  • The effects of welding conditions of gas metal arc welding on the elements loss of solid wire, oxygen content and impact toughness of weld metals were studied. Deoxidizing elements loss was increased with increase of arc voltage in both short-circuit transfer mode and globular transfer mode. It is believed that increase of arc voltage results in increase of reaction time between elements in the droplet and surrounding gas at the end of wire and in the arc column. Based on the thermodynamic equilibrium model, the oxygen content of weld metal can be predicted with the content of silicon and manganese as following : [%O] = $K([%Si][%Mn])^{-0.25}$, K = -15518/T+6.01. The equilibrium temperature was dependent on shielding gas, and it was 187$0^{\circ}C$ for $CO_2$ gas and 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 20%$CO_2$-80%Ar gas. The oxygen content of weld metal which shows maximum impact toughness was varied with deoxidizing alloy system of wires, 0.041 wt% for Si-Mn type wire and 0.026 wt% for Si-Mn-Ti type wire.

  • I consider the structure of steady wave system which is admitted by the continuum equations for materials that undergo phase transformations with exothermic chemical reaction. In particular, the dynamic phase front structures between liquid and gas phases, and solid and liquid phases are computationally investigated. Based on the one-dimensional continuum shock structure analysis, the present approach can estimate the nano-width of waves that are present in combustion. For illustration purpose, n-heptane is used in the evaporation and condensation analysis and HMX is used in the melting and freezing analysis of energetic materials of interest. On-going effort includes extension of this idea to include broad range of liquid and solid fuels, such as rocket propellants.

  • This study presents a review on Chemical looping combustion (CLC) development, design aspects and modeling. The CLC is in fact an unmixed combustion based on the transfer of oxygen to the fuel by a solid oxygen carrier material avoiding the direct contact between air and fuel. The CLC process is considered as a very promising combustion technology for power plants and chemical industries due to its inherent capability of $CO_2$ capturing, which avoids extra separation costs of the of $CO_2$ from the rest of flue gases. This review covers the issues related to oxygen carrier materials. The modeling works are reviewed and different aspects of modeling are considered, as well. The main drawbacks and future research and prospects are remarked.

  • A metal organic framework-supported Nickel nanoparticle (Ni-MOF-5) was successfully synthesized using a simple impregnation method. The obtained solid acid catalyst was characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalyst was highly crystalline with good thermodynamic stability (up to $400^{\circ}C$) and high surface area ($699m^2g^{-1}$). The catalyst was studied for the oxidation of ethyl benzene, and the results were monitored via gas chromatography (GC) and found that the Ni-MOF-5 catalyst was highly effective for ethyl benzene oxidation. The conversion of ethyl benzene and the selectivity for acetophenone were 55.3% and 90.2%, respectively.

  • This study is aimed to characterize the combustion behavior of solid fuel in the various types of the combustors: stoker, rotary kiln and fluidized bed type combustors. Three different types of reduced-scale combustors are introduced, and temperatures and flue gas compositions are measured for various fuel sizes, water contents, initial temperature, and air flow rates. In case of the rotary kiln combustor, effects of rotating speed of the combustor are also investigated. Mean carbon conversion time (MCCT) and flame propagation rate (FPR) are used for the quantitative analysis. It is revealed that the reaction rates of the fuel are significantly influenced by the fuel characteristics, type of the combustors and air flow rate. Major design parameters for each type of the combustors are summarized through the reduced-scaled model analysis.

  • Catalytic chlorination of chlorobenzene was studied in vapor phase using various solid-acid catalysts such as silica-alumina, alumina, zeolite and a modified clay prepared by impregnating bentonite with ferric chloride. The conversions of both chlorine gas and chlorobenzene showed high over silica-alumina, alumina and modified clay catalysts. However relatively large amounts of polychlorinated benzene derivatives were also observed. The active species of catalytic activity in chlorination of chlorobenzene in vapor phase were proved to be as Lewis acid sites by in-situ IR experiments. The strength of Lewis acid sites which were effective for the vapor-phase chlorination seemed to be having Hammett acidity Ho >-3.0. The selectivity to dichlorobenzenes was proved to be high over the zeolite catalyst due to their shape-selective properties. p-Dichlorobenzene or dichlorobenzene selectivities were improved more or less by changing the reaction conditions.

