  • Three PEA (Pulverised Fuel Ash) samples, which were fresh, 17 and some 40 years weathered, were collected from two major British power plants. Batch leaching tests with these samples using distilled water and simulated industrial leachate showed higher amounts of element liberation from fresh ash, including Ca, Na, K, S (as $SO^{2-}_4$, $Cr_{total}$, Cu, Li Ni, Mo and CI and this seems to indicate their surface association and easier dissolution when contact with water. On the contrary Mg, Al, Ba, Si, V, As and Se do not show such readily leachable concentrations and these elements might be more associated with glass fraction in PFA particle rather than surface. Although element concentrations in the weathered ash are much lower than those in the initial leachate from the fresh ash, elements are still detected as resonable concentrations, with rather constant levels and this seems to demonstrate the element release from unstable glass phase of PFA particle. Fe, Ca, $Cr_{total}$, Cu, Ni, Zn and Hg were removed from the synthetic leachate by PFA and this is also confirmed by gain in solid PFA. The order of element retention is Meaford weathered ash > Drax weathered ash > Drax fresh ash in decreasing order and this conforms with the degree of weathering. Namely, the more wethered, the more wethered, the more effective in metal retention from the synthetic leachate.

  • The purposes of this study was to describe the clinical correlation of mass size and gestational age, prognostic factors in sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) at a tertiary pediatric surgery, University of Ulsan College of Medicine and Asan Medical Center (AMC), Seoul, Korea. Fifty five patients admitted to the AMC with a SCT between May 1989 and April 2013 were included in this retrospective review. Mean follow up was 861 days. Mean maternal age at delivery was $30{\pm}2.7$ year, mean gestational age (GA) was $36.9{\pm}3.6$ wks, and preterm delivery was 21.8%. Birth body weight was $3182{\pm}644$ g and male vs. female ratio was 1:2.05. We can't find significant difference between Caesarean section and maternal age at delivery (p =0.817). But, caesarean section was favored by gestational age (p = 0.002), larger tumor size (p =0.029) or higher tumor weight fraction rate to birth body weight (p =0.024). Type I was 13, II 21, III 17, and IV 3 according to Altman et al. classification. The tumor component was predominantly cystic(> 50%) in 73.1 %. And the majority histological classification of tumors were mature teratoma (70.3%). The motality rate was 5.5%. Three patients expired because of postpartum bleeding, post-op bleeding related complication such as DIC. SCT recurred in four patients. The interval between first and second operation was $206.2{\pm}111.0$ d (range 53~325 d). In two patients, serum AFP levels were elevated at a regular checkup without any symptom, and subsequent imaging studies revealed SCT. The most common cause of death was bleeding and bleeding related complication. So Caesarean section and active peripartum and perioperative management will be needed for huge solid SCT. In the case of Yolk sac tumor or huge immature teratoma, possibility of recurrence have to be always considered, so follow up by serial AFP and MRI is important for SCT management.

  • The heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) system is a very important part of an automotive vehicle: it controls the microclimate inside the passenger's compartment and removes the frost or mist that is produced in cold/rainy weather. In this study, the numerical analysis of the defrost duct in an HVAC system and the de-icing pattern is carried out using commercial CFX-code. The mass flow distribution and flow structure at the outlet of the defrost duct satisfied the duct design specification. For analyzing the de-icing pattern, additional grid generation of solid domain of ice and glass is pre-defined for conductive heat transfer. The flow structure near the windshield, streakline, and temperature fields clearly indicate that the de-icing capacity of the given defrost duct configuration is excellent and that it can be operated in a stable manner. In this paper, the unsteady changes in temperature, water volume fraction, and static enthalpy at four monitoring points are discussed.

  • Defatted rice bran was microparticulated using fluidized bed opposed jet mill and air-classified at different air classifying wheel speed (ACWS) in Turboplex classifier. The median particle size and the standard deviation decreased, and concomitantly the specific surface area increased generally with increasing ACWS. The protein, fat and ash contents of the recovered rice bran increased with ACWS. The contents of minerals; magnesium, zinc, iron and manganese; increased positively with ACWS. The phytic acid content, however, was slightly higher at middle ACWS. The dietary fiber content was highest in the ACWS 15,000 rpm fraction showing 31.47%. Higher ACWS resulted in lighter colored powder. The water holding capacity (WHC) showed the maximum value at ACWS 12,000 rpm and decreased with increasing ACWS, while the oil holding capacity (OHC) increased with ACWS. The rheological property of the microparticulated rice bran/water suspension fitted to the linear model. The yield stress and viscosity of the suspension increased with ACWS. The shape of microparticulated rice bran at ACWS 21,000 rpm was spherical, and the median particle size was $3.7{\mu}m$. When cake was prepared with substitution of microparticulated rice bran at 5%, the cake height and volume increased remarkably.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate changes of soybean curd yield according to the extension of soaking time during manufacturing of soybean curd. To investigate those changes systematically, transmission electron microscopy and disc-gel electrophoresis were used. The soybean curd yield was increased from 45.0% to 50.5% and 55.4% respectively as soaking time is extended from 5 hours to 10 and 24 hours. The solid extraction and soybean milk coagulation were also increased according to the extension of soaking time. From disc-gel electrophoresis patterns of soybean milk protein and soybean curd protein, numbers of band were increased and major band thickened by expending the soaking time. Most of high molecular bands of soybean milk protein were transfered to soybean curd. Crude 7S proteins of soybean milk and soybean curd in dis-gel electrophoresis were appeared to be 4 and 5 bands respectively, and crude 11S proteins of soybean milk and soybean curd were appeared to be 9 and 8 bands respectively. Of soybean milk bands, most of 11S component transfered to soybean curd. Transmission electron photomicrographs revealed that the dimension of each protein body became larger and the numbers of spherosome around the protein bodies in unit area fewer by extending the soaking time of soybean.

