Simple and rapid sample preparation method for trace elements in foods of animal origin using ultra high pressure microwave digestion system (UHP/MDS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP/AES) were developed. 1. For the digestion of sample using UHP-MDS, 20% nitric acid (v/v) was the most suitable solvent for the determination of trace elements in foods of animal origin. 2. The optimal digestion conditions for UHP-MDS were as follows: final temperature $180^{\circ}C$, final pressure 400 PSI, and magnetic power 900 W in the solid sample. For the liquid sample final temperature $170^{\circ}C$, final pressure 300 PSI and magnetic power 700 W were optimal conditions. 3. As result of interlaboratory test, the average recovery rate of the for solid sample were 88.3~99.1% for As, 82.4~93.3% for Cd, 89.2~101.2% for Hg and 86.5~93.8% for Pb, respectively. In liquid sample, it were 87.0~96.8% for As, 80.9~96.6% for Cd, 87.5~91.2% for Hg and 91.4~95.5% for Pb, respectively. 4. The average coefficient variation rate were 3.3~15.9% for solid sample and 2.9~10.8% for liquid sample.
This research focused on the solid and nitrate removal efficiency in a solid digestion-denitrification column. The 20 L up-flow column consisted of 18 L acrylic column with 2 L down-comer inlet tube located in the middle. In the first part, the wastewater with high suspended solids from the Tilapia fish tank was applied into the sedimentation unit at 5 variable flow rates i.e., 11.25, 25.71, 60, 105.88 and 360 L/h. The results indicated that the flow rate of 11.25 L/h (0.57 m/h) gave the highest solid removal efficiency of $72.72%{\pm}8.24%$. However, the total suspended solids removal was highest at 360 L/h (18.13 m/h). In the second part, methanol was added as an external organic carbon source for denitrification process in a hybrid column containing settled solids. The COD:N ratios of 0.5:1, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1 and 6:1 were investigated and compared with control without methanol addition. This experiment was operated at the HRT of 1 h with 450 L wastewater from recirculating aquaculture pond containing 100 mg-N/L sodium nitrate. The results indicated that the COD:N ratio of 3:1 gave the highest nitrate removal efficiency of $33.32%{\pm}21.18%$ with the denitrification rate of 5,102.88 mg-N/day.
With benefits to the human health, environment, economy, and energy, anaerobic digestion (AD) systems have attracted remarkable attention within the scientific community. Anaerobic digestion system is created from (bio)reactors to perform a series of bi-metabolism steps including hydrolysis/acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. By considering the physical separation of the digestion steps above, AD systems can be classified into single-stage (all digestion steps in one reactor) and multi-stage (digestion steps in various reactors). Operation of the AD systems does not only depend on the type of digestion system but also relies on the interaction among growth factors (temperature, pH, and nutrients), the type of reactor, and operating parameters (retention time, organic loading rate). However, these interactions were often reviewed inadequately for the single-stage digestion systems. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of both single-stage and multi-stage systems as well as the influence of the growth factors, operating conditions, and the type of reactor on them. From those points, the advantages, disadvantages, and application range of each system are well understood.
The anaerobic digestion of food waste effluent through single- and two-phase process was estimated and compared in this study. The treatment efficiencies for total solid(TS), volatile solid(VS), tCOD(total COD) and sCOD(soluble COD) were invariably higher in the single-phase process, which was accounted for by the fact that the treatment efficiency of organic wastes usually showed an inverse relationship with organic loading rate in the anaerobic digestion. In fact, the organic loading rate was lower for single-phase process. The concentration of tCOD were significantly lower in two-phase process but much more biogas was produced, compared to single-phase anaerobic digestion process, which might be explained partly by the relatively higher stability of two-phase process resulting from the separation of acid phase from methane phase.

The optimal conditions are obtained for the decomposition of solid radioactive wastes, including ion exchange resin, zeolite, active charcoal, and sludge from nuclear power plant. In the process of decomposing the radioactive wastes were used the microwave acid digestion method with mixed acid. The solution after acid digestion by the following method was colorless and transparent. Each solution was analyzed with ICP-AES and AAS and the recovery yield for 5 different elements added the simulated radioactive wastes were over 94%. As an effective pre-treatment, the proposed microwave acid digestion conditions concerning the chemical trait of each radioactive waste are expected to be generally applied to above-mentioned radioactive wastes from nuclear power plant hereafter.

