  • CNUSAIL-1, to be launched into low-earth orbit, is a cubesat-class satellite equipped with a $2m{\times}2m$ solar sail. One of CNUSAIL's missions is to deploy its solar sail system, thereby deorbiting the satellite, at the end of the satellite's life. This paper presents the design results of the attitude control system for CNUSAIL-1, which maintains the normal vector of the sail by a 3-axis active attitude stabilization approach. The normal vector can be aligned in two orientations: i) along the anti-nadir direction, which minimizes the aerodynamic drag during the nadir-pointing mode, or ii) along the satellite velocity vector, which maximizes the drag during the deorbiting mode. The attitude control system also includes a B-dot controller for detumbling and an eigen-axis maneuver algorithm. The actuators for the attitude control are magnetic torquers and reaction wheels. The feasibility and performance of the design are verified in high-fidelity nonlinear simulations.

  • This study proposes a Passive Solar Chamber System (PSCS) as a passive method for reduction of building energy consumption. Through numerical analysis, the study quantitatively analyzes system performance and aims to provide foundational data for system design. For this purpose, the study configures different system operation modes seasonally and also computes thermal and ventilation performance of the system in accordance with design factors(solar radiation, air channel height and distance). System and ventilation efficiency increases along with increase in solar radiation and air channel distance; however, as the air channel height increases, the efficiencies showed a tendency to decrease. Upon installation of PSCS, an average of $98.23W/m^2$ of heat flux was introduced in the daytime for the month of January in comparison to walls with no PSCS installed. For the month of August, natural ventilation of $56.68m^3/h$ was shown to be supplied to the room.

  • In order to verify and take measures against a variety of troubles which cannot be predicted in a well-controlled laboratory, it is necessary that solar system should be experimented in an actual situation during a long period. Through this experiment it can be also understood how the load pattern and operational conditions expected in a design process become different to those in the actual running, which can be applied to a new system design. We installed 6 kW solar hot water heating system with a shower facility and operated during 7 months. As a result, average 8.3 persons took a shower a day; solar fraction is 71% and total collector efficiency is 40% during the periods from March to September. We confirmed several troubles encountered in the actual situation and considered practical center-measures.

  • Thermal design was conducted for a solar thermal storage system in a medium-temperature range between $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. The system was composed of heat pipes as heat carrier and molten salts as phase-change storage material. Each heat pipe penetrated through the storage system and had two heat-exchanging sections at both ends to interact with high-and low-temperature steams, while it exchanged heat with molten salts in the middle section. During a heat-storage mode, the heat pipes transferred heat from the hot steam at one side to the molten salts and it transferred heat from the molten salt to the cold steam at the other side during the heat-dissipating mode. A tube-bank type heat exchanger theory was applied to this design task to meet the required inlet and outlet temperatures of the steams depending on the operation modes. Several design variables were considered including the lengths of evaporator and condenser of a heat pipe, traverse and longitudinal pitches of the pipe, and the number of rows of the heat pipes for two different molten salt baths. An optimum design results were presented with discussion.

  • This paper describes a design strategy at conceptual design stage using RETScreen software tool for building application of renewable energy resources. Currently, government and public buildings are required to adopt renewable energy systems with a minimum requirement for the amount of renewable energy supply. Meanwhile, there is a certificate program for private office buildings to enhance propagation of renewable energy systems. When considering application of renewable energy systems to a building, it is worthwhile developing a method to determine optimal design sizes of renewable energy systems. In the paper, a design strategy is introduced with a couple of case studies to determine optimal capacities of each renewable energy system in a building and suggest to use the method to evaluate the system for the building certificate program and the mandatory renewable target program. Objective functions considered in the study are initial system cost and reduction of CO2 emissions from the system. In the optimization study, it is assumed that solar thermal collectors are installed to satisfy solar fraction of 60%. Other renewable energy systems such as ground-source heat pump, solar PV and non-renewable systems such as electric chiller and gas-fired boiler are sized using an optimal sizing method with RETScreen suggested the authors previously.

  • During daylight, the solar array of low earth orbit satellites harvests electrical power to operate satellites. The power conversion of the solar array is carried out by control of the operation point using the solar array regulator when the solar array faces the sunlight. Thus, the design of the solar array should comply with not only the power requirement of satellite system but also the input voltage requirement of the solar array regulator. In this paper, the design requirements of the solar array for low earth orbit satellites are defined, and the means of satisfying these requirements are described. In addition, the architecture of a multi-distributed interface is suggested to maximize the power harvested from a solar array having high temperature deviation between each panel. The power analysis in this paper shows the optimal number of multi-distributed interfaces with a converter.

  • Solar energy is one of the most important alternative energy sources which have been shown to meet high levels of heating and cooling demands in buildings. However, the efficiencies to satisfy these demands using solar energy significantly vary based on the characteristics of individual building. Therefore, this paper is focused on developing the methodology which can help to design optimal solar system for heating and cooling to be in cooperated within the existing buildings according to their load profiles. This research has established the Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) system which is composed of collectors, absorption chiller, boiler and heat storage tank. Each component of SHC system is analyzed and made by means of Modelica Language and Pistache tool is verified the results. Sequential approximate optimization (SAO) and meta-models determined to 15 design parameters to optimize SHC system. Finally, total coefficient of performance (COP) of the entire SHC system is improved approximately 7.3% points compared to total COP of the base model of the SHC system.

  • This paper is part of research and development for stand-alone solar system without commercial power supply. It implements firmware of controller for operation of stand-alone solar system by applying IoT technology and also develops communication modules that allow multiple solar lamps to send and receive data through wireless network. The controller of the developed stand-alone solar system can effectively charge the power generated by the solar module, taking into account the battery's charge and discharge characteristics. It also has the advantage of attaching wireless communication modules to solar lamp posts to establish wireless communication networks without incurring communication costs. In addition, by establishing IoT gateway middleware platform for each installation site, it forms a foundation to operate multiple solar lamp posts into multiple clusters. And, it is expected that the data collected in each cluster will be used to enable configuration and control of operational information, thereby inducing convenience and efficiency of remote operation and management.

  • This study was carried out solar heating system design for district heating and it's the performance analysis by experiment. This experimental system was installed in Bundang district heating area in the end of 2006. The flat plate and vacuum tube solar collector are combined in one system. So district heating water is heated first by flat plate solar collector and than by vacuum tube solar collector. This solar heating system has not a solar buffer tank and is operating with variable flow rate to obtain a setting temperature of $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. As a result, the daily solar thermal collection efficiency is about 30 to 40% for the plate type and 50 to 55% for the vacuum tube solar collector. It varied especially depend on the weather condition like as solar radiation and ambient temperature. This variable flow rate system can be also reduced much pumping power more than 50%.
