpa.