  • This study assessed the feasibility of a dual-channel (DC) compound method for film dosimetry. The red channel (RC) is usually used to ensure dosimetric quality using a conventional fraction dose because the RC is more accurate at low doses within 3 Gy than is the green channel (GC). However, the RC is prone to rapid degradation of sensitivity at high doses, while degradation of the GC is slow. In this study, the DC compound method combining the RC and GC was explored as a means of providing accurate film dosimetry for high doses. The DC compound method was evaluated at various dose distributions using EBT3 film inserted in a solid-water phantom. Measurements with $10{\times}20cm^2$ radiation field and $60^{\circ}$ dynamic-wedge were done. Dose distributions acquired using the RC and GC were analyzed with root-mean-squares-error (RMSE) and gamma analyses. The DC compound method was used based on the RC after correcting the GC for high doses in the gamma analysis. The RC and GC produced comparatively more accurate RMSE values for low and high doses, respectively. Gamma passing rates with an acceptance criterion of 3%/3 mm revealed that the RC provided rapid reduction in the high dose region, while the GC displayed a gradual decrease. In the whole dose range, the DC compound method had the highest agreement (93%) compared with single channel method using either the RC (80%) or GC (85%). The findings indicate that the use of DC compound method is more appropriate in dosimetric quality assurance for radiotherapy using high doses.

  • The atomic-nano scale structures of multi-component aluminosilicate glasses have not been well understood in spite of its implications fur dynamics and generation of magma in the natural system due to lack of suitable spectroscopic and scattering experiments. Here, we report O-17 MAS and isotropic projection of 3QMAS NMR spectra for quaternary Na-Ca silicate glasses $[(CaO)_x(Na_2O)_{1-x}]\;(A1_2O_3)_{0.5}(SiO_2)_6,\;CNAS)$ at 14.1 Tesla where atomic configurations around bridging oxygen (Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al) and non bridging oxygen (Na-O-Si, Ca-O-Si, (Na, Ca)-O-Si) are partially resolved. With increasing Na content, the fraction of Na-O-Si increases while those for bridging oxygens remain constant. The Na/Ca ratio apparently affects the peak widths of bridging oxygen peaks (e.g., Si-O-Si)) and thus the topological entropy as well as chemical shifts of the bridging oxygen peaks, implying that both BOs and NBOs are strongly interacting with network modifying cations The effect of cation field strength on the degree of Al-avoidance was also discussed.

  • The cytotoxic activity of MeOH extracts of the freeze-dried silkworm (Bombyx mori)-derived materials (4th instar larvae, female and mate pupae, virgin female and male adult), dried Beauveria bassiana-infected silkworm larvae, dried feces from the 4th instar larvae B. mori, and dried mulberry (Morus alba)-derived materials (leaves, fruits, root barks) in vitro was evaluated by sulforhodamine B assay, using the five human solid A 549 lung, SK-OV-2 ovarian, SK-MEL-2 melanoma, XF-498 CNS and HCT-15 colon tumor cell lines. The responses varied with both cell line and material used. The 70% hot MeOH extract of B. mori feces (BFH) revealed potent cytotoxic activity against model tumor cell lines whereas moderate activity was observed from the MeOH extract of B. mori feces. M. alba root barks, and M. alba fruits. The other test materials were ineffective. Because of its potent cytotoxic activity, the activity of each solvent fraction from the BFH was determined. Chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions showed the most potent cytotoxic activity. In conclusion, our results may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological actions of B. mori feces. M. alba root barks, and M. alba fruits.

  • In the numerical simulation of wave fields using a multi-phase flow model that considers simultaneous flows of materials with different states such as gas, liquid and solid, there is need of an accurate representation of the interface separating the fluids. We adopted an algebraic interface capturing method called tangent of hyperbola for interface-capturing(THINC) method for the capture of the free-surface in computations of multi-phase flow simulations instead of geometrical-type methods such a volume of fluid(VOF) method. The THINC method uses a hyperbolic tangent functions to represent the surface, and compute the numerical flux for the fluid fraction functions. One of the remarkable advantages of THINC method is its easy applicability to incorporate various numerical codes based on Navier-Stokes solver because it does not require the extra geometric reconstruction needed in most of VOF-type methods. Several tests were carried out in order to investigate the advection of interfaces and to verify the applicability of the THINC method to wave fields based on the one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows (TWOPM). The numerical results revealed that the THINC method is able to track the interface between air and water separating the fluids although its algorithm is fairly simple.
