For optimum scale design of containment area, a series of laboratory tests using column were performed in this study as followings; sedimentation test and self-weight consolidation test for dredged soil, and suspended solid concentration test for supernatant. Containment area has been designed and evaluated, based on field condition and concentration of suspended solid of effluent water. In addition, the relation between width of containment area and target concentration of suspended solid was analyzed. The results show that concentration of suspended solid decreases as the width of containment area decreases and the length of containment area increases. It was also observed that influence of change in ponding depth should be considered to predict the change in suspended solid concentration in supernatant discharged as disposal is conducted; the lower target suspended solid concentration of effluent water, the more important.

Particles in liquid-solid suspension flow might enhance or suppress the rate of heat transfer and turbulence depending on their size and concentration. The heat transfer characteristics of liquid-solid suspension in turbulent flow are not well understood due to the complexibility of interaction between solid particles and turbulence of the carrier fluid. In this study, the heat transfer coefficients of liquid-solid mixtures are investigated using a double pipe heat exchanger with suspension flows in the inner pipe. Experiments are carried out using spherical fly ash particles with mass median diameter ranging from 4 to $78{\mu}m$. The volume concentration of solids in the slurry ranged from 0 to 50% and Reynolds number ranged from 4,000 to 11,000. The heat transfer coefficient of liquid-solid suspension to water flow is found to increase with decreasing particle diameter. The heat transfer coefficient increases with particle volume concentration exhibiting the highest heat transfer enhancement at the 3% solid volume concentration and then gradually decreases. A correlation for heat transfer to liquid-solid flows in a horizontal pipe is presented.

In this study, the mixing process of two-phase flow generated by two jets with height difference is analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid particles with air. The height difference between the main jet and the secondary jet is changed into three kinds(0, 32.5, 47.5mm). The velocity vector field, concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the height difference of two jets through the two nozzles increases, the solid particle recirculation zone and the dense zone in the combustion chamber become large. The solid particle concentration at the center of the combustion chamber gets dense because the particle velocity remains slow due to the existence of the solid particle recirculation zone. The particle concentration in the combustion chamber can also be influenced by the hight difference of two jets.
It is necessary to investigate methods for improvement by diagnosing sludge settling characteristics on inflow of slurry to thickener. The results of the settling tests are correlated to determine zone settling velocities at the various sludge solids concentrations. Conditioning of WTP residuals is generally done by either chemical or physical treatment. The settling test was conducted with 1m columns dosing polymer to WTP residuals at various solids concentration. The estimated results for dosing to WTP residuals for a sludge of 2,100 ~ 16,012 mg/L solids concentration were the zone settling velocities of 48.38 ~ 6.8 m/day, supernatant solid concentration of 3.2 ~ 19 mg/L and solid flux of $101.6{\sim}317.61kg/m^3{\cdot}day$. The values for non-polymer treatment were the zone settling velocities of 28.37 ~ 0.12 m/day, supernatent solid concentration of 8.5 ~ 108 mg/L and solid flux of $59.58{\sim}1.92kg/m^2{\cdot}day$. The limiting solid flux value by Yoshioka methods was $4.0kg\;TS/m^3{\cdot}day$ for Non-polymer and $228.0kg\;TS/m^3{\cdot}day$ for dosing polymer. These results are to indicate a possibility of improvement on the thickening characteristics and the quality of supernatant as increasing the settling velocities by dosing polymer to WTP residuals.