The influence of fiber content of hay (low-fiber 47% NDF and high-fiber 62% NDF of DM) and concentrate level (high 50% and low 20% of ration DM) on chewing activity, passage rate and nutrient digestibility were tested on four restrict-fed (11.1 to 13.7 kg DM/d) Holstein cows in late lactation. Aspects of ruminal fermentation and digesta particle size distribution were also investigated on two ruminally cannulated (100 mm i.d.) cows of the same group of animals. All digestion parameters studied were more affected by the fiber content of the hay and its ratio to non structural carbohydrates than by the concentrate level. Giving a diet of high-fiber (62% NDF) hay and low concentrate level (20%) increased chewing activity but decreased solid passage rate and total digestibility of nutrients due to a limited availability of fermentable OM in the late cut fiber rich hay. A supplementation of high-fiber hay with 50% concentrate in the diet seems to improve the ruminal digestion of cell contents, whilst a depression of the ruminal fiber digestibility was not completely avoided. Giving a diet of low-fiber (47% NDF) hay and high concentrate level (50%) reduced markedly the chewing and rumination activity, affected negatively the rumen conditions and, consequently, the ruminal digestion of fiber. A reduction of the concentrate level from 50 to 20% in the diet of low-fiber hay improved the rumen conditions as reflected by an increase of the ruminal solid passage rate and of fiber digestibility and in a decrease of the concentration of large particles and of the mean particle size of the rumen digesta and of the faeces. Generally, it can be summarised that, (i) concentrate supplementation is not a strategy to overcome limitations of low quality (fiber-rich) hay, and (ii) increase of the roughage quality is an effective strategy in ruminant nutrition, especially when concentrate availability for ruminants is limited.

Feasibility of co-digestion was investigated by a series of anaerobic batch experiments using sewage sludge, swine waste, and food waste leachate as substrates. The organic solid wastes were collected from M city, where the daily productions of sewage sludge, swine waste, and food waste leachate were 178 ton/d, 150 ton/d, and 8 ton/d, respectively. Both swine waste and food waste leachate showed superior methane yields, methane productivities, and organic pollutant removal efficiencies compared to sewage sludge. Co-digestion of the total amounts of organic solid wastes would enhance methane production by 5.60 times $(530\;m^{3}\;CH_{4}/d\;{\rightarrow}\;2,968\;m^{3}\;CH_{4}/d)$. However, it also increase the amount of digestate by 1.88 times with 3.79 to 4.92 times higher pollutants (chemical oxygen demands total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) loading rates. Co-digestion of organic solid wastes is a valid strategy to enhance the performance of an anaerobic sludge digester and the energy independence of a wastewater treatment plant. Anyhow, the increment of digestate with higher pollutant loading would need a careful counterplan in the operation of the main stream of the treatment plant.

We coordinated the experiments with ozone pretreatment and two-phase anaerobic digestion using solid-liquid separation to raise the efficiency of sludge volume reduction and obtained the following results. The pre-treatment with ozone reduced the solid concentration in the average of TSS $8.3{\pm}2.0%$ TSS and $9.2{\pm}}2.8%$ VSS. Of the organic material, TCOD decreased $5.1{\pm}2.4%$, but SCOD showed $72{\pm}6.5%$ increased, which was due to destruction of the cell wall and dissolution of icell media by the powerful oxidative stress of ozone. During the two-phase anaerobic digestion process, we achieved the reduction of $21.5{\pm}3.4%$ TSS, $20.2{\pm}8.4%$ VSS, $32.1{\pm}7.9%$ TCOD and $22.1{\pm}7.2%$ SCOD in average. The maximum methane gas production were 177.6 mL per g TSS, 210.8 mL per g VSS, 127.0 mL per g TCOD and 1452.0 mL per g SCOD, respectively. Solid material reduction through the two-phase anaerobic digestion and MLE (Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) processes were 93.8% of TSS and 92.0% of VSS. We concluded that suggested two-phase anaerobic digestion and MLE process could achieve the reasonable production of biogas and a maximum reduction of the sludge volume.
The feasibility of municipal sewage sludge digestion was investigated by using thermophilic anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR). One-day settle time was enough for the high performance of solid-liquid separation. The conversion of semi-continuous mode to sequencing batch mode is easily achieved without any adverse effects, although the large amount of sludge equal to the volume ratio of 0.3~06 to reactor volume was added in the feed step of the start-up. The ASBRs had higher conversion capability of organics to biogas than the control reactor. Gas yields of the ASBRs were increased by the average of 50% over the control reactor across a range of hydraulic retention time(HRT)s from 10days to 5days. The thermophilic reactors showed higher gas production than mesophilic reactor. Removal efficiencies of organic matter exceeded 80% on the basis of supernatants, except that at the reactor. Solid-liquid separation was essential in the performance of the ASBR, especially, at the lower HFT. The ASBRs were highly efficient in the retention of activated biomass within the reactor. thus compensating for increased equivalent organic loading rate through increased solids retention times followed by the increased solids, while maintaining shorter HRTs.