  • There is a growing interest in hydrogen energy utilization since an alternative energy development has been demanded due to the depletion of fossil fuels. Hydrogen is produced by the reforming reaction of natural gas and biogas, and the electrolysis of water. An solid oxide electrolyte cell (SOEC) is reversible system that generates hydrogen by electrolyzing the superheated steam or producing the electricity from a fuel cell by hydrogen. If the water can be converted into steam by waste heat from other processes it is more efficient for high-temperature electrolysis to convert steam directly. The reasons are based upon the more favorable thermodynamic and electrochemical kinetic conditions for the reaction. In the present study, steam at over 180℃ and 3.4 bars generated from a boiler were converted into superheated steam at over 700℃ and 3 bars using a cylindrical steam superheater as well as the waste heat of the exhaust gas at 900℃ from a solid refuse fuel combustor. Superheated steam at over 700℃ was then supplied to a high-temperature SOEC to increase the hydrogen production efficiency of water electrolysis. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted on the effects of the number of 90° elbow connector for piping, insulation types and insulation layers of pipe on the exit temperature using a commercial Fluent simulator. For two pre-heater injection method of steam inlet and ceramic wool insulation of 100 mm thickness, the highest inlet temperature of SOEC was 744℃ at 5.9 bar.

  • The yield of oil was rapidly increased at $440^{\circ}C$ compared to $400^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ when the isothermal pyrolysis of waste ship lubricating oil was carried out in tubular type reactor, and pyrolysis was almost finished within 30 min. The yield of gas was decreased depending on the reaction temperature in which that of solid was not much changed. Pyrolysis experiments of waste ship lubricating oil were carried out with used ZSM-5 produced from a petrochemical process. The yield of gas was highly increased in the case of used ZSM-5 and fresh ZSM-5 compared to the case without catalyst. The produced oil and gas were almost constant for fresh ZSM-5 and used ZSM-5 at the same reaction temperature. In the reaction temperature $400{\sim}440^{\circ}C$, the selectivity of $C_5-C_{11}$ was two times higher with fresh ZSM-5 and used ZSM-5 than the case without catalyst.

  • The pure crystalline $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder has been prepared by a simple solid state reaction of $Li_2CO_3$ and $V_2O_3$ precursors under nitrogen gas containing 10 mol % hydrogen gas flow. The structure of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was analyzed using Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The stoichiometric $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was used as anode active material for lithium secondary batteries. Its electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and constant current methods using lithium foil electrode. The observed specific discharge capacity and charge capacity were 360 mAh/g and 260 mAh/g during the first cycle, respectively. In addition, the cyclic efficiency of this cell was 72.2% in the first cycle. The specific capacity of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode rapidly declines as the current rate increases and retains only 30 % of the capacity of 0.1C rate at 1C rate. The crystallinity of the $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode decrease as discharge reaction proceeds. However, the relative intensity of main peaks was almost recovered when the cell was charged up to 1.5 V.

  • YSZ/LSM composite cathode was fabricated by dip-coating of YSZ sol on the internal pore surface of a LSM cathode followed by sintering at low temperature (800-100$0^{\circ}C$) The YSZ coating significantly increased the TPB(Triple Phase Boundary) where the gas the electrode and the electrolyte were in contact with each other. Sinter the formation of resistive materials such as La2Zr2O7 or SrZrO3 was prevented due to the low processing temperature and TPB was increased due to the YSZ film coating the electrode resistance (Rel) was reduced about 100 times compared to non-modified cathode. From the analysis of a.c impedance it was shown that microstructural change of the cathode caused by YSZ film coating affected the oxygen reduction reaction. In the case of non-modified cathode the RDS (rate determining step) was electrode reactions rather than mass transfer or the oxygen gas diffusion in the experimental conditions employed in this study ($600^{\circ}C$-100$0^{\circ}C$ and 0,01-1 atm of Po2) for the YSZ film coated cathode however the RDS involved the oxygen diffusion through micropores of YSZ film at high temperature of 950-100$0^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure of 0.01-0.03 atm.
