In this paper, an omnidirectional visible light detector was developed by making the detecting surface of a flexible solar cell in a cylindrical form, which has a uniform receiving pattern in the horizontal plane. This solar cell detector receives simultaneously multiple signal lights incident from different directions and provides electrical power to the ASK demodulator in the receiver. In experiments, time division transmission method was used to receive three signal lights incident from different directions to the solar cell detector. Each signal light was ASK modulated using a carrier of 40 kHz, and the synchronizing pulses required for time division transmission were generated by detecting the 120 Hz AC signal included in the indoor illumination lamp with Cds cells. This receiving structure is useful in constructing an $N{\times}1$ optical link in visible light communication.
In a solar coronagraph, the most important component is an occulter to block the direct light from the disk of the sun. Because the intensity of the solar outer corona is $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-10}$ times of that of the solar disk ($I_{\odot}$), it is necessary to minimize scattering at the optical elements and diffraction at the occulter. Using a Fourier optic simulation and a stray light test, we investigated the performance of a compact coronagraph that uses an external truncated-cone occulter without an internal occulter and Lyot stop. In the simulation, the diffracted light was minimized to the order of $7.6{\times}10^{-10}I_{\odot}$ when the cone angle ${\theta}_c$ was about $0.39^{\circ}$. The performance of the cone occulter was then tested by experiment. The level of the diffracted light reached the order of $6{\times}10^{-9}I_{\odot}$ at ${\theta}_c=0.40^{\circ}$. This is sufficient to observe the outer corona without additional optical elements such as a Lyot stop or inner occulter. We also found the manufacturing tolerance of the cone angle to be $0.05^{\circ}$, the lateral alignment tolerance was $45{\mu}m$, and the angular alignment tolerance was $0.043^{\circ}$. Our results suggest that the physical size of coronagraphs can be shortened significantly by using a cone occulter.

To create an environment for growing ginseng sprouts, we developed a solar module that partially transmits and disperses light. A G to G type light transmission and dispersion solar module was developed using glass with a mist pattern applied, and the light dispersion effect of the developed module was confirmed through illuminance measurement. The output of one module is approximately 260 W, and the configuration consists of 48 cells in series in 4 strings. The cultivation system where the developed module will be installed was developed in the form of a container, and three units of 2.6 kW (260 W x 10 EA). The inside of the cultivation system consists of a shading screen, air conditioner, ventilator, plastic pot, etc. to create an environment for cultivating sprout ginseng. As a result of actually planting sprout ginseng, it was confirmed through verification that the plants were grown without any problems.

CdTe thin-film solar cell technology is well known that it can theoretically improve its conversion efficiency and manufacturing costs compared to the conventional silicon solar cell technology, due to its optical band gap energy (about 1.45eV) for solar energy absorption, high light absorption capability and low cost requirements for producing solar cells. Although the prior studies obtained the high light absorption, CdTe thin film solar cell has not been come up to the sufficient efficiency yet. So, doping method was selected for the improvement of the electrical characteristics in CdTe solar cells. Some elements including Cu, Ag, Cd and Te were generally used for the p-dopant as substitutional acceptors in CdTe thin film. In this study, the sputtering-deposited CdTe thin film was immersed in $AgNO_3$ solution for ion exchange method to dope Ag ions. The effects of immersion temperature and Ag-concentration were investigated on the optical properties and electrical characteristics of CdTe thin film by using Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profile, UV-visible spectrophotometer, and a Hall effect measurement system. The best optical and electrical characteristics were sucessfully obtained by Ag doping at high temperature and concentration. The larger and more uniform diffusion of Ag ions made increase of the Ag ion density in CdTe thin film to decrease the series resistance as well as mede the faster diffusion of light by the metal ions to enhance the light absorption.