Pollutants in aquaculture system effluent mostly originated from solid wastes including uneaten feed and excreta of cultured species. In this research, DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) unit is suggested as an integrated solid control unit especially as a form of IIBG(Inline Injection Bubble Generation) process in aquaculture system. Solid removal performance of DAF unit was examined under various operation and salinity conditions with turbidity and suspended solid. Solid waste removal efficiencies were found to be affected by operation conditions including saturator pressure, recycle ratio, coagulant concentration. Solid removal efficiency was higher under higher saturator pressure and recycle ratio under which condition larger number of bubbles is generated. Coagulant is thought to have important role in creating bubble-particle aggregate by showing better removal efficiency with higher concentration. However higher saline water showed less effectiveness in removing solids by DAF(IIBG). Application of DAF(IIBG) process also showed additional effect in phosphate removal and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) supply. Phosphate existed in polluted water was removed up to 46% after treatment, which is thought to attribute to aluminium phosphate precipitation. And DO concentration was found to increase over 50% of initial saturation concentration after the injection of micro-bubbles. Through experiments on solid removal from aquaculture effluent, DAF(IIBG) process is estimated to be effective solid control method. This property can help aquaculture system being installed and operated simply and effectively.
In this paper, model experiments in the laboratory were carried out to predict the effluent concentrations of suspended solid in containment of dumping dredged soils and test results were compared with results estimated by the currently used design method. Model tests of simulating dumping the dredged soils with a pump dredger in field were performed with changing the influent concentration and the length of containment and effluent concentration of suspended solid with time were measured during tests. As results of comparing test results about effluent concentration with those estimated from the design method by US Army COE(1987), they were confirmed to be in relatively good agreements.
This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of suspended solid concentration in small forest watershed, Hwacheon, Gangwondo. For five rainfall events from July 2013 to August 2013, rainfall, discharge, and suspended solid load has been measured. The results showed that the fist flush effect was observed for suspended solid in each rainfall event, sediment rating curve was obtained with $y=30.029x^{1.573}$ at rising limb and $y=12.902x^{1.8827}$ at falling limb, and EMC (event mean concentration) of suspended solid was calculated to 9.4 mg/L. EMC was compared to the values from the watershed that has various land use types and EMC from forest watershed was much lower that from the crop, paddy or low covered forest watershed.
The effects of solvent type and concentration, solid/liquid ratio, extraction time and repeated extraction on recovery of keratinase from solid-state fermentation (SSF) of chicken feather by a local Streptomyces sp. NRC 13S were investigated in order to establish the experimental conditions for keratinase yield. Among solvents tested, 0.5% (v/v) glycerol was the best. Box-Behnken design was used to investigate the effect of relevant variables on keratinase recovery. The factors investigated were solid/liquid ratio (1:1.66-1:6.66 g/mL), glycerol concentration (0.5-5% v/v) and repeated extraction (1-5 cycle). The results showed that the maximum recovery of keratinase (6933.3 U/gfs) was obtained using 0.5 (v/v) glycerol as extracting solvent, in a solid/liquid ratio of 1:5 and three extraction cycles.
Concentration fields of solid powder in a liquid fuel were quantitatively measured by a visualization technique. The measurement system consists of a camcoder and three LCD monitors. The solid powder (glass powder) were filled in a head tank which was installed over a main mixing tank ($D{\times}H$, $310{\times}370mm$). The main mixing tank was filled with JetA1 fuel oil. With a sudden opening of the upper tank by pressurized nitrogen gas with 1.9 bar, the solid powder were poured into the JetA1 oil. An impeller type agitator was being rotated in the mixing with 700 rpm for the enhancements of mixing. Uniform visualization for the mixing flow field was made by the light from the three LCD monitors, and the visualized images were captured by the camcoder. The color images captured by the camcoder The color information of the captured images was decoded into three principle colors R, G, and B to get quantitattive relations between the concentrations of the solid powder and the colors. To get better fitting for the strong non-linearity between the concentration and the color, a neural network which has strong fitting performances was used. Analyses on the transient mixing of the solid powders were quantitatively made.
The bioleaching of heavy metals from fly ash was performed by Thiobacillus thiooxidans MET isolated from the enrichment culture of an anaerobically digested sludge. The effect of solid concentrations on the efficiency of metal leaching was studied in shaken flasks. In the range of solid concentrations 20 g.L$^1$to 100 g.L$^1$T. thiooxidans MET oxidized S$^{0}$ to sulfate without any lag period. The final pH of slurry solution was decreased to below pH 1, and the final oxide-redox potential (ORP) was increased to over 420 mV in the solid concentrations below 100 g.L$^1$. However, the initial lag period of 4 to 8 days was required to obtain the pH reduction and ORP increase of the slurry solutions in the range of solid concentrations 150 g.L$^1$to 300 g.L$^1$. The sulfur oxidation rate of T. thiooxidans MET in 20~100 g.L$^1$solid concentrations was 0.70~0.75 g-S.L$^1$ㆍ d$^1$, but its sulfur oxidation activity was remarkably inhibited with increasing solid concentration over 150 g.L$^1$. Increasing fly ash solids concentration in the range of solids concentration 20 g.L$^1$ to 200 g.L$^1$decreased the removal efficiency of Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr and Pb. The solubilization of heavy metals from fly ash was strongly correlated with the pH value of slurry solution. When the pH of slurry solution was reduced to 3, the solubilization process of Zn, Cu and Mn started, and their solubilization efficiency of Zn, Cu and Mn was progressively increased below pH 2. However, the solubilization process of Cr and Pb started at pH 2.5 and 2.0, respectively.