It has been recognized that solar water heating systems are economically inferior to conventional gas water-heaters and boilers using light oil as fuel in spite of having practical possibilities among other alternative energy facilities in Korea. The solar system, however, should be revaluated due to the sharp rise of oil prices recently. We have calculated the energy amount and cost through a series of research projects for the system by experiment and simulation, which lead to analyzing reliable life cycle costs. For the economic analysis, the gas water-heater and light oil boiler were taken as base cases while the solar systems implemented with these facilities were compared as alternatives. As a result, the solar system using the light oil as an auxiliary fuel surpassed the light oil boiler in economics. And a $50\%$ government subsidy for the initial cost is needed to maintain competitiveness with the gas hot-water heater. With this support, the simple payback period of the system can approach 12.8 years under $20\%$ additional curtailment of expenditure.
Many researches have been carried out to improve light absorption in the crystalline silicon solar cell fabrication. The rear reflection is applied to increase the path length of light, resulting in the light absorption enhancement and thus the efficiency improvement mainly due to increase in short circuit current. In this paper, we manufactured the silicon solar cell using the mono crystalline silicon wafers with $156{\times}156mm^2$, 0.5~3.0 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of resistivity and p-type. After saw damage removal, the dielectric film ($SiN_x$)on the back surface was deposited, followed by surface texturing in the KOH solution. It resulted in single-side texturing wafer. Then the dielectric film was removed in the HF solution. The silicon wafers were doped with phosphorus by $POCl_3$ with the sheet resistance 50 ${\Omega}/{\Box}$ and then the silicon nitride was deposited on the front surface by the PECVD with 80nm thickness. The electrodes were formed by screen-printing with Ag and Al paste for front and back surface, respectively. The reflectance and transmittance for the single-sided and double-sided textured wafers were compared. The double-sided textured wafer showed higher reflectance and lower transmittance at the long wavelength region, compared to single-sided. The completed crystalline silicon solar cells with different back surface texture showed the conversion efficiency of 17.4% for the single sided and 17.3% for the double sided. The efficiency improvement with single-sided textured solar cell resulted from reflectance increase on back surface and light absorption enhancement.

A new model about output power prediction of PV module with various tilted angles and cell to cell distances has been proposed in this paper. Light intensity arrived on a solar cell could be changed by characteristics of PV module materials. Refractive indices, thickness and absorption coefficients of glass, EVA, solar cell and Backsheet are used to predict output. Also, the incident angle of light is changed 0 to 90[$^{\circ}$] and cell to cell distances are 5, 10 15[mm]. Two types of light incident on a solar cell are considered which are direct to a solar cell and reflected from Backsheet. The intensity of the incident light directly into the solar cell is reduced through glass and EVA about 17.5[%] in theoretical way. It has an error of 2.26[%] compared with experimental result. The results for compare theoretical with experimental data is validated within the error of 6.3[%]. This paper would be a research material to predict output power when the PV module is installed outdoor or a building.
The transmission of solar light according to the distribution of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) was measured in the Pacific Arctic Ocean. The Research Vessel Araon visited the ice-covered East Siberian and Chukchi Seas in August 2016. In the Arctic, solar [ultraviolet-A (UV-A), ultraviolet-B (UV-B), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)] radiation reaching the surface of the ocean is primarily protected by the distribution of sea ice. The transmission of solar light in the ocean is controlled by sea ice and dissolved organic matter, such as CDOM. The concentration of CDOM is the major factor controlling the penetration depth of UV radiation into the ocean. The relative CDOM concentration of surface sea water was higher in the East Siberian Sea than in the Chukchi Sea. Due to the distribution of CDOM, the penetration depth of solar light in the East Siberian Sea (UV-B, $9{\pm}2m$; UV-A, $13{\pm}2m$; PAR, $36{\pm}4m$) was lower than in the Chukchi Sea (UV-B, $15{\pm}3m$; UV-A, $22{\pm}3m$; PAR, $49{\pm}3m$). Accelerated global warming and the rapid decrease of sea ice in the Arctic have resulted in marine organisms being exposed to increased harmful UV radiation. With changes in sea ice covered areas and concentrations of dissolved organic matter in the Arctic Ocean, marine ecosystems that consist of a variety of species from primary producers to high-trophic-level organisms will be directly or indirectly affected by solar UV radiation.
In this work, a numerical analysis of a CIGS ($CuIn_{1-x}Ga_xSe_2$) solar cell with a rectangular grating on the electrode is presented. The effects of the grating on the energy conversion efficiency are calculated using the RCWA (rigorous coupled wave analysis) method. In conventional CIGS solar cells, the thickness of the light absorption layer (CIGS) is $2\;{\mu}m$, at which the incident light is almost absorbed. By adopting a grating on the electrode and using a less than $1\;{\mu}m$ CIGS layer, we obtained a higher efficiency compared to the conventional solar cells.
This paper is a study on the design of the solar lamp bank which is a very important part of the solar simulator with the commercial metal halide lamps and infrared lamps. Lamp Bank is designed by the lamp bank design program based on point light source theory. The reliability of the program for lamp bank design is verified through irradiance variation experiments of a kind of lamp according to horizontal distance. Solar lamp bank facilitates heat distribution and satisfies the irradiance in the three wave length which test guidelines require. The shape of the ceiling board next to the lamp bank to promote the lamp cooling efficiency and to reduce temperature deviation and air velocity deviation in the chamber is so creative. The ceiling board of partial closed type is the best among several types.
